While it is true that genomics techniques are proving to be the most [#permalink]
A) While it is true that genomics techniques are proving to be the most powerful tools in science since the advent of quantum mechanics began, this entire field of enquiry has also forced -- "advent" and "began" together is major redundancy. Eliminate.

B) It is true that genomics techniques are proving to be the most powerful tools in science from the advent of quantum mechanics, this entire field of enquiry also forcing -- "from" is incorrect preposition here.

C) Since the advent of quantum mechanics, it is true that genomics techniques are proving to be the most powerful tools in science, with this entire field of enquiry also forcing -- "with" is not the correct preposition here. Also the passive voice with the use of expletive "it" is quite wordy. It just doesn't make sense. Eliminate.

D) It is true that genomics techniques have proved to be the most powerful tools in science since the advent of quantum mechanics began, and that this entire field of enquiry is also forcing -- same as A. "advent" and "began" together.

E) Although it is true that genomics techniques have proven to be the most powerful tools in science since the advent of quantum mechanics, this entire field of enquiry has also forced -- Correct choice. No errors.

E) Although it is true that genomics techniques have proven to be the most powerful tools in science since the advent of quantum mechanics, this entire field of enquiry has also forced

since the advent is the correct word here so B is wrong

also forcing seems to be the incorrect word here

C,D - incorrect [proving, have proved]

between A/E

are proving vs have proven to be

the latter sounds more coherent

(E) imo

This is a tough question, especially between option (B), (C) and (E). I ended up choosing (B) after spending 02:55.

Firstly, we can eliminate (A) and (D) because "since the advent of quantum mechanics began" is either redundant or nonsensical. It is all right to say
"since the advent of quantum mechanics" or "since quantum mechanics began" but not "since the advent of quantum mechanics began".

Next, I feel that (C) changes the intended meaning by moving "Since the advent of quantum mechanics" to the very beginning of the sentence. Now, "Since the advent of quantum mechanics" modifies "it is true". The differences may be subtle but exist nevertheless.

Finally, both (B) and (E) are grammatically sound. Sentence structure of (E), Subordinate clause + Main clause, is much more common than that of (B), Main clause + absolute construction.
But (E) introduces a contrast between "being the most powerful tools" and "forcing some rather pointed and profound questions about humanity as a species". We have to wonder if such contrast exists. Do we see any contrast between the two functions?
Ultimately, we have to make the judgement call whether "forcing some rather pointed and profound questions about humanity as a species" is a positive thing? If Yes, "although" is unjustified. (Everyone should agree that "being the most powerful tools" is positive.)

Because I actually welcome the opportunity to answer "rather pointed and profound questions about humanity as a species", I eliminated (E).

Hi zhanbo
In B, is ther verb missing in second clause?

B) It is true that genomics techniques are proving to be the most powerful tools in science from the advent of quantum mechanics, this entire field of enquiry (Subject) also forcing (Not verb)

B) It is true that genomics techniques are proving to be the most powerful tools in science from the advent of quantum mechanics, this entire field of enquiry (Subject) also forcing (Not verb)

(B) contains one main clause + Absolute construction, also called Absolute phrase. (Read more at https://www.quora.com/What-is-absolute- ... in-grammar)

If we only change Present Participle "forcing" into a verb such as "forces", the modified version turns out to be grammatically incorrect because of the comma splice error.

Comma splice can be fixed in various ways: We can add a coordinating conjunctions (such as BUT if there is a contrast, or And if there is no contrast); we can change comma to be semicolon; we can change one independent clause into subordinate clause, as option (E), which seems to be the right answer, does.

While it is true that genomics techniques are proving to be the most powerful tools in science since the advent of quantum mechanics began, this entire field of enquiry has also forced some rather pointed and profound questions about humanity as a species.

In A, B and C, it seems that techniques themselves are trying to be most powerful tool
Option D lacks the contrast.
Choice E is the winner.

Why is D wrong ? Also how do we find out when to use contrast in a sentence ? In this sentence , the two IC's can both be true at the same time .
