In Option A "for the attendees" is followed by "paused" in the sentence. is it correct? " for the attendees to pause makes much more sense

Read this for as because. A quick example:

1. She was confident, for she had prepared well.

This is the same (in terms of meaning) as saying

2. She was confident, because she had prepared well.

Re: The audience for the new opera, an inventive rendition of Wagner's Tri [#permalink]
The audience for the new opera, an inventive rendition of Wagner's Tristan and Isolde, was clearly enthralled by the show for the attendees paused for some moments before applauding vigorously at its conclusion.

(A) was clearly enthralled by the show, for the attendees --> correct

(B) were clearly enthralled by the show, for they --> audience is singular

(C) were clearly enthralled by the show, as they --> same as A

(D) was clearly enthralled by the show, for they --> same as A

(E) was clearly enthralled by the show, as is clear since its attendees --> meaning not clear i.e. what is clear?

Doesn't the use of because establish a causal relationship?
If we use because/for then the sentence would mean that The audience was enthralled because something. This is not the intended meaning.

This was the reason I chose E

Kindly correct me if I am wrong
