Hi hasanjaved,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Based on the information you have shared, here are my two cents.

Academics: Your undergrad GPA is good, and with a strong GMAT score, you are defining your intellectual ability to tackle the extensive MBA curriculum. So this part is pretty sorted for you.

Work experience: Sounds good with some great international experience. Rotman highly values ‘Impact’, so you must be able to communicate your work experience right and strong. You can also highlight how these foreign experiences have impacted you, this will strengthen your application (because this is your strength, and you must be able to bring it outright in your apps).

ECs: Your ECs are missing. ECs play an important role in your apps, revealing your diverse personality and enabling adcoms to learn about the different aspects of your personality. Think of something you like doing and talk about it to make the applications more interesting because that is what will set you apart.

If you need any direction/guidance over any aspect of your application and have any specific concerns, you can ask us on the forum Ask MBA & Beyond.

Overall you have a good profile and had a shot at Rotman. If you are open to suggestions, you can also target Booth and other US schools. As you are applying for the fall 2022 intake, I would advise you to focus on building a solid profile (ECs, work profile, etc.) with some interesting and impactful experiences. You can also look for other Top Mba programs in Canada to know about top-notch MBA programs.

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and your further chances to b-schools. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Let’s maximize your chances in Round 1 for fall intake

Cheers!

Would love to hear thoughts on my profile

- Undergrad from the top b-school in the country - BSc (Accounting & Finance) - 3.72/4.0 CGPA
- CFA - cleared all 3 levels with >90percentile score in consecutive attempts
- 1.5 years of work experience at Unilever Finance
- 1.5 year (till date) work experience at a tech startup with great international exposure across East Africa, South Asia and Middle East. Looking to apply for the Fall 2022 intake (depending on the COVID situation, I wouldnt prefer online classes) so I'd have a 4-year work experience by then
- GMAT 750 Q50 V41 IR8 BUT AWA3.0 - super surprised by my AWA 3.0, it was probably because my essay was very short (I guess).

Reason for Rotman MBA:
- friendlier immigration laws in Canada - I'm still conflicted on applying to HBS, Wharton, Stanford, etc
- want to switch to consulting preferably in MBB
- really want to experience a top MBA journey, build a strong network and have a good time

Hello hasanjaved and thank you for your post. Rotman is a great choice if your goal is to pursue management consulting. As a general rule of thumb, the better-ranked schools will give you the most exit opportunities, as the pipelines have been established for new recruits to come in. Lesser ranked schools require you to network a bit harder to carve out a spot for yourself at a desirable company.

That said, looking into some of the top U.S. programs may be worth it from a recruiting standpoint, and in terms of their powerful networks. You have a good GMAT score and strong work experience and could certainly be a strong candidate if you submit a well-crafted personal story, articulate specific post-MBA goals, etc.

Do not hesitate to reach out to scott@personalmbacoach.com to further discuss your candidacy. Program selection is part of our admissions consulting packages. We would be happy to help you determine which schools to target and provide guidance for other key parts of your applications to help set you up for success.

Hi abhisheksehrawat,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Starting with stats, your undergrad GPA is on the lower side. You have a solid GMAT score and can compensate for your low GPA. On the work front, I can see a good career trajectory. So you will need to explain how you perform better than your peers to grab promotions. You will need to show career progression and bring stories of leadership and impact. Your ECs sound good. They demonstrate your ability to give back to society, which is valued by most business schools. You can share your experiences with Indian youth foundation and your personal initiative. Talking about all these will create an interesting discussion between you and the adcoms.

If you need any direction/guidance over any aspect of your application and have any specific concerns, you can ask us on the forum Ask MBA & Beyond.

