This is a well-balanced article, highlighting both the pros and cons! However,a few important details would be nice - Did "Luis" and "Arya" also have to return to their home country? How can Subash possibly pay off a $200k loan with an indian salary?

Opportunities: Candidates seek out better job/life opportunities and believe that securing an MBA is one way to achieve that.

It is very well suited to my reasoning.

I agree visa could be issue and I know few people who had to come back to his country even after MIT Sloan FP program , but he told that no one can the experience, learning and skills take from him that he learnt there. He was promoted to Head in few years.

Reason for selecting school and in which area is clear to me.

Repercussions and Way forward in the COVID era
My reasoning is same as my friend's : I don't know what lies ahead in future but it doesn't prevent me pursuing MBA.

To conclude, I firmly believe that MBAs are worthy

Hi, danbrown9445. Thanks a lot for the feedback :)
To answer your question-- Yes, all three had to return to their home countries; however, disclosing information on their loan repayment seemed very personal.
Will definitely try to provide as much insight into it the next time around. :D

So not even one of them got a work visa?
I understand your point about not disclosing financial details, but for many applicants from low income countries, the MAIN purpose of doing an MBA from abroad is getting a job in that country.
Would love to hear more about the visa/financial aspect in your next article.

Anupamakashyap97 great article. However, there are a few questions worth answering. Don't MBA students get an OPT for 12 month after graduation? Did Luis, Arya, and Subhash use it before going to their home countries? And, don't specific MBAs (like MBA in finance) provide a 24-month extension after 12 month of OPT?

Great insights! More so coming from the real experiences of present students from different MBA programs. There is still hope and optimism in all the gloom and doom scenario.

My specific question is - if Indian students in abroad programs have to come back to India for whatever reasons, is not it prudent to go for top Indian programs such ISB PGP, IIM-A PGPX etc. ?

Thanks!

I know some of the background of these people (I don't know Arya though) but Luis and Subhash did get the OPT and stayed in the US for 12 months. One of them ended up not getting it in the lottery and the other person was either unable to secure it or chose to go back to their home country.... I hope I am not stepping over the privacy curtain here by disclosing any of this :-o

And you are absolutely correct - most Top 30 MBA programs today do offer a 3-year OPT for the 2021 incoming class through the STEM OPT designation (You can see the list here: https://gmatclub.com/forum/top-stem-mba ... 13573.html and many offered it for the last 1-2 years. There are a few schools that were not able to offer it for people graduating even as recently as last year - Spring 2020). Unfortunately these 2 individuals were not eligible for the STEM OPT as their class was not included in STEM designation/option.

Can anyone give me more reasons about having to land off Top Tier US program otherwise just dont go for MBA?
are there really opportunities for international students seeking for H1B after graduating from a rank 60-80 program? from my experience this year, admission and fundings are more relaxing and generous for those programs

Good question - I think an MBA from a Top 50 or Top 100 school is still worth it if you can get a scholarship to attend. Ideally, it would be a full scholarship so it is technically free. You will still have to pay $40-50K in living expenses and probably borrow money for that but it is a lot more affordable and provides a possibility to pay back regardless the outcome vs. $50K + $150K tuition.

There are quite a few things you have to trade off with a Top 100 MBA vs. a Top 20 but it does not mean it is Top 20 or bust. The top 100 will not set you back - it will still propel you forward but you will have to do more work, take more risk (which scholarship mitigates) and basically not expect any help in recruiting. If you want to see all the things that you trade off/lose/gain - see this post: https://gmatclub.com/forum/value-of-a-t ... 13365.html

I can see someone who is employable and looks great on paper/resume doing well in a low-ranked program with a scholarship. However, if you want to get more chances at finding a job, more growth opportunities, prestige, higher pay (though total pay and savings are different things in diff parts of the world).

Ultimately if you attend a Top 100 program, keep in mind that there are people who pay full sticker price and find them valuable and helpful... even if not ranked very high. MBA is about a personal transformation and change, not gaining some mysterious knowledge such as an auto-mechanic school for example or a CPA class. It is about focusing on basics and getting them better.

I would add that it’s not uncommon for international applicants to take longer than US domestic students to recruit. Hopefully that will not be the story for everyone and those who are willing to fight and battle for a job, will get recruited sooner but I would estimate the average time for an international graduate would be 3-6 months after graduation.

There are definitely people who find jobs before they graduate. It is also a greater propensity in higher ranked schools where the caliber of international students is much higher With brand names on the resumes that assistant recruiting. On the flipside, there are also those who take 12 months to get a job because if you don’t get an offer by October, there’s no hiring that happens in November or December really. Everything gets shifted to January and February. You do need to hustle and worry and stress and try to get as many interviews as you can….

Great article... Very much helps in clearing a lot of doubts of aspirants..
But it would have been better if you could share a few tips about how these people are repaying their $200,000 loans with their salaries in their home countries.
I can understand privacy concerns, but it can be shared in a generalised way as tips in bullet points without mentioning anyone's name. Or can also be shared as specific case studies.
Student Loans add to long term liabilities and remains a headache until repaid. A few tips can really help a lot of students in further clarification.

You’re bringing up a very good question. I would be interested in that too!!!! (I did not ask honestly) That’s kind of the million dollar / 200,000 question, right?
