Hi
doitmate,
You are older than the usual applicants with a huge 13 years of experience for a full-time MBA. I think being an older applicant, you possess both pros and cons of it and it depends on you how you capitalize on it. It will be difficult for you to convince the adcoms for wanting to do a career switch now at this point and not capitalizing on your 13 years of experience. I would rather suggest you connect this vision of yours with your prior career. About convincing the adcoms, Try to answer questions like why not go for EMBA after three-four years (if you see growth in your industry and role)? What are the viable options if you do an MBA now or if you do EMBA after a few years? Also, for older applicants, there is an issue of placing them, so generally, adcoms expect older applicants to use their own network to get placed. Therefore, a career switch after 13 years may not be the most viable option for you. So, try to analyze all the options.
On the work front, you have a pretty good 13 years of work experience and, as you have worked in 6 countries, you have a great international exposure (which INSEAD greatly stresses) that you can highlight in your apps. So, on the surface, your work-experience looks pretty solid. But I don't have a lot of details here to properly evaluate this aspect and need to know more about your impact and goals in order to find your USPs. I can see a fast career trajectory here, you need to talk about some of the star projects that you may have worked on. Talk more deeply about your experiences and show how your different roles have developed leadership qualities in you and how you took care of things when things went south. Talking about such experiences helps give adcoms great insight into your values, beliefs, and leadership potential and styles.
I'm missing the details of your ECs (apart from volunteering), do you pursue any hobbies? ECs play a very important role in your apps, revealing your diverse personality, and adcoms get to know the different aspects of your personality.
Your motivation for an MBA is fair, but you will need to explain your decision to make a career change. Make sure you explain your post-MBA goals thoroughly and make adcoms aware of your ambitions. Also, to give you some context, we have a hundred per cent conversion rate for people from oil&gas to Europe schools. You may want to read one of the
successful essays to INSEAD. It will help you give a good idea about your chances and will instil “right” confidence in you
Overall, you've got a solid profile and a 725+ GMAT score seems fair and if you get it, it will anyways make your job easier. For 1yr full-time MBA INSEAD, HEC, and IMD would be a great choice for you as they accept candidates with a huge work experience. What's going to matter most about your application is how you link experiential dots and make a great narrative to put a mark on adcoms.
If you’d like we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length, answer any of your concerns and your further chances to b-school. Feel free to
book a free session with us as per your convenience.
Cheers!
