FROM Kelley MBA Blog: Here’s practical advice for teaching online, from an expert at the IU Kelley School of Business |
The Kelley Direct online MBA program at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business consistently is ranked No. 1 by U.S. News and World Report and other news organizations. Sarah Smith-Robbins, director of learning technologies at Kelley, can discuss the transition that many colleges and universities are having to make, from in-person to online instruction. Smith-Robbins offers these tips: Don’t try to recreate your classroom:“Learning online is different, just as holding a virtual meeting is different from an in-person meeting. Both residential class meetings and virtual class meetings have their drawbacks and their benefits. Take advantage of those benefits. For example, in an online meeting, more than one student can ask a question at a time in the chat. They can even answer one another’s questions there without interrupting the instructor. It’s also far easier for students to get together as teams and collaborate when they’re all online. Encourage them to do so.” Let your hair down just a little: “Virtual class meetings allow you and your students to see one another in a different setting than in a classroom. Personalize the space that students see behind you when you’re on camera. Let them know a little bit about who you are that you wouldn’t typically be able to share. Login to live sessions a bit early to chat casually with students who are there. That informal communication matters.” Consider the wide range of student circumstances: “Some students may have gone home to a fast internet connection and a great computer. Others may have to park their car in a parking lot to access free WIFI on a borrowed laptop. In either circumstance, your students want to learn. Do what you can to meet them where they are. For example, if you’re posting a pre-recorded lecture to your course, record it in a few short videos rather than one long one. The file sizes will be smaller and students will still see the whole lecture. If you’re planning to host live class meetings, understand that not all students will have the bandwidth to attend or might lose their connection in the middle of class. Post a recording of the session afterwards so everyone can participate. If you can cut the recording into several small videos, even better.” Learn from other instructors:“It’s not often that faculty sit in on one another’s residential classes. In a typical semester, you may have little reason in to compare notes on teaching methods with other faculty. However, you now have a perfect reason to compare what you’re doing to ensure that your students continue to learn. Why not practice holding online meetings by meeting with fellow faculty to share ideas about converting your courses to online delivery? Make use of your department’s mailing list to ask questions and learn from one another. If you’ve taught online before, offer yourself as a resource to faculty in your department who haven’t.” Think of it as an adventure:“Though the situation that brought us to this point of teaching online at short notice is dire, we’re all in it together. No one expects your online course to be perfect. Consider it an adventure that you and your students are on together. They’ll forgive your mistakes and make a few of their own. Connecting with one another, even online with a few hiccups, will go a long way to ensuring that students still feel connected, considered, and cared for.” |

FROM Kelley MBA Blog: Kelley School provides access to free access to information for businesses navigating through the COVID-19 crisis |
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – In addition to being a public health issue, the novel coronavirus is endangering many businesses across the country and in Indiana. The Indiana University Kelley School of Business is responding to this need by providing free access to useful information through its Business Horizons journal and The ROI Podcast produced at the school at IUPUI. Greg Fisher, the Larry and Barbara Sharpf Professor and an associate professor of entrepreneurship (pictured left), edits Business Horizons and has put together a collection past articles from the journal about how businesses can respond to this crisis. Published bimonthly in partnership with Elsevier Ltd., Business Horizons often tackles important questions, challenges and matters facing the business arena. Elsevier is hosting the collection online and has made the included articles free for 90 days. This is a joint effort between Business Horizons and Elsevier. “COVID-19 has created crises for many, and the ensuing social, health, and economic challenges require innovative and responsive solutions.,” Fisher said. “This is a time when we need leaders who are willing to adopt innovative business practices, scholars who embark on novel research to solve real problems, and a broad exchange of ideas to figure out ways to address challenges. “With this in mind, we have put together a collection of articles from our archives that address issues within the five themes listed above. We hope these