A certain brand of pest repellent has been shown by several [#permalink]
For D to be the answer something in the argument has to link the pest repellant with effectiveness against other pests....

Nor can we make that assumption since these are not assumption family questions...this is an inference family question...

Some opinions please...

Unless somebody changes my opinion i am not taking D as the answer

I marked option E, and this option is wrong. In spite of inefficacy, one certain brand is popular in the Atlanta region because it has some good effects. As per option E, when combined with stronger pest repellent, this brand works best, so I marked it.
The reason I didn't choose option D because as per this option Aphids are not the only harmful pests. Okay, there may be other harmful pests also, and that is the only thing we know. Aphid can be effective for this pests or not.

Can someone please explain where did I go wrong, and is this an inference type question?

I was confused between D and E and chose D which was right.
My reasoning was that since the brand was unable to do away with aphid it would have been purchased for another breed of pests.
I strongly support the option E as well since it gives us a notion why the brand was purchased but again for the aphid the stronger repellant could have been enough.
It's hard to decide which one is more reasonable. Let me know your thoughts

This is not an Inference question. This is a Conclusion question, and the correct answer will be a conclusion that is supported by what the passage says.

The issue with (E) is that it's a very specific conclusion. Do we really have any clear reason to believe the specific conclusion that combining this repellent with another one works? Where does the passage give us any such idea?

Honestly, (D) is not an ideal conclusion either, but it is a reasonable conclusion. If people are buying a pest repellent even though it does not repel aphids, then it makes at least some sense to conclude that the repellent must repel something else.

Agree D is not a clear answer. In fact, I’d argue E is the better answer, only because at least it mentions the use of the pesticide given. D, wants us to make a big assumption that the other forms of pests are being treated by the pesticide mentioned. It may well not. If E didn’t existed D would be the right answer. But, here D looks more like a shot in the dark than, E does.

One of the most trickiest questions good one , there is every chance that we chose if correct can be a reason for the pest repellant being prevalent , we have to chose that doesn't have out of the argument assumption for example we don't know what's the markrtting campaign , we are not givem what how the aplhins live whether they have any outside knowledge or not , we don't it's effectiveness when used with other repeallant why not just use that repellant if that's strong and also we have no idea what has happened miraculously decimation of the pests population taking all this into account the only other alternative that might have lead to the increase could be that the pest might have carried out it's most basic cause of repelling pest of some other da/maging pest hence IMO D
