Both B and E looks similar
But E is a bit better than B in defining stalking...

Re: Probably as old as human society, and defined as "the willful, malicio [#permalink]
A. Probably as old as human society, and defined as 2the willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person", is stalking. --> Wrong comparison
B. Stalking is probably as old as human society and is defined as "the willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person".--> Correct
C. Probably as old as human society, the definition of stalking is "the willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person". --> wrong comparison
D. "The willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person" is the definition of stalking, which is probably as old as human society. --> verb form > noun form (defined > definition)
E. Probably as old as human society, stalking is defined as "he willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person". --> wrong comparison

IMO Option B

Probably as old as human society, and defined as "the willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person", is stalking.

A. Probably as old as human society, and defined as "the willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person", is stalking. --should be in the format of stalking is defined as xxxx. when "stalking" comes at the end of the sentence it's unclear.
B. Stalking is probably as old as human society and is defined as "the willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person". -- change the intend meaning
C. Probably as old as human society, the definition of stalking is "the willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person". -- the word stalking should be next to the modifying phase and the beginning of the sentence.
D. "The willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person" is the definition of stalking, which is probably as old as human society. -- like A
E. Probably as old as human society, stalking is defined as "the willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person". -- correct and clear

Therefore, E.

The right answer is option E in my view.

Option A. Probably as old as human society, and defined as the willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person", is stalking. Grammatically correct. We have a noun clause Probably as old as human society, and defined as the willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person" serving as subject of the verb is stalking. This is awkward at best, and inferior to option E. A simple noun subject such as Stalking in option E, is better than a noun clause. Eliminate A.

B. Stalking is probably as old as human society and is defined as "the willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person". Grammatically correct, but there is no need to repeat is after and. It is awkward to make the modifier parallel to the main sentence, which is the definition of stalking. This option is inferior to option E. Eliminate option B.

C. Probably as old as human society, the definition of stalking is "the willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person". This is wordy compared with option E. staking is defined as is more concise. Eliminate option C.

D. "The willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person" is the definition of stalking, which is probably as old as human society. A relative clause that conveys the same meaning as an adjectival phrase is considered wordy. Hence, this option is wordy compared with option E. Therefore eliminate option D.

E. Probably as old as human society, stalking is defined as "the willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person". Correct. The most grammatically correct and concise option.

E. Probably as old as human society, stalking is defined as "the willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person".

I'm a bit confused.

What is as old as human society? the act of stalking or the definition of stalking? It could be any of the two.

A. "Probably as…, and defined as" misplaced mod;
B. "S is prob as old as…and is…" shouldn't be parallel, this should be expressed as a modifier;
D. "which is" is unnecessary, "probably" would suffice;

C/E. differs in what is as old as human society, the definition of stalking or the act of stalking; it is unclear to me.

ie. Walking/Running/Breathing or the definition of Walking/R/B could both be as old as human society.

Probably as old as human society, and defined as "the willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person", is stalking.

A. Probably as old as human society, and defined as 2the willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person", is stalking. placement of modifiers is incorrect
B. Stalking is probably as old as human society and is defined as "the willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person". the placement of modifier is incorrect
C. Probably as old as human society, the definition of stalking is "the willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person". "Here the meaning is distorted by mentioning the probably as old as human society is definition of stalking"
D. "The willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person" is the definition of stalking, which is probably as old as human society. Correct the relative clause clearly modifies the word stalking. No modifier error
E. Probably as old as human society, stalking is defined as "he willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person". The use of he willful here makes the context of the sentence incorrect.

B is my answer.

I’m in between B&E. But, I will go for B.
Disconnected issues in B VS modifier issue in E.
As per modifier rules, issues should be RELATED.
But, “Staking is as old as human society” and “ Staking is a bad thing” ARE NOT RELATED issues.
So, I will go for AND to show that the issues are DISCONNECTED (option B).

D. "The willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person" is the definition of stalking, which is probably as old as human society.
E. Probably as old as human society, stalking is defined as "he willful, malicious, and repeated following and harassing of another person".

Official Explanation

Correct Answer: E

Choice a reverses the subject and predicate. Choice b is correct but is less effective than choice e because it sets up the two items of information as equal that stalking is probably as old as human society and its definition. Choice e uses probably as old as human society as an introduction to the focus of the sentence the definition of stalking. Choice e is also more direct and does not need to repeat the verb is. Choice c uses the phrase the definition of stalking is rather than the more direct stalking is defined as. Choice d puts the definition before the word being defined, which is less effective, making readers wait until they have finished the definition to find out what is being defined.

The typo in E needs to be corrected, as it completely changes everything about the answer choice.
