Hi,

Do you have any work experience? Are you applying as a pure undergraduate candidate? Your GMAT is solid, but what is the breakdown between the quant and verbal sub-scores? Besides cricket and teaching, what other extracurricular activities can you display? Those will be critically important.

In all honesty, you are probably not a viable candidate for the top, top programs in Europe but may have a shot at some of the lower level schools.

Please reach out to us at Admissionado for a free consultation so we can more appropriately review your background, help assess your chances at one of these top programs, and walk you through our application support services.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I should be more specific this time around that I'm employed as a teacher of accounts for a school from the last 6 years and my scores breakdown for the gmat is (Q50 V 37). Also, I've lead new teachers by mentoring them and shaping them to be more creative in classrooms and other nonprofit leadership positions.

That is helpful. That definitely makes things easier on your application. The top programs will still be a stretch but 10 - 20 seems attainable. Give it a go!

Thanks for the reply again. I would also like to add that I've been onto various debating forums and did part time social work in an ngo as well. What else should I do on my profile to atleast increase my chances in the top 10 bschools from Europe?

Hello,
I'm aiming for the top 20 European b schools and I've a score of 720 in the Gmat exam. I've done my 10th with 64.4 percent. 12th with 64.6 percentage and undergrauation with 48.6 percentage in commerce and did by masters in commerce with 57 percent. I had been into sports that's mainly cricket at school level and I've a profesional teaching experience of 6 years at school level other than that I've learned German language (B2 level). Did other courses from mbamaths of statistics and economics as well to demonstrate my maths skill further and I've been posting blogs on economy and business for sometime now. My concerns are my age and my undergraduation marks which is on the lower side when there's a vast variety of other Indian applicants who have much higher than that. I need a piece of advice that am I gonna be someone who would stand a chance in top 20 bschools from Europe? I'd really appreciate a reply back. Thanks in advance.

Hey aamna,

To begin with, I would like to relieve you of your grade-related worry and let you know that your chances of acceptance into any schools worldwide is based on a holistic profile and not your grades alone. While yes, your performance in your bachelors and masters is on the lower end, to remedy this, you would need to pose the right alibi and divert attention towards other aspects of your profile such as your extracurriculars, projects, internships, and your GMAT score. Moreover, considering you are applying for an MBA program, it won’t be much of a deal-breaker as the focus of an MBA program is primarily on the quality of the work experience.

As for your GMAT score, 720 is really competitive as it allows you to target most of the top B-schools and also goes on to vouch for your academic prowess, thus overshadowing your previous academic performances.

When it comes to your work experience, your teaching experience of 6 years is pretty unique and can work in your favor as schools are very particular about breeding diversity in their cohort. Now considering the fact that you will be competing against applicants who have worked in the big four companies like KPMG, EY, DELOITTE, and PWC, you can set yourself at par with them by talking about why you chose to teach, what were your inputs and what skills you developed along the journey.

Moving on, extracurricular activities are a way to showcase your proactive attitude and how you have emulated the theoretical knowledge you gained in classes and created a positive impact by utilizing them in real-life situations. That said, a major factor missing in your profile here is the lack of extracurricular activities that align with your interest in getting into an MBA program. To remedy this problem, you should definitely look into pursuing a certification or course related to management. You can also take up some CSR activities as it would highlight your capability to utilize your skills for the betterment of society and make a positive impact, traits that every b-school is on the lookout for.

Looking at your profile, here are some schools in the dream, competitive, and safe category that you can be looking at:

Dream: INSEAD, HEC
Competitive: ESSEC, ESCP, FSFM
Safe: EDHEC, Skema, Grenoble

For dream schools your chances of acceptance are 40-50% whereas for competitive and safe schools your chances of acceptance are 70% and 90% respectively.

All said and done, another important aspect you need to focus on is to complement your profile with an equally strong application. An application through its various components such as essays, LORs and SOPs would help you to highlight your strengths and give apt justifications for your weaknesses to smooth over any flaws in your profile. Moreover, the application acts as the window through which the admission committee can peer into your skills, calibre and your personality.