Overall you have a good profile, but I don’t see much impact right now. I would like to know some major aspects of your work experience and your post-MBA goals to evaluate better. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and gauge your fit for the school. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Hi mfukuhara,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. The average GMAT score for Rotman is 665, and your’s is 700, so this part is sorted for you. Regarding your work experience, I see you have been in different kinds of industries (construction & education) which, if exhibited aptly to adcoms, can put you in a great spot. You will need to bring the leadership stories and impact you have created in the organization. Your community experience sounds good, do speak about it. But do you pursue any hobbies right now? ECs are not about doing something big. It’s about what are your hobbies and interests, what you just like to do beyond work? So, try to dig deeper and find answers for the same that will show your diverse personality.

A Product manager requires a wide array of skills, including negotiation and analytical skills. You will need to explore which other skills are needed for PM and what you are missing that Rotman’s community and curriculum can help you with. Overall you have a good profile. I’d like to hear your story extensively in order to understand your USP that can help you project your story competitively.

If you need any direction/guidance over any aspect of your application and have any specific concerns, you can ask us on the forum Ask MBA & Beyond.

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and your further chances to Rotman. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Hi saghosh1,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Starting with stats, you have a good GMAT score. On the work front, I can see a good career trajectory. You will need to explain your career progression in a stark way. I think your work experience will definitely make a case for a strong leader in you and will surely exhibit you as a high-performing individual. You will need to dig deeper into your work and find an instance where you have contributed to the organisation’s growth and development and thoroughly explained it in your essays. Talking about your multi-million dollar project and especially your contribution to it can bring a good narrative.

Your community experience is good. However, what I find missing here is a mention of your hobbies or interests. Talking about the things you're passionate about and which helped make you a better person in any way provides a different insight to the adcoms and makes the apps interesting (the most overlooked and at the same time important aspect).

If you need any direction/guidance over any aspect of your application and have any specific concerns, you can ask us on the forum Ask MBA & Beyond.

Overall you have a good profile. However, I would like to know your post-MBA goals to gauge your fit for Rotman. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and your further chances to Rotman. Hello saghosh1,

It sounds like you have some good leadership experience from your current position. Your extracurricular experiences sound interesting as well, and I am curious to learn more about your roles at these organizations!

Your GMAT looks solid for Rotman. A lot, however, will come down to crafting a strong personal story. Personal MBA Coach helps applicants translate their experiences into unique, compelling essays and would be happy to provide you with guidance. This is an area that Personal MBA Coach’s clients often need the most help with, and part of our comprehensive packages.

What are your post-MBA goals? Rotman is a great choice for management consulting and finance, though of course, they span beyond this as well.

Do not hesitate to reach out to scott@personalmbacoach.com to continue the conversation. We regularly work with Indian male engineers and can help you put together strong applications for your target schools.

Hi robotman88,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. Starting with stats, your undergrad GPA is good, and you scored a good GMAT. In terms of work experience, you have quite less work experience than the average necessary for Rotman. You may apply if you are capable of creating compelling stories. After all, quality is more important than quantity. Working at one of the Big Four firms exposes you to global corporations, broadening your horizons. I don't have many specifics about your work experience regarding impact and leadership roles, but I believe you can demonstrate these attributes via your work and personality.

You have so many accomplishments. You can bring the most impactful one to distinguish yourself from other applicants. Try to bring stories on things about which you are passionate; ECs are all about that. It will start an intriguing discussion between you and the adcoms.

It would be great if you could share with me the roles and responsibilities you have undertaken in your work so that I can connect the dots between your prior work experience and post-MBA goals and better advise you.

Overall, you have a strong profile. I'd like to learn more about your story to see whether we can develop amazing stories together or whether you need to gain more experience. You may want to read an article on mba with little work experience, it will help you understand how you can enhance your application despite little work experience.

If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you to discuss your profile in length and guide you more. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

How to enhance your application and maximize your chances in Round 1 for fall intake

Hello robotman88,

While many MBA programs have no minimum work experience requirement, applicants have 3 to 6 years of pre-MBA experience on average. With a 740 GMAT and 2 years of work experience at a big 4, you have some promising credentials.

It sounds like you have strong leadership experience via your extracurriculars as well. I would like to know more about your current role since leadership in the workplace is also important (and this may have a bearing on whether or not we recommend that you apply now).

