Hi Ved22

Your profile has some good spikes that can make it appealing to the adcom. Academically you have done well. Extracurriculars are great too. Work experience has its stand-out elements as well.

All in all, you have a good shot at ISB. You haven't mentioned your goals, so we recommend that you put a bit of research into planning both short term and long term vision. A great application with essays that highlight your strengths and clearly articulate why you would be an asset to the class of 2021 would take you across the finish line.

Feel free to reach out for a detailed discussion.

Hi shobhitkh

There are two aspects that you must focus upon. Firstly the GMAT - a GMAT of 650 will pull you down and you need to ensure that you hit at least a 700+. Secondly, since you would be competing with peers with a similar background, it would be important to clearly articulate why you wish to do an MBA and why is it linked to your journey and goals.

Extracurriculars are great and if you focus on nailing the points above, you have a good shot at ISB.

Feel free to reach out for a detailed discussion.

Hi Ved

We don't see years of work experience mentioned anywhere?

You have got a good GMAT score that is above ISB average, good academic credentials (your performance during engineering) and I believe you would be able to bring strong stories through your Reliance Jio experience. We also like the diversity of your extra-curriculars. Overall, it is a good profile. You would have to take care of two aspects:

1) As a software integration architect, how would you differentiate yourself from other IT/Soft Testing/Tech Architect candidates? You would also need to connect your experience with impact on company's revenues like you mentioned.

2) Assuming the work ex is below the average, you would really need to bring out elements of maturity, team work and collaboration and also components from your experience that explain how you would want to progress in your career in the short-term and long-term.

All the best.

Hi Shobhit,

I believe you would be able to bring out insightful essays story about your experience at Credit Suisse/ Ultra-tech. You should really spend a good amount of time on your essays. First describing how you would differentiate yourself from rest of the class and also add value to the cohort. You should also build on top of what you have achieved and plan you short term and long-term to show clarity of you decision to join ISB.

However, none of the above will make a lot of sense unless you work on your GMAT score. 650 in mocks is not really encouraging and you need to target 700+. Not saying that with a <700 , you cant make it. Well you may, but since you have some time, work on that score first. All the best.

Hello,

Greetings for the day!

I am a commerce student and graduated in BCOM 2015.
I have close to 4 years of experience majority in advertising/marketing, however, I do hold 1 year of experience in admin profile too.

I also am a painter and conduct painting session for kids. I got an opportunity to freelance in Social Media and handle a few known local brands.

I am 26 years old and plan to write GMAT on September 19.

I am targeting ISB and IIM B.

Can someone help me understand what min GMAT score I should be aiming at for these colleges with this profile?

Hi Ruddhi,

Thanks for the shout out.
Although ISB has a huge class size, competition is still never-ending and intense and in this scenario, every bit of "extra" helps. So aim for a 700+ GMAT score, preferably above a 720. The class size is much smaller at IIMB, but the big GMAT score will still help there.
Being from an advertising/ marketing background (I have the same background :)), you'd be expected to have good communication skills. I am going to recommend that you do really well in the quant section of GMAT to show your quantitative skills, which are a big evaluation criterion at business schools as they have quant-focussed subjects.
Also, if you are giving your GMAT is September, my guess is you will apply to both IIM B and ISB in the second round deadline. That should be okay.

Hi Ved22

- Your academics and GMAT score are quite strong. No problems there.
- Your leadership potential is quite strong as well, across multiple areas. This is important, as ISB is a school that definitely looks beyond your core professional profile to focus on areas such as blogging, Toastmasters, and social work.
- The part where you will need to work hard - your goals and your core professional profile, and presenting that to ISB. You come from a software engineering background, that is the #1 most represented background for ISB applicants. Yes, your work on the real-time inter-state system at Jio and on telecom technologies will help, but it will need to be worked upon. This is your main challenge in this application, and you can definitely meet it.
- Also go through this series of articles as they will help you.

Hope this helps. Feel free to come back with more queries as needed.

Hi theyesguy

Acads and work-ex are all good here. A 710-720 can help you make it, with a good app. Go for it.

Hello Everyone,
I plan to apply for ISB in 2nd Round.
GMAT score - 620 ( planned retake in Sept hence second round)

Undergrad - 62.14 percent , B.E ( Computer Science) , Pune University.

Work experience - 3 and a half years as a software developer. Currently working at Cognizant as a Programmer analyst. Previously worked with Bentley Systems and Caterpillar inc.

Started my career in Caterpillar inc as an associate It analyst. Quickly realized I was in the wrong place. Non tech job, work on the shop floor etc. Quit after 6 months and secured an internship at Bentley Systems. Converted internship into a full time opportunity. Developed crucial features for the product I was working on. Worked with colleagues of different nationalities namely Americans ,English, Polish , Chinese , Canadians etc. I was the go to man for team presentations, have given presentations in front of senior vps. Since there was no client interaction, I moved to Cognizant. Spent 3 months at client location (domestic). Currently working offshore delivering critical systems

Cocurricular - I have authored a research paper which was presented in an IEEE conference and published by IEEE.

Extracurricular - I was a frequent participant in speech contests , debates and elocutions . Won my first debate in class 4 and was amongst the top 3 every year. Participated in a state level Hindi elocution competition. I used to play tabla and performed regularly at the school annual day. The speaking continued in my college days and I won modern youth parliament event in college.
Was the campaigning head for a national tech fest. Also, I was the secretary of the student union of my department.
Post college joined toastmasters, and I have been a club secretary, VP membership and president. Currently I serve as an area director, responsible for 5 clubs (150 people approx)
Have won many awards while serving these roles. Have organised events in school, college, toastmasters and my work places.
I was a part of csr committee of Bentley Systems, helped organise donation drives for students and hosted cultural events.
Currently part of a core team working on creating an organisation focused on education for poor.

Hi GovindaLalwani

- The rest of your profile is actually quite nice (though you are an IT applicant), but your GMAT score and acads pull you down. You still have ~2 months to prepare for the GMAT (on the outer side) to meet R1 deadlines. Try for that; else R2.
- Can you shed a bit more light on your work responsibilities/domain at Cognizant etc?
- Also go through this series of articles as they will help you.
