.5x+12=.5x*1.1
x= 240
IMO E

Let maximum marks be x

Lily got 0.5x (50% of max marks)

Given: she failed by 12 marks and had she got 10% more than what she got, she wouldve passed.

Equation:

0.5x*0.1 = 12
0.5x = 12/0.1
x = 120/0.5

x= 240

Hence maximum marks = 240

Answer : E

For me, it seems that the right asnwer is B.

Given: Lily failed while got 50% of the mark. She needs 10% more or 12 points.
So, 12 points = 10%, and 120 points = 100%

Try to check: Lily scored 60 points (50% 0f 120) and she needs to get 72 points (60% of 120) for passing an exam.

Could you please show me my mistake?

Let maximum marks be x
Lily scored 50% of the maximum marks in an exam and yet failed by 12 marks
Passing marks = (x/2) + 12----(i)

Had she scored 10% more than what he scored, she would have just got passing marks
Passing marks = 1.1(x/2)----(ii)

(x/2) + 12 = 1.1(x/2)
x = 240

E is correct.

Let the maximum marks be x

50% of x + 12 = 10% more than what he scored. ( He scored 50% of x = ½*x)
½*x +12 = 110/100 * ½*x
½*x +12 = 11/10* ½*x
11*x/20 – ½*x = 12
x/20 = 12
x = 240(E)

10% of 50%.... Not 10%0 of total marks... Hope it helps ?

it is not correct because the question states that she had to take an additional 10% of her grade to pass the exam and not an additional 10% of the maximum grade. Thus it does not mean that she has to take 60% of the maximum grade (as you stated).

According to other answers 12= 0.5x*0.1 where x= maximum grade
