Eliminate B and D because modern graphic novels and Lynd Ward’s books have different styles, which is mentioned in the non underlined part of the prompt.

Eliminate C because the idea is to compare the books, not the authors.

Eliminate E because the elements of comparison are the books.

A remains and is the correct answer.

My answer is (A). It took me 35 seconds.

(A) Correctly and logically compare "modern graphic novels" with "Lynd Ward’s books ".
(B) Eliminated because of logical flaw: Lynd Ward’s books are not like modern graphic novels.
(C) Cannot compare "authors" with "books".
(D) "that of" is unclear and probably unnecessary. Note: In order to be superficially compatible with "Lynd Ward’s books", "those of" is needed.
(E) "in novels" cannot be compared with "books".

Unlike modern graphic novels, which make liberal use of text and dialogues to convey emotions and feelings, Lynd Ward’s books do not include any dialogue or narrative text.

A) Unlike modern graphic novels, -> Intended meaning is correct and we are comparing novels to books. It makes sense. Let's keep it.

B) Like modern graphic novels, -> Incorrect meaning.

C) Unlike the authors of modern graphic novels, -> "of modern graphic novels" is prepositional phrase and we are comparing authors and books. It is incorrect.

D) Like that of graphic novels, -> "that of" is incorrect.

E) Unlike in modern graphic novels, -> In novels is compared with books. It is incorrect.

So, I think A. :)