For Rotman, the average age of full-time MBA admits on their last reported class profile was 27, with an average of 4 years of work experience. Keeping this in mind, you would be on the younger side. However, consultants often apply to business school earlier on because consulting is a great industry for gaining strong pre-MBA experience and exposure.

Founded by a former consultant, Personal MBA Coach helps numerous consultants get into top MBA programs and earn significant scholarships each year. Feel free to send a note to scott@personalmbacoach.com to further discuss your situation.

You may benefit from our Early MBA Planning services to get another year of work experience under your belt and make all of the right decisions in the time leading up to your applications. But again, let's discuss!

Best,

Hi cheekycheeky,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. Starting with stats, your undergrad GPA is good and a good GMAT score as well. On the work front, you have worked in 3 different companies. You will need to bring stories of impact and leadership from your work experience. You have been promoted to several levels in your career, but you will have to explain the frequent job changes. It is difficult to predict the outcome. The most important thing is to be able to explain why you made each shift and how those actions brought you closer to your post-MBA goals (so essentially, being able to "connect the dots").

Your ECs are good. You should also include any hobbies or interests you have, it will bring diversity to your profile. Regarding your post-MBA goals, you especially need to articulate your post-MBA goals very detailed and concrete, so take care of that. Rotman, especially, looks for how you have faced challenges. And I believe if you dig deeper, you can bring this to your profile. Overall you have a good profile and had a shot at Rotman. I would suggest you do good inside-out research on Rotman and its culture and values to help you highlight how you can contribute to its community and school. Try to weave an impactful story in your application that will help you stand out in the reader’s mind.

If you need more direction/guidance over any aspect of your application and have any specific concerns, you can ask us on the forum Ask MBA & Beyond.

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to Rotman. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

How to enhance your application and maximize your chances in Round 1 for fall intake

Hi saifmd129,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Starting with stats, your undergrad GPA is good. In addition, you have a decent GMAT score if you are planning to apply for Rotman and Ivey. So, this part is pretty sorted for you. On the work front, leading a team of 10 members would have helped you to showcase your leadership abilities. Also, try to include the impact you brought on the organization you are working for. Regarding your ECs, you can talk about the research paper you have published. Also, try to include any hobby or interest you have. It will bring diversity to your apps and make you stand out from other applicants. Rotman and Ivey seek different values in their candidates, you’ll have to tailor your profile according to their requirements.

As far as your post-MBA Goals are concerned, they make sense for your career trajectory, and I would need more clarity as to why PM and what you're thinking of in the long term. You need to be specific and clear about your post-MBA goals.

If you need more direction/guidance over any aspect of your application and have any specific concerns, you can ask us on the forum Ask MBA & Beyond.

• Is 3 years a good enough experience of should I wait another year?

Quality is more important than quantity. If you target the correct schools and convincingly illustrate the five qualities listed below in your MBA application essays, CV, and recommendations, you may still have a chance of getting into a top business school:

Positive, practical reasons for applying at this time.
Outstanding professional development.
Outstanding impact, leadership, and success.
Maturity
Ability to contribute to the program both socially and academically.

• Any further suggestions to improve my profile?

You can quickly work to integrate with more job responsibilities at your current job (such as assuming more of a leadership role, taking on new projects, etc.) and spend time improving your work ethic or you can show 1-5 above, apply with the experience you have, and hope for the best while optimizing the rest of your application. Of course, work on ECs as well.

• Is corporate world experience really important for admissions at Top universities?

Business schools want students who can bring credit to their university and want to maximize their success value. Working at firms or companies that compete in the corporate world will make you stand apart from the competition. However, quality matters. Business schools anticipate that you will have a positive, enriching experience (whether you work in the corporate world or any small company).

Overall you have a good profile. What's going to matter most about your application is how you link experiential dots and make a great narrative. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to answer any of your concerns and discuss your further chances at b-schools. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.