articles will serve as a catalyst for solving impending business challenges and for prompting new research and discourse,” he added. The articles draw attention to key issues associated with the pandemic and highlights solutions to some of the challenges we all must confront. Articles in the collection are grouped into five themes – Crisis, Economic and Social Struggles, Healthcare System Stress, Social Distancing and Supply-Chain Stress. Beginning March 23, the producers of the ROI Podcast at Kelley Indianapolis began producing a series of episodes also meant to provide reliable guidance. “Our show’s mission is to help organizations make better business decisions. With a massive economic shutdown impacting our organizations, we have put together our most relevant podcasts to help your organization weather the financial storm,” they said to introduce the series. Among those featured in the podcast are Angela Smith, Indianapolis deputy major of economic development, who talks about how we can lead ourselves and our teams through troubling times; and Jeff Fettig, former Whirlpool CEO, who offers tips on handling an economic crisis. Neal Rothermel, founder of VMS BioMarketing and the inaugural Executive in Residence for the Tobias Leadership Center. May these Kelley resources help you in facing challenges we all confront in one way or another. |

FROM Kelley Connect - Career Services Blog: Job Market Watch – Weekly Update |
Where we are at: It’s been an interesting ride the past few weeks with fears increasing around COVID-19, states essentially shutting down a lot of companies and the stock markets swinging to new highs and lows, depending on the day. The unemployment numbers that came out last Thursday were the highest weekly filings EVER at 3.3m (the previous weekly high was around 700,000 in 1982). This number is expected to continue to increase over the next few weeks as hospitality, restaurants and similar companies continue to suffer the effects of the shutdown. If you just follow the headlines and watch the news, it’s all doom and gloom. However, it’s actually not as bad as you’d think. We are seeing an unbalancing of industries, with industries such as airlines, hotels, cruise ships, retail, luxury goods and some manufacturing being hit really hard. However, other industries such as logistics, online retail, healthcare, grocery, some technology and electronics, and sanitation are growing significantly. These companies are being overwhelmed and need to be hiring a lot of new people to meet demand. LinkedIn is suggesting that companies that are hiring add in hashtags such as #hiringnow and #coronavirushiring, so utilize those hashtags if you are still searching. What we are hearing from companies: UCS has been proactively reaching out to our companies to find out if there are any changes with hiring for internships and/or full time roles. As of today, the majority of companies are staying with the status quo and things are continuing as normal. There might be some adjustments to employment dates or the roles may start out virtual (or be entirely virtual), but they are still honoring their employment commitments. We are seeing some companies, mostly in areas that are harder hit by the shutdown, backing out of their internship offers and a very few backing out of full time roles. However, we are seeing some of these same companies already coming to us looking to book fall recruiting dates. We will continue to be in touch with all of these companies to make sure that we are on top of changes. What should you be doing now:

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Faculty at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business are using innovative methods and their personal resources in the battle against the novel coronavirus pandemic that has now affected the lives of more than 3,000 Hoosiers and more than 245,000 people nationwide. Many of those efforts arose from an “Idea Sprint” organized by several management and entrepreneurship professors. They pulled together more than 200 entrepreneurs, coders, engineers, medical doctors, nurses, venture capitalists and other business professionals, who worked virtually and developed 19 potential solutions for problems arising from COVID-19. Participants came from all across the United States and Canada and from four other continents, Australia, Europe, Asia and South America. The initiative was organized in just three days and led to the development of social initiatives addressing issues such as the shortage of surgical masks, grocery stock outs, displaced workers, small business matchmaking and online educational challenges now impacting students across the country. “We all know there are great ideas out there related to this crisis. We wanted to find a way to quickly bring entrepreneurs, medical professionals, and technologists from around the world together to work intensively on solutions,” said one of the organizers, Regan Stevenson (pictured right), assistant professor of entrepreneurship and management and the John and Donna Shoemaker Faculty Fellow. “In order to do this, we knew we needed to move fast and step outside the