Re: Originally, the term "diva" was applied to the leading female singer [#permalink]
Originally, the term "diva" was applied to the leading female singer in an opera company; however, in recent years, the term has come to differentiate the really thrilling stars of this genre and the mere good ones.

A) however, in recent years, the term has come to differentiate the really thrilling stars of this genre and the mere good ones.
'differentiate from' is the correct usage.

B) but, in recent years, the term has come to differentiate the really thrilling stars of this genre from the merely good ones.
Use of 'but' after the semicolon is incorrect

C) moreover, in recent years, the term has come to differentiate the really thrilling stars of this genre from the mere good ones.
Use of 'moreover' does not present the contrast required.

D) and, in recent years, the term has come to distinguish between the really thrilling stars of this genre from the merely good ones.
Use of 'and' does not present the contrast required.
Use of 'and' after the semicolon is incorrect

E) however, in recent years, the term has come to differentiate the really thrilling stars of this genre from the merely good ones.
Correct

Choice E is the answer.

Re: Originally, the term "diva" was applied to the leading female singer [#permalink]
The 2nd part of the sentence (underlined) after semicolon must begin with "moreover" or "however".
These are conjunctive adverbs.

Note: An independent clause can be follow another one (after semicolon) in below cases :
1. No conjunction + independent clause
2. Conjunctive adverbs + independent clause.

More on Conjunctive adverbs : https://www.veritasprep.com/blog/2014/06/understanding-conjunctions-on-the-gmat/

As all the choices have conjunctions, we must have the case - Conjunctive adverbs + independent clause.

"and" and "but" are subordinating conjunctions and can't be followed after semi-colon.
Thus,we can eliminate choices B and D for this very reason.

Differentiate X FROM Y is correct structure.
We can eliminate choice A for Differentiate X AND Y

Choice C can be eliminated because the actual sentence implies
Originally <something> ; however <something else> - "moreover" addsto the original understanding and does not give a contrast.

E fixes all the issues.

IMO E.

A) however, in recent years, the term has come to differentiate the really thrilling stars of this genre and the mere good ones. -> differentiate x from y is correct idiom. Incorrect.

B) but, in recent years, the term has come to differentiate the really thrilling stars of this genre from the merely good ones. -> As we have new sentence, so use of "but" is incorrect.

C) moreover, in recent years, the term has come to differentiate the really thrilling stars of this genre from the mere good ones. -> moreover doesn't provide contrast required for the sentence. Incorrect.

D) and, in recent years, the term has come to distinguish between the really thrilling stars of this genre from the merely good ones. -> "And" is incorrect. It doesn't provide contrast.

E) however, in recent years, the term has come to differentiate the really thrilling stars of this genre from the merely good ones. -> It is better than A. Let's keep it.

So, I think E. :)
