M+J=2(M-R)..........M+J=2M-2R.............J=M-2R
groups average = \(\frac{A+R+M+J}{4}=\frac{A+A+M+M-2A}{4}=\frac{2M}{4}\)
we require M's value

(1) Arty’s sales goal is $50,000
M not known
insuff

(2) Martha’s sales goal is 60,000

Question stem:-
Average sales goal=?

Given, A=R, J+R=2(M-R) or, J=M-2R
Total no of goals=A+M+J+R=A+R+2(M-R)=A+R+2M-2R=A-R+2M=A-A+2M=2M
Or, Total no of goals=A+M+J+R=A+R+J+J+2R=A+A+2J+2R=4A+2J
So, Average sales goal=\(\frac{2M}{4}=\frac{M}{2}\)------------(a)
Or, Average sales goal=\(\frac{4A+2J}{4}\)-------------------------------------------(b)

St1:- A=$50,000, from (a) & (b),we need M or J to determine average sales goal.So, not sufficient.
St2:- M=$60,000, from(a), we can determine average sales goal, So, sufficient.

This is just based on simplifying the question stem. If you are focussing enough on that, the question really is not that difficult....And for a DS question, C is mostly a trap(especially on the difficult questions) ...Do not answer C unless you are crystal clear about everything...If at all you need to guess on a DS question, never choose a C...

So J=M-2R

M = 60,000 R=50,000

How is this possible?



Yes, you are correct. Logically, the sales goal cannot be negative. Value of A given in statement 1 should be not greater than 30000, and is, therefore, not correct.

Bunuel GMATinsight

While I agree with the simplification of the question and thus proceeding with the statements I want have a doubt with the following:

we are given that

A = R
M + J = 2(M - R)

Now if we combine the two statements we get

60,000 + J = 2(60,000 - 50,000)
60,000 + J = 20,000

But how is that possible? J cannot be a negative value?
