Re: Kenya’s Patrick Makau set a new world record in the Berlin 2011 marath [#permalink]
Kenya’s Patrick Makau set a new world record in the Berlin 2011 marathon; never in the history of marathon did anyone display so exceptional performance as what he did in Berlin.

Here the comparison is between the performance of Patrick Makau and other athletes

A) so exceptional performance as what he did in Berlin - what he did in Berlin is not parallel with did anyone display and so.. as usage is in appropriate here
B) so exceptional performance that he did in Berlin - so ...that - shows cause & Effect relationship - which is wrong in this context
C)such exceptional performance as he did in Berlin - Such ...as usage is correct & did anyone display is parallel to as he did in Berlin
D)such exceptional performance as he has done in Berlin - he has done is present perfect which is incorrect in this context because the action is past here and uses simple past
E) such exceptional performance as his in Berlin - his in Berlin is not parallel to did anyone display

Please let me know for any corrections.

Dear Experts,

Could you pls elaborate on this one, b/w C and E, I chose E thinking, Such X as Y, exceptional performance is being compared, and I need another noun.

As I see the discussion too, I fail to pick on what I missed.

Thank you.

Hello ap2201,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, here the comparison is actually between the verb phrases "anyone display" and "he did in Berlin"; the comparison marker is the entire phrase "such exceptional performance", which acts as an adverbial phrase on the verb "display".

We hope this helps.
All the best!
