Through networking in church(of all places), I got to befriend the spouse of a trustee from a reputed B school. what can he do for my application :-D ? I haven't applied to B school but I have indicated to my friend that I will be next year.

i have yet to meet the trustee, I am invited by his spouse to a coming Xmas party.

bump!
any recommendations? if i build a relationship with this guy, could he go as far as to write a rec for me? That doesn't seem doable because he hsan't observed me in a work setting. Looking for ideas here :?

He may not have observed you in a work setting, however he could observe you in a volunteer setting for your church activities and the leadership you show there.

I wouldn't get a rec letter from him unless you work together in some kind of proper setting.

Here's what I would do. Don't mention that you're going to apply. Just be buddy buddy with him and his wife. Ask a lot of questions and seem really interested. Then when you apply ask him if he could call someone at the school to put your application in the "front".

Personally I dont think that alumni letters of recommendation count that much, unless they are from alumni who are active/important contributors to the school. Everyone knows that the least important part of the application are LOR. The adcom might just read them to make sure that there isnt something negative about you, but other than that they know that everybody makes sure that their LOR are excellent. I wouldnt even bother getting closer to that guy, just for the sake of getting a LOR, which most likely wont have an impact in their decisions.

If he is on the board - I would use him.

If he just an alum I might not, but then again every little bit counts. Just dont have he be the only person vouching for you - use him in addition to 2 other work related rec's.

Regardless of popular opinion, it will help you.
