FROM Kelley MBA Blog: IU, Kelley School and Whirlpool mark a decade of Habitat for Humanity Homes campus builds |
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the 10th time, hundreds of students, faculty and staff from Indiana University and its Kelley School of Business will team up with Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County to build a new home on campus for a local family, with support from Whirlpool Corporation. Since 2010, nine other families have benefited from the 10-day blitz builds happening annually across 17th Street from the IU Athletics complex. Bob and Alice Wilmoth of Bloomington (pictured below) soon will join them, receiving the keys to their new home on the field at Memorial Stadium before IU’s homecoming football game against Rutgers University. A year ago, the Wilmoths watched as last year’s build for Stephanie Rose and her two children unfolded, as they made their way to and from church services at St. Paul’s Catholic Center. While they were impressed with the house being built, they today appreciate even further the meaning behind the effort. “These students, these volunteers are the most important people in our lives right now and they don’t even realize it yet,” Bob said. “It is amazing that in their short time here as students, they’re leaving a legacy in Bloomington that will last forever.” Construction began today (Oct. 1) down the street from the stadium at the southeast intersection of 17th Street and Fee Lane. The public is welcome to attend the house dedication at the building site at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 12. The following morning, weather permitting, the house will be moved to its permanent location. Many of the students participating are involved with the Kelley Institute for Social Impact, which serves as a hub within the school for socially-conscious undergraduate students who want to make a different in local and global communities through education, service, career development and leadership opportunities. The Whirlpool Corporation has sponsored every campus build since the program’s inception in 2009, and this year marks 20 years of collaboration with Habitat for Humanity. Since 1999, the company has supported Habitat programs across 45 countries with a commitment of more than $107 million and donated a range and refrigerator to every new Habitat home across the U.S. and Canada. “Bloomington holds a special place in our hearts and it’s an event we look forward to every year,” said Jim Peters, chief financial officer for Whirlpool, who earned an MBA at Kelley in 1998. “We’re excited to be working alongside Indiana University students, faculty and staff to mark the 10th anniversary of this build and give the gift of making memories through family cooking and dinner conversations in their new Habitat home.” Peters will participate in the dedication, along with leadership from Habitat for Humanity and several homeowners from the past decade of campus builds. The company also has invited Chef Roshara Sanders — better known as “Chef Ro” – to participate. An Army veteran, she grew up in a Habitat house and went on to win the popular Food Network program “Chopped.” “Whirlpool is an excellent example of a company that strives to make a difference in communities around the globe through social and environmental responsibility,” said Idalene “Idie” Kesner, dean of the IU Kelley School of Business and the Frank P. Popoff Chair of Strategic Management. “For a decade, we’ve been extremely fortunate to provide students, faculty and staff with an opportunity to see Whirlpool’s model at work, while reinforcing Kelley’s commitment to service and thus helping 10 families attain the dream of home ownership.” The Wilmoths have been living in a temporary apartment while flood repairs are being made to address water damage and mold in their current rental home. After moving around often during their 14 years of marriage, they’re both eager to own their own home and settle somewhere permanent and safe for granddaughter Remy to come and visit. “Ten years is a milestone we’re very proud of and we are incredibly grateful to Whirlpool, IU and the Kelley School of Business for their continued contributions and commitments to this program, which has helped so many families realize the benefits and stability provided through home ownership,” said Wendi Goodlett, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County. “Gifts of financial support and time from donors like Whirlpool have a lasting impact for future families as well,” Goodlett added. “As Alice and Bob pay their mortgage and build home equity, their mortgage payments will help fund the materials to serve future Habitat families.” To qualify for a Habitat home, each family must have the ability to pay a zero-interest mortgage and invest at least 250 hours of “sweat equity” or volunteer hours. The Wilmoths performed much of their sweat equity volunteering at the Habitat ReStore. Bob, who was a carpenter becoming disabled, also put his woodworking skills to good use by re-purposing pine and cedar donated to the store to build bird and bat houses that became a popular item with customers. “It is pretty cool that by building homes for bats and birds, I can in-turn provide a way to build our own house,” he said. Those interested in participating in the build can sign up through an online calendar or contact the Kelley School’s Institute for Social Impact at 812-856-7852 or KISI@indiana.edu. |
