What is the duration of those internships?

Lacking work experience is not the best thing. Also if you work in finance, you need experience with businesses and not just courses and lectures, they don't teach you about the structure of business but just about numbers(You will get accepted for MS F., but your skills won't be that great)

The volunteering is just extra points but nothing to stress about too much. The stock trading is interesting depending on details of success and your understanding.

It is enough for MS F. because the standards are not as high as people believe but for personal development and be able to grow as a specialist you need deeper understanding of how a business works. Naked numbers are meaningless but still most of the people are exactly this type of "Number Experts" :D

GPA: 6.5/10 (Private Indian University)
GMAT: 770/800, Q:50, V:44, AWA:5, IR:7
1 research paper on mathematical modelling published, with the co-author having an Erdos number of 3.

I'm looking for universities in Europe or Singapore, like Gallen, HEC, NUS, ESADE, ESSEC, etc (overlooking USA/UK/Canada due to low GPA.)
Knowing that the universities mentioned are all top-tier, if you feel that I'll be unable to get in, do give alternatives.

Thank You for taking your time and any advice is welcome!

Hi, You have a great GMAT score to compensate for a low GPA. So, you need to show this in your essays/SOPs. All the best.

I am in the process of applying for Finance MScs starting in 2020. I prefer 2-year courses due to limited work experience. I am from the UK but am only applying outside of the Anglosphere to get international experience before the language-learning part of my brain calcifies completely. My preference ranking is something like this

1. Bocconi MSc Finance
2. ESSEC MSc Finance
3. Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance MSc Finance
4. HEC Paris MSc International Finance
5. ESADE MSc Finance
6. University of St Gallen MBF Banking and Finance (mainly because Swiss working culture sounds like the bomb)

I graduated from Oxford last year in Politics, Philosophy and Economics. I specialised in mathematical economics and econometrics papers but missed out on a First overall (by <0.5%) because of a poor finals mark in a mathematical econ paper (low 2:2 vs average of a clear First in my other papers). So 3.7/4 GPA overall but with a 3.3/4 in first year. No research projects

My GMAT was moved to the interim online assessment due to coronavirus. On practice tests I am averaging 740-750 (range of 730-770 with around Q50 V40). I understand the GMAT plays a heavy role in scholarships so I am hoping to boost this with more verbal revision (so far have focussed almost exclusively on quant)

Very limited work experience - a couple of weeks work experience with a trading team at Investec years ago, also did some research assistant stuff at Oxford (on an intellectual biography of Friedman, not really relevant) and then just tutoring/student jobs.

Also limited international experience - short volunteering stints at a refugee camp - and don’t speak other languages apart from limited French.

My letters of recommendation will be good (although I understand Bocconi doesn’t consider them at all...). One is from my personal tutor and Vice-Master of my college (Balliol), who has known me well since the beginning of my course. He taught me Politics but knows my subject reports+econ performance well (my impression was that with Finance they are interested in a broader picture than a more academic course like Econometrics Masters which I am also applying to).
The other is my macro tutor who’s a big name in his field (international macro). Taught me every week 2-3 on 1 for months but doesn’t remember undergrads’ names. He will base his reference on the work I did, which was good.

One thing I am worried about, since I graduated in 2019, is how the year out will look to an admissions committee. I basically applied for grad schemes mostly at the global asset managers but didn’t get any of the offers I wanted so have also been applying for Finance and Econometrics Masters (mostly 2 years to get back on the summer intern recruitment track as I didn’t do a summer internship).

I was offered an equity research internship at a wealth management but this has been messed up by coronavirus. By the time the lockdown is lifted the gap on my CV since graduating will be quite long. (I haven’t been completely idle - have been working with an education charity and did some tutoring with a program delivering tutoring services to disadvantaged students but no finance work, have also been studying for level 1 of the CFA and done some coding courses).

