I got an interview invite yesterday, but the email says because they couldn't match with alum so adcoms will conduct an interview on skype. Is this positive or negative, given alums are more laid back while adcoms would have gone through your application so it would be more grilling?
Kellogg tries to interview as many candidates as possible. Once they run out of alums in an area, they start filling up adcom members' calendars with skype interviews. Having an adcom interview vs a skype vs on campus is all the same, the only difference is if you perform better in a certain setting vs another. The % of admits among interviewed candidates is around 30%. Any chance to interview is always a good thing, but it is not the same positive signal as it is with other interview invites from other schools, and the format does not matter.
My interview was a skype interview with adcom, it was a blind interview, and there was no "grilling". Because Kellogg puts so much emphasis on culture fit, the interview is one of the most important parts of the application and they want to make sure there are no "false positives" or "false negatives" and interviewers (whether adcom, alum, or student) all go through the same training process so that they are as equal and calibrated as possible.
Just do your best and try not to stress about any "hidden meanings" often people see hidden meanings where there are none, which is likely the case here.