FROM Kelley MBA Blog: Venture co-founded by Kelley alumnus aiming for top honors at TechCrunch’s Startup Battlefield competition |
SAN FRANCISCO – Civic Champs, a startup based in Indiana University Kelley School of Business’ Hoosier Hatchery incubator, is one of 18 companies — chosen from more than 700 firms worldwide – to compete in Startup Battlefield at TechCrunch Disrupt San Francisco 2019. The company, co-founded by Ryan Underdahl, Civic Champs chief operating officer and a 2019 graduate of Kelley’s Full-Time MBA program (second from the left in image above), will compete on tech’s biggest stage for the Disrupt Cup and $100,000 in equity-free prize money. At the heart of the company is a mobile application that helps nonprofits “seamlessly” digitally track volunteer hours and other information they need to apply for grant funding. Bloomington nonprofits Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County and My Sister’s Closet were involved in early efforts to test app’s effectiveness. The Startup Battlefield competition plays out over three days. Civic Champs will make its pitch to judges on Thursday, Oct. 3 at around 1:40 pm local time (4:40 EDT), which can be viewed live online. The conference surrounding the competition is considered the original tech startup conference. The competition showcases promising early-stage and fundamentally disruptive startups. Previous winners have included familiar apps such as Vurb and Dropbox, social media network Yammer and the personal financial management service Mint. Civic Champs and the other teams have trained over the last two months with Startup Battlefield and TechCrunch editorial teams to strengthen their business case, enhance their product framing and create a strong stage pitch. Past experience at Kelley has prepared Underdahl and his team as well. The company was one of 40 chosen from 150 entries for this spring’s Clapp IDEA Competition at the Johnson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, ultimately winning the $20,000 prize. Each team has six minutes to make their pitch before judges and a live audience and then answer judges’ questions on Oct. 2-3. A select group are chosen to compete for the grand prize in the final round on Oct. 4, with a new set of judges. Startup Battlefield began today with remarks from moderator and TechCrunch senior writer Anthony Ha. |

FROM Kelley MBA Blog: Kelley School professor appointed as an advisor to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau |
WASHINGTON — Michael R. Baye, the Bert Elwert Professor of Business Economics at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business, has been appointed to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Academic Research Council, which advises bureau leadership on a broad range of consumer financial issues and emerging market trends. Baye, who joined the Kelley School faculty in 1997, previously served in Washington, D.C. as director of the Bureau of Economics at the U.S. Federal Trade Commission in 2007-08. In his new appointment, Baye will serve for the next two years in an advisory capacity as a member of the CFPB’s Academic Research Council. It advises the bureau on its strategic research planning process and research agenda. It also provides feedback on research methodologies, data collection strategies, and methods of analysis, including methodologies and strategies for quantifying the costs and benefits of regulatory actions. “When I returned from the FTC, my students really enjoyed learning first-hand about current policy issues. I was also able to share useful information with colleagues,” Baye said. “The value of that knowledge has depreciated over the past decade, and it will be good to have fresh insights to share. “It is certainly an honor to serve our country,” he added. “America has given me so many opportunities, and I welcome the opportunity to give something back. “ The Consumer Finance Protection Bureau was created in 2010, when President Barack Obama signed the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. While Baye’s responsibilities in antitrust and consumer protection at the Federal Trade Commission precluded him from specializing in applications to the financial sector, much of his time was devoted to economic analyses of consumer protection matters in financial markets — including payday loans, fair lending and studies on the efficacy of mortgage disclosures. Today, the CFPB is now responsible for protecting consumers in these markets. In his new advisory role, Baye will help the ensure that CFPB Director Kathleen Kraninger has all of the knowledge, tools and capabilities necessary to protect consumers in financial markets. He and his colleagues on the Academic Research Council will not have any formal decision-making roles. This spring, Kraninger announced a series of enhancements to the bureau’s advisory committee charters, including elevating the Academic Research Council to a director-level advisory committee and increasing the frequency of its meetings, which Baye may attend in person or via videoconferencing. “Great thing about working today is that, with video calls, collaboration can be done without travel,” Baye said. Baye said his academic and practical experience in economics and econometrics should help the bureau maintain and develop the human resources, knowledge and scientific tools needed to conduct data-driven, evidence-based policy analysis to ensure that well-intentioned policies