institutional structure to get this movement off the ground immediately.” “As the ideas came in, we recognized that people were sending them from all over the world,” added Matthew Josefy (pictured left), assistant professor of strategy and entrepreneurship. Some participants voiced their excitement about being mobilized in this way to pass their time in quarantine after returning from affected countries, with one saying “I haven’t been able to leave my house in a week. I’ve been here on the sidelines, wishing there was some way I could plug in and do something.” What happened first at Kelley is now being imitated by others worldwide, including a joint project by TechStars and GoogleforStartups and initiatives at Texas A&M University, Valdosta State University and MassChallenge. Facebook and Microsoft are partnering with the World Health Organization for a “coronavirus hackathon.” Projects making an impact Many of the projects are in various degrees of development. One project — #RealHeroesWearMasks – will soon direct more than 20,000 masks to 32 hospitals in Chicago, New York City, New Orleans and the states of New York, New Jersey, Indiana, California and Georgia. It also is building alliances with other organizations with a similar goal of increasing the supply of personal protection equipment into the life-saving doctors and nurses who need them. “Our movement started as a weekend idea sprint which was supposed to be handed off to entrepreneurs who could make it happen,” said Dr. Amani Jambhekar, a Houston-based cancer surgeon and a student in the Kelley Direct online MBA program who contributed the project idea. “It turns out we’re the entrepreneurs, and this project has already engaged so many healthcare professionals looking for a way to give back to our front lines.” Kelley faculty, students and administrators have been working behind the scenes, using business contacts to locate makers of N95 and surgical masks. Students in the 2019 and 2020 classes of Kelley’s online Master of Science in Finance degree program with Tsinghua Holding Zijing Education are donating about 20,000 masks. Jun Yang (pictured right), director of the Institute of Corporate Governance, associate professor of finance and Arthur M. Weimer Faculty Fellow, helped make the arrangements. They were purchased from reputable producers in China and are being shipped to the United States. Masks will go to hospitals in Indianapolis, New York City, Houston, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Highland Park, New Jersey and Marietta, Georgia. #RealHeroesNeedMasks is helping to direct them to where they are most needed. Other projects coming out of Kelley’s idea sprint that are at various stages of development include:
Two faculty members in the Department of Operations and Decision Technologies – Jonathan Helm and Aaron Perry — are part of team that IU Health created to develop a model on the impact of COVID-19 patients on its resources. The team evolved from researcher initiatives at the Center for the Business of Life Sciences, directed by George Telthorst. Helm oversees the center’s research initiatives. Indiana State Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Kristina Box has said she expects Indiana’s case peak to hit in mid-to-late April. Hospitals in Indianapolis and other cities across the state are preparing for a surge of COVID-19 patients, similar to what is being seen in New York City, Seattle and New Orleans. Helm (pictured left), an associate professor and Grant Thornton Scholar, researches healthcare operations management and patient flow and health care resource management. Perry, a lecturer, is an expert on predictive modeling and health and clinical informatics. Business education continues All of this is happening in addition to continuing to deliver a quality education online to more than 11,000 Kelley students at all levels. “I have never been more proud to be dean of the Kelley School than I have these last few weeks,” Idalene “Idie” Kesner, dean and the Frank P. Popoff Chair of Strategic Management, said in a message to faculty and staff. “All of you – both faculty and staff – have consistently demonstrated the Kelley tenacity and humility of which we are so proud – not to mention creativity and flexibility. “Faculty have pivoted on short notice and embraced the idea of online learning,” she added. “Staff are working hard to find creative solutions to support both faculty and the students as they work through the impact of all these changes.” |
FROM Kelley Connect - Career Services Blog: This is NOT normal! |