After graduating I want to work at an institutional asset manager, preferably in a quantitative or multi-asset team (which also leads to my preference for Bocconi with the quantitative focus+AM specialisation)

On the basis of this information, how would my profile stand in the admissions process? Are there any other institutions that might be a good fit?

Hey capybara123,

Well, you have a pretty decent academic score of 3.7/4 overall.
Also, if you are averaging a GMAT score of 740-750 on practice tests, I believe you would be able to pull off a good score given that you continue to boost your performance.
Although your work experience is limited, highlighting some key achievements with the trading team at Investec and at Oxford can prove to be a valuable asset in building a strong application.

Apart from academics and work experience, you have a beginner’s level knowledge of French language and a volunteering experience at a refugee camp. If highlighted appropriately, it can be a part of your holistic profile.

You can also utilize this time of lockdown to your benefit by learning an additional language or equipping yourself with finance-related knowledge through online courses.
Having said that, Yes, a gap year in your profile is a weakness but it can be compensated by providing relevant and logical reasons. Coronavirus is a global pandemic so you can mention that you were offered a job but could not join due to the same. Also, it’s good that you have not been completely idle and have something on your plate that you can showcase to the Adcom. You can also mention your work with education charity and tutoring to compensate for the gap year.

Additionally, your studies for level 1 of the CFA will help you as most of the Masters in Finance programs partner with the CFA Institute.
Your strong recommendation letters would also be an asset in the application documents.

Also, for the schools you have selected, here is a brief idea on how selective they are:
HEC and the University of St. Gallen are dream schools which means the acceptance rate in these universities is around 25%. So, to ensure admission here you would need a very very strong application with a perfect combination of academics, professional experience, and extracurriculars that aligns with your goals.
On the other hand, ESSEC, ESADE, and Bocconi are super competitive with an acceptance rate of around 50%. They take each application into a very thorough consideration before making a decision.
Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance is a pretty safe school with an acceptance rate of around 75%.

Apart from this, a few other schools you can target if you are not looking out in a specific country are:
DREAM- LBS, MIT(Sloan), ESCP, Imperial
COMPETITIVE- Warwick, WHU, EDHEC
SAFE- Cass, Texas A&M University, Grenoble Ecole De Management, Skema

Lastly, I would recommend you to focus on drafting an application that stands out in order to counter your gap year. For help in building a strong application that can assure your chances of admission, you can check out our All-in-One-Service via the link below:

Hi TheDarkAmethyst,

Firstly, I would like to say that your overall profile is fairly good.
Your GPA, GMAT, GRE and IELTS exam scores make your profile quite strong.
Further, the internships you undertook like at IIM and Royal Bank of Scotland attach a brand name to your professional exposure and make you an ideal fit for the MS Finance degree program. It’s commendable that you did internships in the niche you plan to build your career in, i.e., in Finance.

In contrast to MOOCs, the CFA charter adds more value to your profile strength and would help you take a big jump in the finance field in the long-run.

Another strong aspect of your profile is your participation in various extracurricular activities. Most schools seek well-rounded applicants. Thus, in that sense, it would help you showcase your application comprehensively.
For social welfare activities, it’s important to quantify your statements in your application. For instance, you’ve mentioned that you taught local community kids for 3 consecutive years. So, here you are also required to state how many students you taught in total. Quantifying such pointers would make your application more impactful.

Some schools that you may target are- University of Illinois, Duke, Imperial College London, ESCP Europe, IE Business School, and EDHEC.

Lastly, I would like to let you know that the way you would be presenting your application would make all the difference in driving the school’s decision in your favor. Not just your resume/cv, in fact, all other application documents showcase the distinctiveness of your profile and the skillset you possess.

On that note, you can check out our all in one service that is inclusive of all application-related assistance - from counseling and editing essays, resumes and LORs to interview preps.

The all in one service is known to increase acceptance chances by 3x! I’m attaching the link below:

Hey KdX41,

Well, you have a pretty interesting profile and I must say that you have done a great job with your GMAT score. In fact, It can be considered as one of the major highlights of your profile and it’ll surely help you get an edge over the other applicants.
1 research paper on mathematical modeling and your multiple Finance Related Projects also looks good, however, you would need to go deeper into the details.

