Hi - you're starting to build a strong profile, but since you're on the lower end in terms of work experience for CBS, I would consider waiting a year to apply, especially if you expect to be promoted in that time. Given how competitive admission is for Indian applicants, I'd aim for a 740+ GMAT. Hope that helps a bit!

Hi Everyone,

This might be a long post, so please bear with me. Please help me with my profile evaluation and my shot at Columbia

Profile
Indian Male- 23 Years old (25 at Matriculation)
B. Tech in CSE from top 10 pvt Engineering colleges in Inda. CGPA 7.2/10

Work Ex:
Full time- 26 months at the time of application, 37 months at the time of Matriculation
Deloitte USI, Risk and Financial Advisory
Primary Domain- IT Risk and Technology Compliance
Achievements at work:
- Primary engagement is Technology Compliance for a major American Retail brand. Even in my first year, led a critical part of the engagement (Evaluating client's access control), became the subject matter expert for the control in just 4 months. Helped the client bridge major SOX non- compliances across all their technology elements.
- In my second year of the engagement, I am leading very critical parts including the infrastructure compliance audits, User Access Reviews and other (Major chunk of the engagement). Typically, Senior Consultants (4-5 Years experience) are responsible for leading these critical parts.
- Since I work mostly on compliance engagements, there is not much scope for out of the box or innovative work. Yet, Proposed new tools (process automations) for walkthrough automation and access reviews which resulted in clients saving approximately 1500-man hours per financial year. These tools were my brain child and I worked on creating the use cases and workflows. Tools implemented in SOX compliance engagements across Deloitte US. Received accolades from Partners and directors for process improvement. (Post MBA Aim: Product Management)
- We have a quarterly performance evaluation system and an annual promotion system. Received the highest possible performance rating in all performance evaluations so far. Promoted within 10 months from an Analyst to Consultant. The firm follows a relative performance evaluation, my performance rating puts me in the top percentile of my peer group.
- 4 Outstanding Performance awards from the firm, 2 client appreciation awards. (unheard for somebody in 1 year)
- Various Firm and Practice development initiatives including promoting well being stories, ideating new ways to engage employees etc.
- Will be traveling onsite to client location for 2 weeks before I apply
- Have multiple internship experiences in college including interning for the Indian Railways. Worked on UI/ UX for an MIS for top level officials for Indian railways. Suggested reporting mechanisms and UX were integrated in the final version.

Leadership Experience
- Even in my first year, led critical aspects of the audit becoming one of the youngest SMEs in the firm for access controls.
- Led walkthroughs and client meetings
- In my second year with the firm, led and mentored 5 new analysts on the project. (Usually done by Senior Consultants)
- Head of the Literary Society in university
- Led a team of 30 volunteers to organize one of the Largest Model UN Conferences in North India. Saw a participation of ~350 students and 30 faculty members. Conference in collaboration with UNIC for India and Bhutan and other United Nations Agencies. Organized another MUN Conference that was recognized by the Secretary General Antonio Guetteres
- Was the City Youth Representative for the World Youth Council, an international NGO based out of New Delhi. Recruited Youth Change leaders and carried out the planning and execution for the 'Teach for Talent campaign'. The campaign was aimed at providing co- curricular training to underprivileged students from Tier 2 and Tier 3 Cities in the country. Covered 7 cities and 500+ students.

International Experience:
- Working with an international consulting firm. I work closely with cross functional international teams and stakeholders and directly with international clients. Daily interactions and collaboration with people situated all around the globe.
- Extensive Model United Nations experience. Over 100 MUN conferences (10+ Years) have shaped me into a truly global citizen and have made me aware of the issues that the world faces. This has given me a more holistic experience than any working/ staying abroad could have given. I have microscopically looked at international geopolitical problems and worked towards solving them in a student's/ young professional's capacity.
- One of the first Indians to preside over Rome Model UN Conference, Europe's larget UN Simulation.

Other Experiences/ Achievements
- Have mentored and trained 2000+ students in public speaking, debating, Model UNs and soft skills across the country over the course of the past 5 years. 800+ hours of training experience.

- Very strong co curriculars including multiple internships, debating, Model UNs, Science Fairs etc. International level debater, state table tennis champion, national level quizzer.
- Launched 2 online stores during college, handeled the Branding, Marketing and operations. One was for automative goods and the other was for Fandom merchandise. Both crossed 6 figures (INR) Turnover within 3 months.
- Established a Government of India registered Not for Profit Trust at the age of 20. The trust works for upliftment of economically backward students. We have also conducted vocational trainings for differently abled students.

- Professional Automotive Photographer. Clients include Buddh International Circuit (India's Formula 1 track), Mercedes, Eibach, Borla etc.

