Toynbee was a scholar of Greece and Rome, with a preference for the former, and a close student of Byzantulum and of the modern Balkans are apparent on every page of his last book.

A) Toynbee was a scholar of Greece and Rome, with a preference for the former, and a close student of Byzantulum and of the modern Balkans are - The only subject that can take the plural verb 'are' is ''Balkans''. So, if this were true, then the sentence becomes "......Balkans are apparent on every page of his last book"; this doesn't make any sense. Hence, we can eliminate (A).

B) Toynbee being a scholar of Greece and Rome, with a preference for the former, and a close student of Byantium and of the modern Balkans are - The sentence now becomes '' Toynbee being.......are apparent on every page of his last book"; this does not make any sense. Hence, eliminate (B).

C) That Toynbee was a scholar of Greece and Rome, with the preference for the former, and a close student of Byzantium and of the modern Balkans are - The 'That' clause is used to express a fact. Hence, it must be matched by a singular verb. But in (C), we have the plural verb 'are'. Therefore, we have a subject-verb agreement error here. Hence, we can eliminate (C).

D) That Toynbee was a scholar of Greece and Rome, with a preference for the former, and a close student of Byzantium and of the modern Balkans is - (D) has perfect subject-verb agreement. Moreover, there is no error here. Hence, (D) is the right answer choice.

E) Toynbee, a scholar of Greece and Rome with a preference for the former, and a close student of Byzantium and of the modern Balkans, which is - Here, the relative clause ''which is....'' tries to modify the noun "Balkans". we cannot use ''which'' to refer to people. hence, we can eliminate (E).

If you find this explanation helpful, please do give it a kudos  :)

Toynbee was a scholar of Greece and Rome, with a preference for the former, and a close student of Byzantulum and of the modern Balkans are apparent on every page of his last book.

POE:
Eliminate (A), (B), (C) - Subject-verb agreement error; Toynbee is singular, we need a singular verb 'is'
Eliminate (E) - which is referring to 'Balkans', we need plural verb 'are'

Toynbee was a scholar of Greece and Rome, with a preference for the former, and a close student of Byzantulum and of the modern Balkans are apparent on every page of his last book.

- Toynbee is described here as "a scholar" and "a student" and him having both the qualities "is" apparent.
With this in mind we can eliminate A , B, and C.
E is incorrect in its usage and reference of "which"

B) Toynbee being a scholar of Greece and Rome, with a preference for the former, and a close student of Byantium and of the modern Balkans are
