OFFICIAL EXPLANATION



Psychological research suggests that women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas for men substance abuse and recklessness is more typical.


(A) women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas for men substance abuse and recklessness is more typical

Incorrect.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The singular verb is does not agree with the plural subject substance abuse and recklessness.


(B) women are prone more than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas in men symptoms of depression typically include substance abuse and recklessness

Incorrect.

While this answer choice corrects the Subject Verb Agreement mistake in the original question, it is stylistically flawed.

The corrected sentence changes the idiomatic construction of the comparative more prone than men (more X than Y) to the awkward construction prone more than men (X more than Y).


(C) women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas depressive symptoms in men typically include substance abuse and recklessness

Hi! I was torn between B and C, and eliminated C because of its use of "depressive symptoms". Are "symptoms of depression" and "depressive symptoms" the same? What do you think?