designed to protect consumers do not have adverse, unintended consequences. “I prefer to solve real-world rather than hypothetical problems, and these experiences are all about the real world. Staff at the FTC and CFPB are highly knowledgeable about real-world economic institutions, and it is great to have an opportunity to learn from smart people who deal with real-world problems on a daily basis,” Baye said. “In the case of ARC, I will be working with other professors with differing areas of expertise, and it will be great to learn from them as well.” Baye was one of seven scholars from across the country appointed to the Academic Research Council. Others include Karen Dynan, former assistant secretary for economic policy and chief economist at the U.S. Department of the Treasury from 2014 to 2017 and now a Harvard professor; and John Lynch Jr., senior associate dean for faculty and research at the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado. “I owe a great debt to the research environment at the Kelley School,” Baye said. “I have benefited from more than 20 years of conversations with and learning from IU colleagues. This makes it difficult for me to know whether any advice I might offer the CFPB comes from me or one of my colleagues.” His research focuses on advertising and pricing strategies and their impact on consumer welfare and firm profits in online and traditional markets. His research on the economics of information, advertising, pricing, competition, game theory and other areas related to consumer protection has been published in journals such as American Economic Review, the Journal of Political Economy, Econometrica and Management Science. He has co-authored a variety of textbooks, including “Managerial Economics & Business Strategy (now in its ninth edition with McGraw-Hill)” and “Money, Banking & Financial Markets: An Economic Approach.” A Fulbright Research Scholar at Erasmus University Rotterdam, Baye has held visiting appointments at Cambridge University and the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, Erasmus University and Tilburg University in Europe, the New Economic School in Russia and Chapman University, a private school in California. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from Texas A&M University and a PhD in economics from Purdue University. |
FROM Kelley MBA Blog: Kelley Direct moves up to second in Poets & Quants’ rankings of online MBA programs |
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Kelley Direct Online MBA program at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business has moved up to second in new 2020 rankings from Poets & Quants, a leading news site about business education. Poets & Quants’ ranking of 35 online MBA programs is based on three equally weighted factors: the quality of incoming students, an assessment of the MBA experience by graduates and career outcomes of alumni. The news outlet surveyed nearly 1,600 graduates overall. “We’re always pleased when the hard work of our faculty and staff is recognized by others,” said Idalene “Idie” Kesner, dean of the Kelley School and the Frank P. Popoff Chair of Strategic Management. “We often hear from our students how much they appreciate the connections they are able to build with our faculty and staff both inside and outside the classroom, especially through things such as career coaching and experiential learning. Our students know that Kelley can help them achieve their professional and personal goals.” Kelley Direct is the original online MBA program from a top-tier business school. It consistently has been ranked at or near the top in program rankings, and it remains innovative in design and how it serves the needs of students. “We prefer to think of the Kelley Direct Online MBA as a leading master’s in business administration program that just happens to be delivered online,” said Ramesh Venkataraman, associate dean for information and instructional technologies and chair of Kelley Direct MBA & MS Programs. “Our strengths stem from key commitments we have made to our students,” he said. “We know that the idea of online learning can be intimidating for some learners, so we work hard to provide meaningful, lasting connections between individual students and their peers, our faculty, and dedicated staff.” This year, Kelley Direct launched a revised curriculum, featuring an innovative set of integrated core modules. Each integrated core module allows students to gain deep knowledge in three subject areas while at the same time allowing them to see connections across the subject areas. The program also allows student to personalize their MBA degree, with 50 percent of their courses being electives, including global and domestic hands-on immersion courses. Its curriculum structure and teaching methods allow students to begin applying new knowledge and business capabilities right away in their organizations. “We are committed to helping students advance in their careers,” Venkataraman said. “We hear from students frequently that they can apply on Tuesday at work what they learned on Monday night in a live class session.” As the number of online MBA programs continues to grow, the market is becoming increasingly competitive, said Nathan Allen, Poets&Quants’ special projects editor. “This third annual ranking is a tighter, more competitive grouping than we have seen,” Allen said. “The result is a dynamically changing landscape of the top programs as we see innovation, pricing, and customization all factor in to the quality of a program.” Earlier this year, Kelley Direct’s online MBA and MS programs both were ranked No. 1 by U.S. News & World Report and the Financial Times ranked the MBA program second in the nation. Poets & Quants, one of five education websites operated by C-Change Media, was founded and is led by John A. Byrne, former executive editor of Businessweek and former editor-in-chief of Fast Company. He created the first regularly published rankings of business schools. |

