The total cost to charter a bus was shared equally by the people who [#permalink]
Bunuel wrote:
The total cost to charter a bus was shared equally by the people who went on a certain trip. If the total cost to charter the bus was $360, how many people went on the trip?

(1) Each person who went on the trip paid $9 to charter the bus.
(2) If 4 fewer people had gone on the trip, each person's share of the total cost to charter the bus would have increased by $1.

DS20420

Total no. of people who went on a trip: x.
The total cost to charter the bus = $360

Statement 1: Each person who went on the trip paid $9 to charter the bus.
Total cost = 360$.
Cost per person: 9$.
=> x = 360/9.
=> x = 40 people.
So Sufficient.

Statement 2: If 4 fewer people had gone on the trip, each person's share of the total cost to charter the bus would have increased by $1.
=>360/(x - 4) = (360/x) + 1
=> x^2 - 4x - 1440 = 0.
on solving we get:
=> x^2 - 40x + 36x - 1440 = 0
=> x(x-40)+36(x-40) = 0
=> x = 40, -36

Since the no. of people cannot be -ve, we get the total no. of people who had gone to the trip. Thus the statement is:
Sufficient.

Let the total no. Of passengers be P
And cost per head is C
Therefore,
Total cost/No. of Passengers= cost per head.

Statement 1:
Total cost =360
360/P=9
360/9 = 40
Total 40 passengers went on the trip. (Sufficient)

Statement 2:
360/P-4 = C+1
We need either of the P and C to determine other.
(Insufficient)

Hi yashikaaggarwal,
wouldn't C = 360/P,
then we would have a value for P.

thanks.

Yeah I saw that. But don't know whether correcting it will legit or not. So didn't correct it.
I think I should.

Let number of people be N, share of each = X. total cost = 360 = NX

Now analyze the statements:
I: X = 9 ; We know NX = 360 Hence we can find number of people. SUFFICIENT

II: If # of people = N-4 then share = X+1
We know that total cost is still the same i.e 360 ==> (N-4)*(X+1) = 360

Opening the brackets: NX - 4X +N - 4 = 360

NX =360, given in question ==> 360 -4X + N -4 = 360
=> -4x + N -4 =0; putting N= 360/X

We get: -4X + 360/X - 4 =0

Linear equation in one variable, upon solving we get X = 9, We can get N

Sufficient

(1) \(9n = 360\)

\(n = 40\)

SUFFICIENT.

(2) \((n-4)(c+1) = 360\)

\(nc + n - 4c - 4 = 360\)

\(nc + n - 4c - 4 = 360\)

\(n - 4c - 4 = 0\)

\(n^2 - 4cn - 4n = 0\)

\(n^2 - 1440 - 4n\)

\((n-40)(n+36)\)

\(n = 40\)

SUFFICIENT.
