The ratio of the income and expenditure of Amy and Bob are 5 : 8 and 11 : 10, respectively. If Amy and Bob save $7900 and $21000 respectively, what are their incomes ?

A. Amy = $10,000, Bob = $16,000
B. Amy = $15,000, Bob = $24,000
C. Amy = $20,000, Bob = $32,000
D. Amy = $25,000, Bob = $40,000
E. Amy = $30,000, Bob = $48,000

Shouldn't the question be incomes and expenditures instead of singular word income and expenditure. i thought 5:8 is ratio of income and expenditure of Amy's Bunuel

It sounds really weird if income and expenditure are plural. Note the article in front of income and expenditure. For some reason you dropped it in your writing…. Making it plural will make it sound weird.

The only potential improvement I could see is making ratio plural. Making it The ratios of Amy and Bob…. Are. But it is harder to read that way.

Good thinking but I would probably stop picking apart words in math questions 😎. There isn’t as much of a grammatical regiment that’s followed in math questions, recipes, and signage. As you have seen, several experts have passes it by.

Re: The ratio of the income and expenditure of Amy and Bob are 5 : 8 and [#permalink]
savings total: $7900 + $21000 = $28900
Expenditure ratio: 11:10 (11+10=21) (TOTAL)

Income - savings = Expenditure
Option C: Total income = $52000 - $28900 = 23100 (only option divisible by 21)