FROM Kelley MBA Blog: Kelley School hosts the nation’s premier collegiate competition in professional selling |
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Students from 20 colleges and universities across the country will compete this week in the 13th annual National Team Selling Competition, hosted by the Indiana University Kelley School of Business. The two-day premier event for students studying professional sales takes place Oct. 23-25 and is organized by Kelley’s Center for Global Sales Leadership. Competing teams have the opportunity to bring their classroom knowledge and experience and apply those skills in a selling situation that is realistic and relevant in today’s market. The competition also provides exceptional networking opportunities with corporate partners, students, and faculty. About 80 participants will come from coast to coast and include students from Kelley Big Ten peers Penn State and Michigan State universities, as well as Baylor University, Villanova University and the universities of Washington and Connecticut. Several in-state institutions are represented, including Indiana State University, Marian University and Manchester University. “We’re proud to provide this valuable experience and to be the only top 10 undergraduate business school that offers a professional sales major,” said Idalene “Idie” Kesner, dean of the Kelley School and the Frank P. Popoff Chair in Strategic Management. Students are competing for $6,000 in prize money. Through the generous support of sponsoring companies Altria Distribution Co. and 3M, meals and lodging are provided throughout the event. Two weeks before the competition, teams were given a 15-page document that presented a realistic yet fictional business case. Teams will be judged on their performance during two rounds of role-playing exercises with judges from the sponsoring companies. More than 60 Kelley students competed in an earlier, one-on-one competition in order to be selected to participate in the National Team Selling Competition. The competition’s team-based approach and its complexity differentiate it from other sales contests around the country, Michael Ames, a Kelley alumnus and Altria vice president for talent acquisition and development, said in 2017. “The fact that this competition is a team-selling competition reflects the evolving nature of sales, especially at higher levels,” Ames said. “It’s not as transaction oriented. It’s about managing longer relationships, bigger types of sales with more individuals on your team.” Feedback is given to students during the competition. All faculty coaches and participants receive a video of their school’s performance as well as a video of the case debrief, so they can continue to learn from the National Team Selling Competition experience. Presentations by the last three winning teams are available online on the event’s page. Hosting the team sales competition demonstrates how much Kelley has been an early leader in sales education. Kelley is the only top 10 undergraduate program to offer a professional sales major. Fewer than 25 business schools nationwide offer such a degree. “The demand for students who can represent companies in customer-facing roles is very large,” said Charles B. Ragland, executive director of the Center for Global Sales Leadership and a clinical associate professor of marketing. “Then they move up, out of those roles and into sales and marketing management jobs, depending on the company.” About 150 Kelley students graduate annually with a major in professional sales, and most double-major in another business discipline. All of them leave with a job at places such as consumer products giants Procter & Gamble, Whirlpool, Kraft, Altria and 3M. In addition to organizing the competition, the Center for Global Sales Leadership works closely with corporate partners to create programs and events that get students excited about careers in professional selling and sales management. Each semester, the center provides multiple opportunities to partner with different student groups at Kelley, including the Global Sales Workshop, Sales Club and professional sales majors. |
FROM Kelley MBA Blog: Kelley certificate defines, amplifies women’s management strengths |
