Hi Lacroix5,

Overall I think your profile is pretty competitive for their deferred program. Excellent GPA from a great business program at Ross. Work experience and leadership sound very competitive too.

Only challenge is your GMAT, which is solid, but below average for Booth's class. I don't think that alone is a reason not to apply, just warning you that it could be an issue and if you end up waiting and applying later, I would plan to retake it.

Check out some of the resources via Booth's Rustandy Center, as I believe they just introduced an Impact Investing course. My sense is that it's a popular choice of post-MBA career, but there still aren't a ton of jobs in it, so make sure you're showing why that's a good fit for you, and how your prior experience or even personal interests translates to impact investing.

Good luck!
Kate

Re: Booth Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
26, male, Indian Sikh.
Business economics graduate from Delhi University (first division). I've derived that my GPA is 3.7 (kindly correct if wrong)
GMAT: 740 (Q51, V39, IR8, AWA6)
Work experience:
Full time 2.5 years, freelance 1.5 years.

I freelanced with a production studio as a cinematographer and a video editor for 6 months. They hired me full-time and promoted me to the post of senior producer because I was good at dealing with clients. This lasted for 6 months too.
Then I left for Mumbai to assist in ads and films to learn more. I was freelancing as well. I was the assistant cinematographer in Kapil Sharma's "Firangi". Was part of many short films as well.

Then I joined my family business of medicine exports. It involved handling purchase and negotiating rates and payment terms. Soon I started travelling to Imphal to manage a pharmacy as it's conflict struck area and hiring someone local was tough.
Additionally, I became a mutual fund distributor in Jan last year. I have a sizeable AUM under me. I am also a stock trader. I still freelance as a cinematographer.

In college I used to make short films on social causes. I'd write, shoot, direct and edit myself. The topics ranged from communal differences, eve teasing to organ donation. I screened the organ donation movie in my college and about 50 viewers pledged their organs after the screening.
I also won numerous awards in -
Street theatre
Best photographer
Best cinematography
Best short film (director)

I wish to get into financial consulting post MBA.

What is the deal breaker here? I've been told that my work ex won't count since I've mostly worked for myself or my family (albeit full time).

Re: Booth Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Could you kindly review my profile for the 2019-2020 admission cycle?
I apologize for the very lengthy post.

My profile/stats:

* 28 this year, Southeast Asian (Chinese) based in Singapore
* GMAT: 710 (Q49, V36, IR7); first "blind" attempt; will be looking aiming for 750-770.
* GPA: 3.1/4.0; one of the top colleges/target schools in Singapore, this is my primary concern
* No. of WE: 3 years as of now (started upon graduation in May 2016).
>> Spent 1 year in the wealth management division (front office sales) of a tier1 US bank
>> Was a top performer and earmarked for promotion at the end of the year
>> However, I have always wanted to work in financial markets. Hence, I left for a tier2 investment bank after 1 year of cold calling
>> Joined on contract. Performance was good and they created a headcount for me after 1 year.
>> Got promoted to senior analyst in my 2nd year. Given additional responsibilities to cover 2 sets of clients (essentially 2 men's job)

* Extracurricular activities during college:
>> Elected into student office during college. Initiated and led various signature events
>> Part of a major band in school. Invited for various paid gigs and even overseas performances
>> Took part in various case competitions and overseas study trips

* Extracurricular activities post-college:
>> Part of the same alumni band
>> Part of an alumni mentoring circle
>> Volunteers in a church - mentoring younger boys
>> Freelance as a wedding pianist

Post MBA goals:
* Short/medium term - consulting with MBB with a focus on public sector/government or financial services (am not fully certain on the focus to be very honest) in the US. I plan to stay in the US for a few years. Alternatively, I'd be happy to explore options in general management/strategy. I believe all my short term goals are realistic with a T15 MBA.
* Long term - I am not looking to start any company or join a VC/HF/PE. I personally believe I am better suited to working in a large corporate. Hence, I am looking for longevity within the mgmt consulting firm or move into a strategy/COO role in the public sector/financial services.

I would like to have an immersive experience at school. Smaller size would be a plus, not a must. Would like a place with a heavy focus on teamwork and collaboration. Strength in general management will be a plus.

Hi ratesman,

Thank you for your post and for sharing your profile. A few notes on the various components of your profile:

Academic: I recommend you include a statement about your undergraduate performance in your application. A persuasive explanation, coupled with a 750+ GMAT score would help alleviate adcom's concerns, provided the rest of your profile and application material reflects a strong candidate.

Professional: I like that you have been promoted and have taken a more significant leadership role within your organization. In this part of your profile, I recommend you consider how your professional experiences have informed your short and long-term goals. How do you intend to use your experiences to propel your career in management consulting? And how will the MBA fill any gaps and strengthen your candidacy?

Community Engagement: Your ECs are strong. Be sure to reflect on how these experiences help you bring a diversity of perspective to your community.

With an increased GMAT and well-formulated strong application, you have a chance at a top 15.

I am happy to discuss your profile further. If interested, please reach out.

Good luck!

