IMO correct option is (C)

In option (B) and (D).... they are forever racing along is an Independent clause, but since the question stem ends with a comma, we need a semicolon(;) to avoid comma splice error. Hence one can easily eliminate these two options.

Between (A), (C) and (E), option (C) is perfectly parallel.

My answer is (C). It took me 59 seconds.

(A) In a list "X, Y, and Z" or "X, Y, or Z", the conjunction "and" or "or" cannot be omitted.
(B) Comma splice.
(C) The issue in (A), the missing "and", is fixed.
(D) Comma splice.
(E) Lack of parallelism between "racing ... firing off" and "confront".

Quote:
In many popular works of fiction, American detectives are portrayed as far too energetic in their pursuit of the killer, forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds, firing off guns erratically, in periods of less physical exertion, confronting their emotional neuroses.

Quote:
A) forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds, firing off guns erratically, in periods of less physical exertion, confronting their emotional neuroses.

There need to be a and before the last element in the list i.e confronting....Eliminate

Quote:
B) they are forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds, firing off guns erratically and, in periods of less physical exertion, confronting their emotional neuroses.
C) forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds, firing off guns erratically and, in periods of less physical exertion, confronting their emotional neuroses.

The only difference in between option B and C is the use of they in option B and that somehow is creating a run-on sentence. There should have been a semicolon before they to join two independent clauses.
Option C is correctly using forever racing blah blah blah....as it highlights the additional information

Quote:
D) they are forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds, they fire off guns erratically and, in periods of less physical exertion, they confront their emotional neuroses.

This is same as option B . Usage of they is creating a run-on sentence.

Quote:
E) forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds and firing off guns erratically and, in periods of less physical exertion, they confront their emotional neuroses.

the they at last breaks the parallelism and therefore is incorrect

IMO C

In many popular works of fiction, American detectives are portrayed as far too energetic in their pursuit of the killer, forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds, firing off guns erratically, in periods of less physical exertion, confronting their emotional neuroses.

3:2 split- Eliminate B and D since they do not modify detectives
Skeleton of the sentence : X, Y and Z

A) forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds, firing off guns erratically, in periods of less physical exertion, confronting their emotional neuroses.

D) they are forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds, they fire off guns erratically and, in periods of less physical exertion, they confront their emotional neuroses.

E) forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds and firing off guns erratically and, in periods of less physical exertion, they confront their emotional neuroses.

In many popular works of fiction, American detectives are portrayed as far too energetic in their pursuit of the killer, forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds, firing off guns erratically, in periods of less physical exertion, confronting their emotional neuroses.

A) forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds, firing off guns erratically, in periods of less physical exertion, confronting their emotional neuroses. -> We don't have "and" in the option. Incorrect.

B) they are forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds, firing off guns erratically and, in periods of less physical exertion, confronting their emotional neuroses. -> IC + Conjunction + IC is a correct form. Incorrect.

C) forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds, firing off guns erratically and, in periods of less physical exertion, confronting their emotional neuroses. -> We have parallelism in place, racing, firing and confronting. Let's keep it.

D) they are forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds, they fire off guns erratically and, in periods of less physical exertion, they confront their emotional neuroses. -> Same As B.

E) forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds and firing off guns erratically and, in periods of less physical exertion, they confront their emotional neuroses. -> Parallelism error as racing, firing and confront are not parallel.

So, I think C. :)

This sentence is checking parallelism understanding. There are three lists which should be connected using comma + and.

A) forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds, firing off guns erratically, in periods of less physical exertion, confronting their emotional neuroses. - Lists are not connected using any connector (and), hence incorrect.

B) they are forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds, firing off guns erratically and, in periods of less physical exertion, confronting their emotional neuroses.- parallelism issue has been resolved, but introduction of "they are" has made this sentence an Independent clause which is connected with first Independent clause using comma. Hence incorrect.

C) forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds, firing off guns erratically and, in periods of less physical exertion, confronting their emotional neuroses. - Correct

D) they are forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds, they fire off guns erratically and, in periods of less physical exertion, they confront their emotional neuroses. - list is not parallel and Independent clause is connected using only comma. Hence incorrect
E) forever racing along those mean streets at high speeds and firing off guns erratically and, in periods of less physical exertion, they confront their emotional neuroses. - list is not parallel.

Re: In many popular works of fiction American detectives are portrayed as [#permalink]
The OA has to be C as it is the only option that is parallel and correctly modifying "detectives".

Option A is out as it is not parallel due to the absence of the word 'and'.

Option B is out as it doesn't modify "detectives".

Option D and E are out as they are not parallel.

The OA is C.
