Dear Prasad,
Thank you for sharing your profile.
Below is my evaluation of your candidature for Emory.
GMAT: Very Good – you will be among the top 1 percentile of the class.
Academics: Average. Typically, schools require 12+4; in your case, it is 12+3 – that is the negative aspect. The certifications show that you wanted to upskill yourself and build subject matter expertise in your field.
Work Experience: Average. While the quantum of experience is slightly on the lower end, fast tracked promotions and familiarity with large scale govt. project having National significance adds value to your experience.
Extra-Curricular: Average. You will need to showcase the impact you created by virtue of your work in a charitable organization. The personal motivation behind the voluntary work should be clear demonstrated in your application.
Post MBA Goals: This is where major red flags will come when the ad com evaluates your profile. Most B schools gauge career goals in terms of feasibility, practicality, and logical transition. In your case, you are looking to change both your function (from Finance to Product Management) as well as industry (Infrastructure to FMCG) and that too in a different country. While the transition is not impossible, from an adcom’s perspective the probability of this switch right after the MBA is low.
Overall suggestions:
• Goizueta has a small and close-knit class size ~150 odd people where it expects each student to resonate with the school’s values of diversity, equity and inclusion. You will need to demonstrate these values in your application (essays, LOR, and CV) through compelling personal /professional stories.
• A lot of companies coming to Emory for recruitment are from in and around Atlanta. So, you should smartly state career goals aligned with this insight.
• The quantum of your experience would be slightly lower than most of your classmates. Hence to make strong impression, you will need to convey how, you did well in the relatively short time at work, were on an upward trajectory in your career path, and well-positioned to contribute to the cohort.
If you play your cards well and make a logical (stressing on the post MBA Career goals) application, I am confident that you will get an admit with up to a max. of 40% scholarship. With a score of 730 and 3.5 years of consulting experience post an engineering degree, I received a 20% scholarship in 2013 when I applied (ended up declining the offer and joining ISB for my own reasons).
Lastly, all the pointers (except the small class size and location proximity to Atlanta) are applicable for your ISB application as well, and again if you submit a strong application, you stand to get into ISB with flying colors (do not be hopeful of Scholarship though
).
Happy to have a discussion with you in case you require further support and need assistance while drafting your application.
Cheers and Best of luck.