Hi Ahmed,

Your work profile is great. You are in a leadership position and directly handling budgets which is always a plus point. A few points to note:
1. Your GMAT score is quite average. Any chance of a retake?
2. You seem to be working on critical project with the wireless business. I believe you should milk this well for the application. You may have a story to tell about working on a project of national importance and how it connects with your career vision - just laying out some thoughts here
3. Given that you have worked in the same company for 8+ years, you must show career progression.
4. Also, being an MBA post 30, there should be a solid need for doing an MBA now.
5. The extra curricular activities if substantial will hold you in good stead

Hey folks,

After being very clear on applying to INSEAD & LBS in Round 1, I recently happened to read about Chicago Booth in a bit more detail and am loving the flexible nature of the school. I was pretty much decided on applying to only INSEAD & LBS because they are the best in Europe and I am not convinced if I am cut out for the US corporate culture or general lifestyle. I resonate more with Europe. However, keeping aside this factor, please help me decide if I should apply to Booth in Round 1. Adding a school to the list is a big task as you can imagine not only because of the essays but also for a whole lot of research that goes into the process. Hence, your views will be appreciated.

Additional information about me:

GMAT: 710 (working on another attempt)
Nationality: Indian Female
UG: Studied Economics at the top school in India for the subject
Current experience: Investment banking and entrepreneurship
Future aspiration: Management consulting in the short term and then venture back to entrepreneurship once the loans are paid off
Ideals of business school I am interested in: Flexibility, experiential opportunities (internships, simulations, competitions etc), entrepreneurship should be an integral part of the curriculum & experience, alumni support (collaboration > competition), ease of finding a job & KEEPING IT (wrt visa hassles), long term brand value

I would really appreciate any opinions I can get! Thanks

Hi,

Looking for a profile evaluation here for my chances.

Bio: White Male from US | 25 yrs old | Will have ~4 years of work ex at matriculation

Education: 3.67 GPA from Georgetown, Major (honors) in Economics, Minors in Physics and Math

GMAT: 760 - 49Q 47V 6AWA 8IR

Work Ex: Management Consulting at Accenture, promoted twice with primary work with Investment Bank clients. Have traveled to London as part of this work, also have experience as an intern during undergrad time working in Morocco

ECs: Weaker spot, Member of a formal community of Alumni who provide guidance to current Georgetown students. At work I am part of our campus recruiting team for Georgetown (I like to give back to undergrad). Also a member of a 3 person team at work who led an initiative in our Financial Services Practice to increase recognition of colleagues through a new award we introduced. I have competed in several triathlons as well, nothing special there but a bit unique. Also founded a club during undergrad years which focused on the intersection of business, analytics, and sports, so some time ago but maybe worth mentioning for leadership and uniqueness.

Post MBA goals:

Pivot from management consulting to Tech. Currently work tangentially with Tech but want to move full time there, tired of jumping around project to project and starting over every few months. Want the MBA experience as well because a dream job (10+ years out) for me is Nuclear Fusion, which I studied and wrote a paper about in college. FOr that you need tech, energy, and entrepreneurship and an MBA is a great place to find a combination of all 3.

Hi wraider84,

Thank you for your post and for sharing your profile. Generally speaking, I like your profile and think you would thrive at Booth. They are very analytic in their teaching and approach and think you would fit in.

You have strong academics and excellent GMAT. Your community engagement is interesting as well, particularly your recognition initiative (I would like to discuss this further). As to work, I like that you've been promoted twice, but would like to learn more about the scope of your responsibilities. A few other schools you should look at include, MIT, Ross, and Berkely Haas, particularly as they relate to your long-term goals.

I am happy to speak with you further about your MBA applications and see how we can be of service. If interested, please reach out.

Good luck!

Susan

• Goal Post- MBA: Come back to Deloitte and follow the Partner track at the firm to lead the Life Sciences Practice. Booth's GPHAP track in their MBA program would be ideal to learn more about supply chain interdependencies with other business functions and learn more about healthcare policy impact on life sciences business processes. Also I plan to continue doing Net Impact work at Booth as well given my experience in Net impact during undergrad- my goal is explore the intersection of healthcare and nonprofits with fellow students.

Sponsorship Process: Went through the process successfully but sponsorship was later revoked after my H-1B was denied. I have an informal offer to return to Deloitte post-MBA due to my high performance. The H-1B denial also meant that I had to leave Deloitte in May this year temporarily for 8 months. Currently, I am working at Haiti Now and getting my PMP certification.

agupta3091 you have strong GRE score and workex at Deloitte. Deloitte has a strong brand recognition with your Target schools as it one of the biggest employers in these schools. Being at the top of analyst class and getting promoted make you stand out. Make sure you highlight how your personal tragedy has shaped your long term goals in main essay. You can also address how you handled family tragedy in your optional essays. In my view, rather than speaking of H1B denial, you should just say that you want to keep your post-MBA Life Sciences consulting options open for other top consulting firms like MBB and hence not option for sponsorship. However, you have strong relationship at Deloitte with informal offer to return post-MBA. Along with Booth, Sloan, Duke and HaaS, you should also explore Wharton, Kellogg and Tuck who have srong Healthcare programs. All the best :)
