but they haven't mentioned that x and y are distinct integers... that's why I chose E. In many questions I have seen in the past, the absence of the word 'distinct' is usually taken quite strictly (and if I am not wrong, those questions use 'x' and 'y' too). Can someone please explain to me why we overlooked the possibility that x and y are 1 integer. Thanks

If x and y are integers, what is the value of x+y?

(1) 690 < x < y < 696
Five possible values {691,692,693,694, 695} and only two variable x and y
Many combinations of these values for x and y are possible
INSUFFICIENT

(2) 692 < x < y< 695
Two possible values 693,694
additionally y has to be the bigger than x since y>x (this condition also makes sure that x and y are unique)
so y=694 and x =693
SUFFICIENT

ANSWER IS B

In the question it is mentioned that 692<x<y<695
x<y it is only possible when they are distinct
if they are not distinct it cannot be x<y it would be x=y.

B

(1) NOT SUFFICIENT

We know values cannot be 690 and 696, but that leaves 691-695 as choices for values of x and y

(2) SUFFICIENT

692 and 695 are eliminated as options, leaving us with 693 and 694. We know x < y, so 693 +694 = 1387

If x and y are integers, what is the value of x+y?

(1) 690 < x < y < 696
x can be 691, 693, or 694.
y can be 692, 693, 694, or 695.
Clearly insufficient.

(2) 692 < x < y< 695
x can only be 693 and y can only be 694.
Sufficient.

Target question: What is the value of x+y?

Statement 1: 690 < x < y < 696
This inequality allows for several different pairs of values for x and y.
Consider these two possible cases:
Case a: x = 691 and y = 692. In this case, the answer to the target question is x + y = 691 + 692 = 1383
Case b: x = 691 and y = 693. In this case, the answer to the target question is x + y = 691 + 693 = 1384
Since we can’t answer the target question with certainty, statement 1 is NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: 692 < x < y< 695
Since x and y are INTEGERS, the only values that satisfy the inequality are x = 693 and y = 694, which means the target question is x + y = 693 + 694 = 1387
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 2 is SUFFICIENT

Answer: B

x and y are integers, we need to find the value of x+y

From statement I alone, 690 < x< y < 696.
x = 691 and y = 692 is a possible set of values in the range; x + y = 1383
x = 692 and y = 693 is another possible set of values in the range; x + y = 1385

Statement I alone is insufficient. Answer options A and D can be eliminated.

From statement II alone, 692 < x < y < 695.
The only set of values that satisfy this range is x = 693 and y = 694 and hence x + y = 1387

Statement II alone is sufficient. Answer options C and E can be eliminated.
The correct answer option is B.

Hope that helps!

Statement 2 : 692 < x < y < 695.
The only set of values that satisfy either range is (x = 693) and (y = 694), or vice a versa
hence x + y = 1387
Correct Option B
