Hi Jagdishkumar,

Your GMAT Score is 'valid' for 5 years, so the length of time between when you take the GMAT and when you apply to Business School will likely NOT be a factor in how that Score is interpreted. If you Score a 700, then that shows Business Schools that you are a really strong critical thinker overall (and while GMAT Test Taking skills can fade over time, those broader critical thinking skills generally do not) - so a high GMAT Score that is several years 'old' is still a valid indicator of how well you will probably handle the MBA Program(s) that you choose to apply to.

From your post, it's not clear whether you are just beginning your studies or you have put in some significant study time already. Either way, taking the GMAT far in advance of when you'll "need" your Score is a smart choice.

If you're just beginning, then it would be a good idea to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can access 2 for free from www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). If you want to do a bit of practice first, so that you can familiarize yourself with the general content and question types first, then that's fine - but you shouldn't wait too long to take that initial CAT. A FULL CAT takes about 3.5 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have those scores, you should report back here and we can come up with a study plan.

I'd like to know a bit more about your timeline and goals:
1) What is your goal score?
2) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School?

Hello MR RICH!
Thank you for your reply!!
I have been preparing for the Gmat for 3 months now..
I had given 2 full length practice tests in the begining and scored
Q 48,V 28 total-620
Q 51,V 26 total-630
Currently I have set my goal to breach the 700 mark but eventually I would like to get anything between 750.
Currently I am in 3rd year of my 4 year bachelor's degree.
I am planning to take my Gmat around a year's time.
I am planning to apply for Bschools after 2 years of work experience,so around 4 years time.

Hi Jagdishkumar,

Studying for the GMAT now - far in advance of when you'll "need" your Score - is a smart choice.

You mentioned that you had taken those 2 practice CATs in the 'beginning' of your studies. Since you have been studying for 3 months, have you taken any CATs recently (in the last couple of weeks)? If you have, then how did you score? If you have not, then I suggest that you take a new CAT sometime soon (perhaps this weekend). Once you have that Score, you should post back here and we can discuss the results.

Depending on your current 'ability level' - and how well you adjust your studies - you could potentially take the GMAT in 2-3 months and hit your Goal Score.

Hi Jagdishkumar,

This recent CAT Score is a nice improvement over your 2 prior Scores - and since you appear to be improving, you might be able to hit your Goal Score by continuing to study in the same ways that you have been. However, it's also possible that your current approach to the Verbal section would need some adjustments before you could consistently score V40+. Right now, there's not enough data to say for sure either way.

1) How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far?

This statement isn't factual. If your main focus is to correctly answer the first ten questions, then you are likely to hamper your final scores.

Your total performance will be dependent on the entire set of questions. The algorithm will continue to estimate your scores right up to the end.
