Thank you Admissionado, very informative, and everything makes sense.

Wharton's application asks whether I've taken that test, literally "Have you taken the GMAT?" and "Have you taken the GRE?"

I can choose to submit only my GRE score, but I don't want background checks to dig up my GMAT score and have a whole debacle ensue if admitted.

rwx5861, they have no way of uncovering that information via a background check. Background checks are for your work experience, civic record and other verifiable biographical facts.
