Re: Psychological research suggests that women are more prone than men to [#permalink]
Quote:
Psychological research suggests that women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas for men substance abuse and recklessness is more typical.

(A) women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas for men substance abuse and recklessness is more typical- S-V error and first substance and recklessness is not typical

(B) women are prone more than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas in men symptoms of depression typically include substance abuse and recklessness

(C) women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas depressive symptoms in men typically include substance abuse and recklessness- i think "C" is concise. Lets wait for OA

(D) in men depressive symptoms typically include substance abuse and recklessness, rather than women who are more prone to exhibit symptoms such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, traditionally associated with depression- Second part fragment

(E) rather than substance abuse and recklessness, which appear as symptoms of depression in men, women are the more prone to symptoms traditionally associated with depression, such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness- that followed by conjunction wrong

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Psychological research suggests that women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas for men substance abuse and recklessness is more typical.

(A) women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas for men substance abuse and recklessness is more typical

Incorrect.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The singular verb is does not agree with the plural subject substance abuse and recklessness.

(B) women are prone more than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas in men symptoms of depression typically include substance abuse and recklessness

Incorrect.

While this answer choice corrects the Subject Verb Agreement mistake in the original question, it is stylistically flawed.

The corrected sentence changes the idiomatic construction of the comparative more prone than men (more X than Y) to the awkward construction prone more than men (X more than Y).

(C) women are more prone than men to exhibit symptoms traditionally associated with depression such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, whereas depressive symptoms in men typically include substance abuse and recklessness

This answer choice makes correct use of the Comparative construction more prone than men (more X than Y) to logically compare men and women, and uses the adverb typically to describe the verb include.

In addition, it corrects the original subject verb agreement error by changing the singular verb is to the plural verb include.

(D) in men depressive symptoms typically include substance abuse and recklessness, rather than women who are more prone to exhibit symptoms such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness, traditionally associated with depression

Incorrect.

This answer choice is illogical and grammatically incorrect. By changing the sentence structure and using rather, this answer choice creates an illogical parallelism between the second symptom of male depression recklessness and women.

Stop Sign: A rather than B

When you identify this structure, make sure it follows these rules:

    1. A and B must be of the same part of speech.
    2. A and B must be logically parallel.

(E) rather than substance abuse and recklessness, which appear as symptoms of depression in men, women are the more prone to symptoms traditionally associated with depression, such as feelings of sadness and worthlessness

Incorrect.

This answer choice is illogical. By changing the sentence structure and using rather, this answer choice creates an illogical parallelism between the symptoms of male depression substance abuse and recklessness and women.

Hi! I was torn between B and C, and eliminated C because of its use of "depressive symptoms". Are "symptoms of depression" and "depressive symptoms" the same? What do you think?
