For Juanita to get to the zoo she must take either the number 12 bus or else the subway. Everyone knows that the number 12 bus is not running this week; so although Juanita generally avoids using the subway, she must have used it today, since she was seen at the zoo this afternoon.
The argument shows only two possible ways for Juanita to reach the zoo. The author is so certain that she used the subway (Because he uses the word must have ). Hence we can assume that there are no other possible ways for her to reach the zoo.
Now, let's look at the answer options.
(A) assert that if something is true, it will be known to be true
The argument doesn't say that, if she takes the subway definitely she will go to the zoo So this option is out of scope
(B) demonstrate that certain possibilities are not exclusive
But the argument says the other way. Incorrect
(C) show that something is the case by ruling out the only alternative
Exactly in line with our analysis. Correct Answer
(D) explain why an apparent exception to a general rule is not a real
The argument deals with a general observation, not any rules and exceptions
(E) substitutes a claim about what invariably occurs for a claim about what typically occurs
out of scope