As far as your academics are concerned, as you have already mentioned, GPA is comparatively a bit on the lower side especially for HEC which is notorious for recruiting only from the Tier 1 UG colleges of the applicant's nationality.

Now, it is not that these elements cannot be compensated for - No applicant has the perfect profile so it does come down to how you can showcase that you are above and beyond your profile weaknesses. So, I’d suggest you to dig deeper into your profile to come up with a combination of other profile strengths and experiences that will help you to make your profile stand out.

Apart from this, I’d like you to know is that other than the GMAT & GPA, there are lots of factors like Work-experience, Extra-curricular, etc. that play an important role in the Application Process. Hence, you have provided a bit of limited information for me to give you an accurate estimation of your chances in the mentioned schools.

Overall, I strongly suggest that targeting a heterogeneous mix of schools is a good strategy to go with and to make it easier for you, below I’ve mentioned the best schools according to your profile which I’ve divided into Dream, Competitive and Safe categories:

Dream: ESSEC, ESCP, RSM
Competitive: EDHEC, FSFM, ESMT
Safe: SKEMA, IESE

In my experience, applicants often underestimate their profile and aim for lower-ranked schools.
We can help you figure out the right strategy trough our All in one service which is inclusive of solutions to all your application woes - from counseling and essay editing to interview prep!

Where are you from?
Depending on this it might be a good idea to go in a different direction. For example Asia if you are western and you have been to a western uni.
You will also have no trouble at all getting scholarships(even full ones with accommodation and monthly allowances)

The unis you wrote down are good but are they enough? If you choose Asian one you will have better connections, learn language and have much more opportunities due to cultural knowledge and a bigger exposure.

Just think about it. Spending huge amount of money for something that will not be immensely better might not be the best choice. the level is the same but due to connections and culture, the choice could be worse than going to a famous uni in Asia.

Think Global not Local (The western world is limited and becoming Local in a sense. On top of this Asia pays much much better)

How are my chances looking? Thanks

Hey moike,
You have a fairly good profile - UK Schools are high on academics so the GPA and college rank work.
GMAT is within range for Oxford, LBS and LSE
This being said, you have 3 highly competitive schools on your list (Oxford,LBS,LSE) which have paper thin acceptance rates. Having a CFA, strong social volunteering experience, etc would have added more weight to your profile.Plus you will be competing with applicants with a wider experience in finance, so make sure to highlight all your finance related activities .
Imperial and Warwick are reachable with a strong application.
I would be able to help you out better (Gauge the selection chances more accurately) if I have more details about your profile.
Can you mail me your resume at support@mim-essay.com?
I know this sounds like a commercialized ID, but I personally read and reply to all the queries totally free of cost :)
Let me know !

Hi MiM Essay,

I did not follow up with the resume as I was worried about data etc.

However, I registered for CFA and applied to all school mentioned.

I have been admitted to all programs with partial scholarship from LBS.

Thanks for your time, I think CFA helped! But also my written application was pretty good.

Congratulations on your admit :)

You should get in relatively easily, assuming you do not flub the interview or something. Strong GPA, good honors, internships, etc. Either program should be fine, but I would probably put preference for the MSF. I'd ask for some money as well (scholarship/grant, whatever).

Good luck!

Im graduated from a top Turkish university with BA in Economics. I have a 2.60/4.00 GPA and 2 month summer internship in a Turkish investment bank.

For which B schools I am eligible for ? (those who waived GMAT and with GMAT Score).

Honestly, you have too much work experience for the only US MSF you mentioned (SMU). That program isn't requiring a GMAT right now because of COVID.

All the other programs you mention are top notch so competition will be stiff. You do have some good work experience and non-US MSF programs tend to have older students as the MBA is not as common outside of the US.
