Any official question you can show for context?

He was less successful after he had signed with the Washington Bullets compared to the New York Knicks, small forward Bernard King nevertheless earned a steadfast group of admirers who consider him one of the greatest scorers in basketball history.

(A) He was less successful after he had signed with the Washington Bullets compared to
(B) Being less successful after he had signed with the Washington Bullets as compared to
(C) Less successful after he signed with the Washington Bullets than he had been with
(D) Although he was less successful after signing with the Washington Bullets compared to
(E) He had been less successful after signing with the Washington Bullets than with

The answer is C
I understand that D can be eliminated due to an idiomatic error (less-than) , however, can I also eliminate it on the grounds of both 'although' and 'nevertheless' making the sentence redundant?

That one is from Veritas: https://gmatclub.com/forum/he-was-less- ... 44581.html

Similar Official Guide question is here: https://gmatclub.com/forum/she-was-less ... 40335.html

Hope it helps.

D has multiple problems

One major problem in D is the usage of 'compared to'

The phrase is 'compared to the New York Knicks'.
Is anything being compared to the New York Knicks? No (and immediate elimination)

Now to your question: Can we eliminate D on the grounds that we don't need both 'although' and 'nevertheless'?
Yes, 'nevertheless'is redundant. That's probably reason enough to eliminate the answer choice.

It's not a decision point in the question. Using 'Although'(used for showing contrast) and 'nevertheless' as decision would be like walking on the edge. Redundancy is used as a reason to eliminate a choice but there must be bigger issues with the choice.