A new, hands-on leadership development program offered by the Kelley School of Business is designed to help women—and their organizations—reach their potential by building on female managers’ strengths rather than expecting them to work like men. The Women in Leadership business certificate program, Dec. 2 – 6, 2019, brings women together with experts in leadership, negotiation, interpersonal and management communications, and coaching. They will participate in discussion, exercises, role-playing, assessment and introspection, and more on the IU Bloomington campus. Ideal participants are women who are poised for upper management roles, who pitch and lead projects, and who need to have productive meetings that incorporate different styles of thinking. “Our program can help organizations that say, ‘We need new perspectives; we need new ways of thinking about things; we need creativity; we need more effective decision making,’” said Carolyn Goerner, lead instructor of the program and an expert in human resource management, mentoring, and leadership. Lead Instructor Carolyn Goerner Goerner, a clinical professor of management at Kelley, said most work cultures still prioritize masculine ways of thinking. This doesn’t mean that women need to model their male colleagues to get ahead, though. In fact, their employers may be better off if they do not—research has found that organizations with gender diversity in their leadership can expect to see stronger financial performances than those that do not. “The purpose of the course is to recognize these differences so that women understand their strengths and can communicate their value in ways that can be heard,” Goerner said. “We’re not asking the women to develop new skillsets. We’re showing them what they already have and how to navigate the culture.” Many professional women, Goerner said, have phenomenal strengths that sometimes include:
The December program will be the first time Kelley has offered this course as a five-day, in-residence certificate program. Previously, it was offered as a two-day program, minus the exercises, role-playing, coaching, and other activities designed to enable the women to apply what they’re learning. Goerner expects the certificate program to continue the community building component of the shorter program, where participants often found allies in their classmates. “From a networking perspective, the friendships and allies created during these programs are invaluable,” she said. To learn more or register for the program, visit the Women in Leadership In-Residence Business Certificate online. |

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For 13 years, the Indiana University Kelley School of Business has extended its customary Hoosier hospitality to dozens of business students from around the country by hosting the National Team Selling Competition. Last year was the first time that a Kelley team had placed in the top three. Students from other business schools always came away from the two-day competition celebrating a victory and posing for pictures of the winning team. That is, until this year. Five Kelley students — Emily Albert, Molly Delaney, Lucas Maggos, Georgia Prock and Josiah Zintsmaster coached by lecturer Dennis Spahr and fellow student Adam Scheck — emerged from among 20 teams from across the country to win the 2019 competition on Oct. 25. “Each of the schools had a competitive team,” Spahr said. “Past winners — Michigan State and the University of Richmond — were there. Baylor and San Diego did extremely well in their respective brackets and had strong performances.” Some of the other participating schools offer semester-long courses that focus on sales competitions. Their students practice for months on cases like those used at the National Team Selling Competition. “I still can’t believe we won,” said Prock, a junior majoring in finance from Bolingbrook, Illinois. “When we were sitting up there, waiting to hear the top three, we definitely did not expect to come out as No. 1. I think this could be because we are very critical of what we expect from ourselves, something that Kelley taught us. We push ourselves to constantly be our best, and we have learned that from being surrounded by Kelley students who do the same.” “At first, I could not believe that we won the competition because of the level of talent that we competed against,” added Maggos, a junior majoring in finance from Mount Prospect, Illinois. “However, I was overwhelmed with joy and proud that our team’s hard work earned us first place … I felt that we deserved to win as I was listening to the case debrief and realized that our team covered every point that the judges were looking for.” Spahr, a lecturer in marketing and the team’s faculty coach (pictured right), said this year’s case was more challenging than in the past. The case involved selling technology rather than a consumer-packaged goods product. “Uncovering all the relevant data and calculating the return on investment was fairly complex,” he said. “Even though this was a sales competition and not a financial competition, the team needed to work hard to confirm the numbers were correct — and they were confirmed to be correct by the judges.” Scheck, a senior majoring in marketing and professional sales from Indianapolis, said his experience coaching with Spahr was invaluable. “As someone who would like to get into a management role one day, this provided a great experience at understanding the dynamics of a team from the other side and the importance of understanding what works well and what doesn’t in a group environment,” he said. Albert served as the team’s alternate – only because she had a job interview on the day of the competition. “She was an integral part of the team and worked with us in all the preparation sessions,” Spahr said. “I think it’s a testament to the talent on the team when the alternate member is being heavily recruited and has multiple job offers to consider.” Students also credited the role that the Kelley School and its Global Sales Workshop has played in their professional development. “They teach us the soft skills of talking to potential buyers and clients, presentation