Juniors — this is not normal! Please know that during times of “not normal” the normal doesn’t apply. What does that mean? Resumes will look different, experiences will look different and internships will look different. The standard measure of experience for full time hiring will also look different and we have no crystal ball as to what that will ultimately look like but the one thing we can guarantee is that it will look different than last year! If you don’t have a summer internship secured or if your summer internship has been canceled or altered that’s OK! There are other things you can do this summer to have a productive summer experience. Volunteer, create your own research project, talk to professionals in the field you’re pursuing, learn something new (taking classes or through less formal vehicles online). Just make sure you’re doing something and have a story to tell about why you’re doing it! Most important, if you have concerns talk to a career coach. We’re still here to support you. We have appointments available daily in Kelley Connect and drop-ins are still being conducted via zoom. Simply email ucso@indiana.edu if you have any difficulties! |

FROM Kelley Connect - Career Services Blog: Job Market Watch – Weekly Update (4/6/20) |
Where we are at: Every week, a new adventure. This past week saw a HUGE increase in the new weekly unemployment filings, hitting 6.6 million for the week and now close to 10 million for the past two weeks combined. This number will likely continue to increase as we see further repercussions from the COVID-19 induced shutdowns. It’s important for you to recognize this time as something very different than anything seen before. There have obviously been recessions or other events that have caused economic slowdowns, but this one is different as it is affecting everyone around the world at the same time. It hit hard and fast and no one knows what the playing field looks like as it changes every day. It’s extremely important to remember that THIS IS NOT ABOUT YOU. This is way, way bigger than that. People are dying, global economies are at a standstill and companies are struggling to remain viable and are making decisions in order to survive. What we are hearing from companies: A positive is that companies learned from the 2008/2009 recession that cutting all employment offers and laying off workers put them into a situation where they weren’t set up well to rebound quickly, as well as it hurt their employment reputations. It’s taken years for many companies to build back that reputation, which is likely what is keeping companies in the hiring field right now. We are seeing an increased number of companies cancelling their internships, although most are still planning on holding them, albeit in a possibly different format. More are shortening their internships (pushing them out to later dates in the summer) and looking at virtual possibilities. Most full time roles are still going on as planned, maybe with the starting dates shifting. Remember that there are still companies who are hiring, so continue to check Kelley Connect regularly. What should you be doing now: As I mentioned last week, you should be in contact with our office. Let us know if you’ve accepted an internship or full time role and let us know if anything changes with those options. If you are still seeking, let us know that as well. Your internship (or full time role) may not end up as hoped for or planned for given the crazy environment we currently live in, but there are still a lot of great options for you to consider for the summer:

The impact that COVID-19 is having on the hiring and economic outlook is not in the scope of your control, but taking steps to cultivate relationships is. Focus on the long game of the career search and know that the work you put in now will pay off when the economy rebounds, or sooner! We are still receiving reports of new offers and companies are still pursuing talent for full time opportunities. If you are concerned, need advice, or just want to talk with someone other than your parents, we’re here for you! |
FROM Kelley Connect - Career Services Blog: Job Market Watch – Weekly Update (4/13/20) |
Where we are at: We continued to see a big increase in the new weekly unemployment filings last Thursday, bringing the total unemployment filings for the past three weeks to around 17 million. Something like this peak has never been experienced before, mostly because of the speed in which everything was shut down and stopped. This week starts corporate earnings season, which should provide more details on the impact of the pandemic shutdown on corporate profits. This could also give some clues about the corporate outlook for the rest of the year. What we are hearing from companies: Our office continues to reach out and connect with companies and we continue to hear that most companies are trying to keep their internships/full time roles. We are seeing more companies moving to shorter durations for their internships, some cutting their internships down to 1-2 weeks total. They are working very hard to make this shortened experience still relevant and interesting for their interns and are coming up with creative ways to make this happen. Many (if not most) are going virtual as no one is exactly sure when work will begin to return to a normal cadence. Full time roles are still going forward as planned, although we are seeing a few more push backs on start dates. Despite all of this, remember that there are STILL companies hiring, so make sure to be checking Kelley Connect regularly. Last week we had 69 new roles posted, with a mix of full time and internships. What you should be doing now: You should connect with our office RIGHT AWAY if:
