My answer is (C). It took me 01:37.

I am pretty sure that (B) is meant to be: both on the enforcement of regulations and on recreational activities. Otherwise, (B) is too easy to rule out.

(A) In "both X and Y", it is critical to maintain the parallelism between X and Y. In this option, "the enforcement of regulations " and "recreational activities being available" are not strictly parallel. In addition, if we can remove "being" in "being available" and still maintain the same meaning, we should get rid of "being" for the sake of efficiency.

(B) As written, it is super easy to rule out as it lacks "and" to pair with "both". By adding the missing "and", however, we have:
... both on the enforcement of regulations and on recreational activities...
This version is much better, but in comparison with option (C), we determine that (C) has better parallelism and clearer meaning.

(D) "Enforcement of recreational activities" does not make sense.

(E) We need "both ... and" as opposed to "both ... in combination with".

The structure is - The survival of X depends on both A and B apart from fishing.

(A) on both the enforcement of regulations and recreational activities being available Incorrect. Use of passive is not correct.

(B) both on the enforcement of regulations on recreational activities - Incorrect. Changes the meaning by saying Both on A on B

(C) on both the enforcement of regulations and the availability of recreational activities - Correct. Goes with the structure discussed

(D) on the enforcement of both regulations and recreational activities - Incorrect. Change in meaning. Now the sentence mean the survival depends on enforcement of regulations and recreational activities and not on availability of recreational activities

(E) on both the enforcement of regulations in combination with available recreational activities - Incorrect. We don't need in combination with when we can simply do this by using and

(A) on both the enforcement of regulations and recreational activities being available -> "enforcement of regulations" and "recreational activities being available" are not Parallelism.

(B) both on the enforcement of regulations on recreational activities -> "regulations on recreational activities" is changing meaning of the sentence. Incorrect.

(C) on both the enforcement of regulations and the availability of recreational activities -> Parallelism error is corrected and no new error is introduced. Let's keep it.

(D) on the enforcement of both regulations and recreational activities -> "both regulations and recreational " is not parallel. Incorrect.

(E) on both the enforcement of regulations in combination with available recreational activities -> "in combination with available.." incorrect.

So, I think C. :)

Error Analysis:- Original sentence has parallelism issue. Plus, Usage of being seems to be wrong.

(A) on both the enforcement of regulations and recreational activities being available
Incorrect. As explained above.

(B) both on the enforcement of regulations on recreational activities
Incorrect. With "both" we need to have two elements linked. Plus, it is also changing the intended meaning.

(C) on both the enforcement of regulations and the availability of recreational activities
Correct.

(D) on the enforcement of both regulations and recreational activities
Incorrect. Changes the intended meaning. We can't enforce recreational activities rather their availability

(E) on both the enforcement of regulations in combination with available recreational activities
Incorrect. "both" and "in combination with" is redundant.

ramlala - Answer choice D is clearly incorrect because it conveys a nonsensical meaning. Please note that the sentence is grammatically correct, but it has a meaning issue. The survival depends on two things: enforcement of regulations and two availability of recreational activities. Answer choice D conveys a nonsensical meaning that survival depends on two things: enforcement of regulations and enforcement of recreational activities. Enforce recreational activities? Nah!

(A) on both the enforcement of regulations and recreational activities being available
not parallel. "enforcement of regulations" is noun phrase but "recreational activities being available" is a clause.

(B) both on the enforcement of regulations on recreational activities
wrong idiom that it has "both" without "and"

(C) on both the enforcement of regulations and the availability of recreational activities
correct. noun phrases are connected by "and".

(D) on the enforcement of both regulations and recreational activities
strange meaning. recreational activities is "enforced". drop

(E) on both the enforcement of regulations in combination with available recreational activities
very clumsy delivery with "in combination with". C is better

This is a question where we look for parallelism Both X and Y where X and Y should be structurally and logically parallel.

Quote:
(A) on both the enforcement of regulations and recreational activities being available

Both the X and Y
X:- The enforcement of regulations
Y:-Recreational activities
Incorrect Parallelism.Eliminate

Quote:
(B) both on the enforcement of regulations on recreational activities

Both the X and Y
X:- On the enforcement of regulations
Y:-Recreational activities
Incorrect Parallelism.
Also, here we have meaning issue. One is saying enforcement of regulations so other should be also somewhat like this.
Eliminate

Quote:
(C) on both the enforcement of regulations and the availability of recreational activities

This is correct . X and Y are structurally and logically parallel.

Quote:
(D) on the enforcement of both regulations and recreational activities

Both X and Y. Here X and Y are parallel but the meaning is changed. The sentence is not saying "enforcement of recreational activities".
Option C on the other hand clearly mentions "enforcement of regulations" and "availability of recreational activities". Option C is better choice.
Structurally parallel :-
Logically parallel:- :death:
Eliminate

Quote:
(E) on both the enforcement of regulations in combination with available recreational activities

Structure is both X and Y. Not both in combination with. Eliminate

(D) on the enforcement of both regulations and recreational activities - the sentence is incorrect because parallelism error

(E) on both the enforcement of regulations in combination with available recreational activities - incorrect usage of in combination with

Solution - This seems to be a classic case of Parallelism error between 'enforcement of regulations and recreational activities being available'. enforcement' is a noun whereas 'recreational' is an adjective.

(A) on both the enforcement of regulations and recreational activities being available
Option A is incorrect due to parallelism error.

(B) both on the enforcement of regulations on recreational activities
'both on the' incorrect usage. Correct usage should be 'on both the ... of X and Y' Drop Option B.

(C) on both the enforcement of regulations and the availability of recreational activities
Correct idiom is used both X and Y. Parallelism in correct, nouns used in both cases/parts. Option C is correct.

(D) on the enforcement of both regulations and recreational activities
Trap Option. The enforcement of recreational activities does not make sense here.
The whole sentence could be incorrectly read is the following way - The survival of many endangered species of fish in our rivers depends on both the ... being available apart from fishing.
Here, one might think 'on both and being available' are supposed to be together and this has been modified in Option D as 'on the enforcement of both' instead of 'on both the enforcement of'. However, this is not the case.
Drop Option D.

(E) on both the enforcement of regulations in combination with available recreational activities
Idiomatic error. Correct idiom is both X and Y. Drop Option E.

There is issue with parallelism here. The correct idiom is : Both X and Y. , X and Y should follow parallel structure.

Bunuel wrote:

(A) on both the enforcement of regulations and recreational activities being available

---the enforcement of regulations, recreational activities being available not parallel

(B) both on the enforcement of regulations on recreational activities

--- Idiomatic problem: 'and' is missing.

(C) on both the enforcement of regulations and the availability of recreational activities

--- Idiom is in correct place. Both the items in list are also parallel.

(D) on the enforcement of both regulations and recreational activities

--- Although idiom is used correctly here, the meaning seems distorted as recreational activities are paired with 'enforced', which we cannot determine is correct .

(E) on both the enforcement of regulations in combination with available recreational activities

---(Both - and ) is the correct idiomatic usage. Here (Both - in combination with ) is used.

(B) both on the enforcement of regulations on recreational activities

(C) on both the enforcement of regulations and the availability of recreational activities

(D) on the enforcement of both regulations and recreational activities

(E) on both the enforcement of regulations in combination with available recreational activities

Official Explanation:

Answer – C

Whenever you see ‘both’ in a sentence check for two things—the placement of both and parallelism between the two things being referred to by both, that is, enforcement and availability.

In A, the two things implied by ‘both’—the enforcement and recreational activities—are not parallel. The use of being is also best avoided. B is incorrect because there are no two things coming after both. In D, the placement of both is incorrect as it suggests that there is an enforcement of two things happening in the sentence. In E, the correct idiom is both X and Y and not both X in combination with Y. Also available recreational activities is different from availability of recreational activities. C is the correct answer as it makes enforcement parallel to availability
