You may need to give us more information on why you want to do an MBA, what do you want to do post-MBA, extracurriculars etc.

Hi Jatin,

With the limited information given, I don't see any reason for not making it to IIM A, B and C. Your GMAT score is on par with the class average and you have IT consulting plus start-up experience. International experience also helps you stand out.

Your application and essays/SOP will be key in ensuring selection. Focus on your diverse experience, your learnings from it and how these propel you on the path of becoming a capable business leader. Your learnings from the failed start-ups and international experience can help you showcase why IIMs should select you; so prepare a compelling application and essay/SOP.

Regards,
Tridisha

Hi jatin093,

Thank you for sharing your profile.

Academic Potential
You have a good GMAT score. The average GMAT at IIM A was 701 so you are above the class average. It would help to know your undergraduate institution and grades. Keep in mind though that some schools like IIM Calcutta mandate that the GMAT score be less than 36 months old.

Work Experience
IIM Ahmedabad and Bangalore need at least four years of full-time work experience after completion of graduation while IIM Calcutta needs five years of work experience at the time of starting classes. You meet all their criteria.

Post MBA Career goals
Given your prior experience as a technology consultant, the move to the product manager role is a natural progression. It will be accepted by the admission committee and an MBA will help you with the move.

International Exposure
21% of the class at IIM A had international exposure and the international experience helps you differentiate yourself.

Unsuccessful startups
Launching two startups further differentiate your profile from a typical engineer. You will have greater business knowledge than your peers. You should focus on showcasing your learnings from these failures.

We have special packages focusing on Indian Executive MBA programs. Please reach out to us at team.mba@theredpen.in if you have any further queries.

Hello NikhilJose

Profile looks pretty balanced and checks most boxes.
GMAT- decent.
International work experience helps.
Work ex otherwise also gives some diversity. Talk about the thought behind each career move especially the recent one, why are you planning to move to an MBA program fresh into a new job.
Extracurricular activities are quite interesting (whichever ones you choose to highlight in the essay, make sure to show relevance of it in a b school application).
Only thing missing is your career goals. This will be critical at some stage how you showcase the need and fit for an MBA.
Otherwise, looks good to go.

Best

I plan to apply to PGPX (IIM A), EPGP (IIM B), MBAeX (IIM C) & ISB Hyderabad. Please evaluate my profile.

Age - 35
10th - 87
12th - 89
B Tech - From NIT (Civil Engg) - 7.35/10
Work-Ex after B-Tech - 3 Years in a Power Plant
PGDM - From a Not very reputed B School - Poor Grades - 4.2/8
Work-Ex after PGDM - 8 Years in Administration. Worked as Bursar of an International School for 5 Years. Currently working for an University.

Appearing for GMAT in September 2021 - Target Score - 730+

Do I stand chance for interview call & then an Admit. Or they won't look at me considering my Age & having already done PGDM once.

Thanks!

Hi!

Yes, you do stand a chance to get interview calls and even admits. Target around 690+ in GMAT.
There are candidates every year in these schools who are pursuing MBA for the second time; however you should be able to explain why you need another MBA now.

A lot depends on your profile, how you can connect your life story till now and the clarity you have on why you need another MBA and your goals after that. Your learnings from your past experiences and how you differentiate yourself from others is also key.
Do note that IIM B prefers candidates with less than 12 years of experience (as stated on their website).

Regards,
Tridisha

Hi Samkrocks

There is no reason why you will not get interview calls and admits to the programs mentioned. Building a strong application and stellar essays should be your focus now. Your profile involves a few different roles and it is important that you highlight your learnings from them. Additionally, linking your career story, showing how one job has led to another along with showing clarity of thought on why MBA and what after that will be very important.

GMAT scores for these programs range from 630-640 levels to 750-760. So, it is important at this stage to analyze if you want to apply with your current score or wait for next round.

Regards,
Tridisha

Re: IIM Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
I am actually willing to apply for IIMA PGPX, IIMC MBAEx, IIMB EPGP, IIML IPMX and IIMI EPGP in 2022
Bachelors of Commerce- 78%
Work experience: over 5 years(No International experience- I know this will be a disadvantage for me)
1.Big 4(Accounting Team)- 2 years 4 months
2.In an Asset management company which is not in the bulge bracket(more of a custodian bank)- 1 year 8 months(accounting team)
3. A bulge bracket investment banking company - 1 year 6 months and still counting as I work here currently(accounting team)
More details on work experience:

GMAT: I am planning to take it by the end of this year/January 2022, I am planning to apply in the next year.
Reason to do an executive MBA: During my stint at my last 2 companies, I discovered that there are lot of teams in my industry(you can call it BFSI/Investment Management) which actually do more exciting stuff and handle things at a higher level. A degree in Management will definitely help me become a better candidate to get into one of those roles.
Target Industry: BFSI, Consulting
Extra-curricular and Co-curricular: My biggest worry, I have nothing. I am trying to find out as much as I can and hopefully I'll at least have one by the end of this year.
I am confining myself to colleges in India as a lot of colleges abroad reject applicants with a three year degree.
I know it is too ambitious for me to aim for A, B and C as I don't have flashy things on my resume like international work ex, a brand name like IIT/NIT/SRCC and exceptional achievements. So, I am more keen on IIML and IIMI. I would really appreciate if someone shares a very realistic evaluation.
Also, what should be my target GMAT score?

Hello Sid2011

You might be underselling yourself.
Your work experience looks diverse and could be a big strength, if you can combine it with a strong GMAT (target 710+, higher the better).
Extracurriculars are important, but understand their place- they are a way to show diversity and qualities that will help you add value to the experience of your batchmates inside and outside the classroom.
Can you do that via other ways? Sure.
And anyway, you have some time to get started as you are applying next year.
Just make sure you get involved in an activity only because you love it and have a real reason, not for the sake of B-School admissions.
Same deal with degrees from top institutes. If you graduated from a top institute, sure, it give the school confidence about your academic abilities. But the same thing can be indicated via consistent top scores at other universities, or a high GMAT score. Progress and analytical achievements at work or other certifications can also help prove the same (though slightly difficult).

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Thanks Varun. Honestly, I am a little intimidated by looking at the profiles which have been posted on this thread. Almost all of them are Engineers(a very few CAs also) with so many achievements, I highly doubt if I'll be able to make the cut even with a good GMAT score. Moreover, I am doing just a desk job in Finance/Accounting, these people are doing real work- one says that he is working in a PSU on a critical project, the other says he is heading R&D at a place outside of India, a few have already completed MS in USA. They have so much to talk about in the interview as compared to me who just has excel and powerpoint :) . Anyways, I'll attempt GMAT in the coming months and come back to this forum.