Therefore, in lieu of this, I would recommend you to check out our flagship ALL-IN-ONE service, which has helped 3500+ applicants to get into their dream schools. As you are still in the early process of your application, it would provide you with end-to-end consulting and unlimited edits on your application documents. Not only that, you’d be connected with B-school alumni who’d be helping you directly with your application process!

Re: Profile evaluation for MBA [#permalink]
Hi, wondering if I could get some insights on my profile below:

Nationality: Indonesian
Gender: Male
Age: 26
Undergraduate: 3.8 GPA in Mech Eng from top 3 Indonesian university
Extracurriculars: Board of Advisor at a non-profit in the past 2 years, was also in leadership position in the same organization in Uni
GMAT:
- 680 (Q49/V34/IR8/AWA6) second try
- 670 (Q47/V34/IR6/AWA6) first try

Professional Experience (5 years total upon intake)
- (2018 - present) 3 years in equity sales trading at a bulge bracket IB. Joined through Graduate scheme, promoted to Associate Director in 2021. Location: Indonesia
- (2017-2018) 1 year project manager in wealth management division of global commercial bank. Location: Indonesia

Additional certifications: Passed CFA Level 1 - June 2019

Post MBA goals:
- Pivot to Investment Banking Division, focusing on infrastructure, or
- MBB

Target schools, in this order:
- Booth
- Columbia
- LBS
- HEC
- Oxford

I know Booth and Columbia might be a stretch due to my GMAT score. But given my profile above, would LBS, HEC, Oxford be a safer bet with 680 GMAT?

Thanks in advance for your time.

Hi Admissionado,

Nationality: Korean, 31
Gender: Male
Undergraduate degree: Top Korean School, Statistics / Financial Enginnering (Minor)
GPA: 3.4/4.0 (Upward trend in final two years)
GMAT score: 700 (Q50 V35 IR8)

Work experience
- 2 years of military experience (translator, did some translation of military books and some leadership roles)
- 5 years, Strategy and Sales for the biggest Semiconductor company in Korea. Right now, my role is mostly sales, production control and management.

Extracurriculars:
- Low handicap golfer, some extracurricular activities while in college (programming club), not much after I started working. I do need to improve in this area.

Future goals:
I want to specialize in the tech sector, but in a different type of role.
- BB analyst in the Tech Sector / Strategy consultant at MBB / Venture capital jobs in preferably in Asia

Target schools
Stretch: Wharton
Target: Booth, Kellogg, Columbia, MIT, Haas, Fuqua

My biggest concern is that my GMAT score /GPA is not at the top of the range, and that I also finished taking all five GMAT exams. The next time I can take it on a 12month rolling basis is this December, which will be only applicable for R2 for this year's applications. Given my GPA & work experience, do you suggest retaking the exam if I target mostly M7s?
I actually got 700 on my first exam, so I believe I could aim for a score of 700~730. (I wasted the next four exams without giving enough preparation. Work was crushing me at the beginning of the year, and I did not know that the limit was up to 5 exams)

Do you also have any suggestions regarding extracurricular activities?

Thank you for sharing all of this background information in an organized fashion.

That list of schools looks very appropriate. You should have a good shot at most of these days with your significant experience at a blue chip company, extracurricular involvement and overall academic credentials. Still, Duke (Fuqua) may be a slight reach. For the U.S., have you also considered Georgetown (McDonough), USC (Marshall), Michigan (Ross), UCLA (Anderson) and Emory (Goizueta)? You have your bases covered in Europe.

I know you didn't ask this, but have you reconsidered retaking the GMAT? I am glad you have a 700 but a 720+ for an older Indian candidate would go a long way. If you are looking at a 2022 intake, I believe you will have ample time over the next several months.

Please reach back out for help. If you'd like both strategy and content support for your application materials, schedule a free consultation with us. We would be happy to give you a more in-depth review of your background and walk you through our consulting services.