I'm yet to take the GMAT. Want to apply for the 2021 Intake. Post MBA Goals: Technology Management/ Product Management. I have my well thought out reasons for applying this early in my career. What will be a safe GMAT score for Columbia?

Hi, and thanks for writing! You have a really intriguing profile. You'll definitely want to make your motivations for undertaking an MBA very clear, including the inspiration for your venture. If you do so, and if you apply early (if CBS is a top choice for you and you can provide specific reasons for why) I think you can be a viable contender.

Regarding LORs: I would advise against getting a professor to provide your recommendation - these are discouraged. I recommend getting two recommendations from the company you used to work for, or perhaps one from a client of your current venture.

Hope that helps a bit! Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Hi, and thanks for writing! It sounds like you have a well-rounded profile. You'll want to make the motivation behind your goals very clear - what interests you in management consulting, and what about your experiences to date has inspired you to focus on process improvement and efficiency reviews? Be very clear on this, since MBA admissions committees always want to understand what led you to your ambitions. And CBS asks you about your DREAM job (not just your long-term goal) so you'll want to pick one of the two tracks you mentioned, explain why it interests you so much, and detail the impact you aspire to make in it.

Hope that helps!

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to apply this fall during the early round and would appreciate any insights on my profile!

Background and nationality: Canadian citizen but of Indian origin (born in India, moved to Canada when I was 2 years old).

Age/Work Experience: Will be 26 at entry, with 3.5 years of full time work experience with Big 4 consulting.

Undergrad Information: Regional university in Canada, not in the top 5 programs but in the top 15. GPA: 3.7
I was very involved in university, with case competitions, leadership position on student council, etc.

GMAT: 720

Work experience and leadership: Big 4 consulting with the public sector, focused on process improvement and efficiency reviews. Joined out of undergrad, and been promoted once since. Also involved in campus recruiting activities, and have a leadership role in certain business development activities in the office.

Community work: volunteer once a week, assisting new immigrants in the job search process.

Post MBA goals: short term- strategy consulting with MBB. Long term: pivot back to either the public sector (Especially something in foreign affairs) or executive role in the travel/hospitality industry (always been an industry that really interests me).

I would especially appreciate tips on my post MBA goals- not sure if they need to be more well-defined (i.e. does MBB sound too "vanilla"?)

Thank you in advance for your help!!

Hi, and thanks for writing! Unfortunately, the Master in Marketing Science is outside of mbaMission's area of expertise. Definitely reach out in the future if you're considering an MBA (for which you'd need 2-3 years of work experience minimum).

Hi, and thanks for writing! You have some great things going for you: solid academics, the fact that there aren't a lot of Ghanaian appliants to U.S. bschools, and meaningful extracurricular involvement, Additionally, it sounds like you've made good progress at the utility provider if you've been chosen to head its expansion efforts! From what I see, you'd be a viable candidate for CBS next year - applying ED is the right call as we've seen that it can be very beneficial for candidates who consider CBS their first choice. In your application, you'll want to demonstrate the underlying motivations behind your career goals (for example, why tech-focused banking in particular, and why do you aspire to start your own boutique firm someday?) and make a very strong case for why CBS and NYC are a strong fit for you professionally and personally.

Hope that helps!
Nisha

Hi Shishou,

I can imagine that you have some really unique stories to share, and your successes (and setbacks) can help you convey a compelling narrative for why Columbia. I do agree that ED is the right time for you to apply, especially because of your field of choice. I do recommend you spend some time being introspective (if you have not done so already), clearly articulating your goals and ambitions, and how Columbia will help you reach them.

Happy to discuss further. If interested in a "live" conversation, please reach out.

Good luck!

Hi there - you have an intriguing profile! It sounds like you've had some progressive work experience and some meaningful firmwide involvement as the head of the Women in Management Club. Regarding GMAT, the CBS average is 720, so I'd aim for that score or higher to give yourself the best shot. Also, I strongly suggest that you apply Early Decision to CBS, as early in the cycle as you are ready, as I've seen how much that can help. Best of luck!

Hi, and thanks for writing! CBS has an excellent family business program, so it makes sense that you're targeting this MBA program. In the five years you've been at the business, what has your progression been like in terms of responsibility and positions (I see you're a VP now?) If you have had strong progression and impact in this role, and if you can get strong recommenders (outside of the family, of course) who can attest to your performance, potential, and growth, that will put your application into contention.
For Indian applicants, those who are most successful have international experience, so I'm glad that you have represented the company abroad at events. Definitely detail this on your resume and application.

I see that you were very involved in extracurriculars college - have you continued with cricket and the NGO post-college too? If so, this would strengthen your profile.

Given how competitive admission is for Indian applicants, I strongly recommend applying Early Decision as soon as possible (the application usually opens in May) as that will give you the best shot. Best of luck!