skills that are unmatched,” Prock said. “Even outside the ‘role play,’ Kelley taught us how to network and speak to potential recruiters, which is so important to our futures. “Our coaches … pushed us to be our best,” she added. “They spent hours on end helping us think through things logically, but also letting us make mistakes that we could learn from. They gave us thoughtful feedback and constructive criticism which at the end of the day, was what helped us win.” In addition to a national title, students competed for $6,000 in prize money – including $3,000 to the winning team. Altria Distribution Co. and 3M were title sponsors, helping to provide meals and lodging for all nearly 80 students who competed. About 150 Kelley students graduate annually with a major in professional sales, and most double-major in another business discipline. All of them leave with a job at places such as consumer products giants Procter & Gamble, Whirlpool, Kraft, Altria and 3M. “The fact that this is a team selling competition is very relevant to the ‘real world,’ Spahr said. “In the short term, the students are building their already strong collaboration skills and their confidence to compete in something such as this. It can be very nerve wracking going into a case competition with multiple people sitting in the back of the room literally judging you. “In the long-term, this experience builds each students’ skills and will translate into job offers with great corporate partners such as Altria and 3M,” he added. “Participating in this competition is arguably harder than a “real world” sales meeting because you’re being judged and videotaped.” Winning the competition certainly will further bolster career prospects for members of the Kelley team, including Zintsmaster, a sophomore from Roann, Indiana, studying entrepreneurship and corporate innovation, marketing and professional sales. “After Kelley, I want to jump straight into professional sales, work, and travel for a few years,” he said. “Not only do I feel immense pride and honor from being on a team that represents IU, but this sales competition made me fall in love with sales even more.” |

FROM Kelley MBA Blog: IU Kelley School of Business may be marking its centennial, but its origins go back 200 years |
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – During the same year that Indiana University is marking its bicentennial, the IU Kelley School of Business is celebrating 100 years of preparing students to lead organizations, start companies, develop new products and services, and shape business knowledge and policy. The IU Board of Trustees established a School of Commerce and Finance in 1920, but the story of business education at the university goes back to its origins 200 years ago. On January 20, 1829, the Indiana General Assembly established Indiana State Seminary in Bloomington, which became a college in 1828 and a university in 1838. In the Indiana Legislature’s act establishing Indiana State Seminary, the first section called for the education of youth in the “useful arts,” among other things. The focus, though, was classic liberal arts education. Within that initial curriculum — which included Latin, Greek, English, algebra, astronomy, mathematics, physical geography, philosophy and religion – was political economy, the forerunner of modern economics. Political economy was included in the university’s initial academic bulletin of 1830-31 as a senior-level course. Andrew Wylie, IU’s first president from 1829 to 1851, also held the academic title of professor of mental and moral philosophy, political economy and police literature. The university’s fifth and sixth presidents – Cyrus Nutt and Lemuel Moss – also held the same title and taught courses in the subject. The term “economics” — either as a department name or in a faculty title — was not used until the mid-1880s, when Arthur B. Woodford held the faculty title of assistant and associate professor in economics and sociology. A Department of Economics and Social Science continued to grow in scope between 1887 and 1900. It had become increasingly clear to IU presidents Joseph Swain (1893 to 1902) and William Lowe Bryan (1902–1937) that the university needed to expand and offer more professional areas of study. Up to that point, the only professional focus was the law. Both the nation and the state were rapidly industrializing and the recently established Purdue University — with a more applied educational curriculum – was competing with IU for public and legislative support and to become the state’s “university.” As at other Midwest state universities, it was suggested that IU begin offering courses in commercial subjects. “He thought this a good way to bring Indiana’s businessmen into closer touch with their university,” historian Thomas D. Clark wrote of Swain in his book, “Indiana University: Midwestern Pioneer.” “He believed this would do for Indiana University in the field of business what agriculture did for Purdue and the farmers. Already there was a stirring in the university and the state which really demanded that both break out of the shell of the past and the restrictive old-line liberal arts college.” Foundations were prepared for professional programs, including the establishment of schools of medicine — which was dedicated after a protracted 11-year political battle, including with Purdue — education and business. Commerce courses were introduced to the economics curriculum in 1902.
