FROM Stacy Blackman Consulting Blog: UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA Essays for 2021-2022

The application to Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina is now live. Here are the updated UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA essays for the 2021-2022 admissions season.

UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA Essays
From the AdCom: You’ll respond to two required essay questions and one optional question. Your responses should be concise, clear, and introspective as we’ll use them to learn more about you, your motivations, and your aspirations. Typically, we ask that you keep responses to 300-500 words max.

Required Essay 1
Your response should be no longer than 500 words and should address the following questions:

  • What are your immediate career goals and how will you benefit from earning an MBA at Kenan-Flagler Business School?
  • As the business world continues to evolve, circumstances can change and guide you in a different direction. Should your goals that you provided above not transpire, what other opportunities would you explore?
Required Essay 2
Your response should be no longer than 300 words and should address the following question:

We all belong to different communities representing various aspects of who we are, including groups we belong to, where we come from, how we think, what we believe, and how we see and experience the world. The process of discovery is strengthened when people with diverse perspectives and life experiences come together to share and learn from one another, negotiate differences, and engage in diplomacy.

How have you dealt with differences in your personal or professional relationships? In what ways will you contribute to the community and learning environment by embracing your authentic self while respecting others? How do you envision furthering your growth in inclusive leadership as an MBA student and as a business leader?

Optional Essay
We encourage you to tell us more about who you are so we can get to know you as a person and potential member of the Carolina community. Use this essay to convey information that you may not have otherwise been able to in the application. Your response should be no longer than 200 words.

Optional topics:

    • Personal or professional accomplishments
    • Interests and passions
    • Gaps in work experience or inconsistent academic performance
    • Context for recommender selection
    • A fun fact about yourself
If you are re-applying to the program, we appreciate your continued interest in UNC Kenan-Flagler. We require a complete application in addition to a brief essay (100 words or less) that describes how your application differs from your previous submission and that alerts us to new test scores, a recent promotion, or other areas that demonstrate how you have strengthened your candidacy.

7 Common Mistakes International MBA Applicants Make [#permalink]
Expert Reply
FROM Stacy Blackman Consulting Blog: 7 Common Mistakes International MBA Applicants Make

International MBA Applicants: Avoid These Blunders
  • Choosing business schools solely by their rankings
  • Omitting unique personal experiences in essays
  • Focusing too much on MBA message boards
  • Failing to correctly translate/explain GPA and undergrad transcript
  • Appearing uncomfortable with a new culture and language
  • Failing to manage recommenders, especially nonnative English speakers
  • Applying in round 3
Creating a robust and dynamic classroom experience through diversity is a primary focus of the top business schools in the United States, offering students the chance to interact with peers from an array of countries and professional backgrounds. Although international MBA applicant numbers dipped last season due to COVID-19, they still had a strong showing at top schools.

For instance, international admits made up a significant percentage of the 2020 incoming class: 33% at Harvard Business School, 35% at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and 44% at Columbia Business School.

Yet sometimes, lack of awareness regarding what a strong MBA application should include derails even the most stellar international candidates. With that in mind, international MBA students should avoid these seven common hurdles when targeting top-ranked U.S. business schools.

  • Choosing business schools solely with rankings.
Campus visits are still impacted for all MBA hopefuls this cycle. But even under normal circumstances, many international students can’t visit every school in person due to financial or time constraints. Therefore, poring over published rankings is an obvious way to create a shortlist of target schools.

But don’t let this be your only method. While brand and cache carry a lot of weight worldwide, you need to look beyond rankings to find the programs that best serve your individual needs.

[*]
Omitting unique personal experiences in essays.
In many cultures, sharing personal stories with strangers is taboo. International MBA applicants may feel strongly tempted to keep the focus solely on previous education and professional experience. That is a serious mistake. To stand out from the masses of similarly qualified applicants, you must focus your essays on aspects other than your quantitative or technical background.

The key to a successful MBA application is showing what you – and nobody else but you –bring to the program. Don’t be afraid to let your originality and true personality come through in your application materials. This article by Stacy will help guide you further on the essay mistakes to avoid.

[*]
Focusing too much on MBA message boards.
It’s unsettling to be so far away geographically when you’re applying to business school. Naturally, the instinct is to seek out all possible news and information about your dream U.S. programs.

But local MBA websites and message boards can be rife with rumors and inaccurate information that can steer you in the wrong direction as you consider application strategies. Remember, only the AdCom truly knows about interview invites, acceptance rates, waitlists, or anything else of importance for prospective students.

[*]
Failing to correctly translate or explain GPA and undergrad transcript.
This is a common yet complicated issue since there’s no universal standard to convert an international GPA to the American 4.0 system. Once you’ve translated your home country’s GPA using an online grade conversion calculator, assess whether it accurately reflects the rigor of your undergrad institution.

Variations in course difficulty can also lead to confusion. For some transcripts, a 75% would be equivalent to an American A-plus. At other, more difficult programs, a percentage as low as 60 would translate to an A grade.

If you feel there’s some ambiguity in this metric of your transcript, briefly explain any relevant information that would clarify its understanding of your academic performance.

[*]
Appearing uncomfortable with a new culture and language.
Feeling comfortable working across cultures is crucial in today’s global business landscape. Make sure to highlight any previous study or work abroad experiences, and include examples of times where you have worked with people from other cultural or language backgrounds.

The ability to communicate effectively and fluently in English is also non-negotiable at top MBA programs. For this reason, several schools include a video interview question in their applications to verify candidate’s comfort with the language.

Enroll in conversation courses if needed and read business publications in English to bolster your vocabulary and increase fluency. Stacy Blackman Consulting offers an a la carte video interview/essay prep service that includes a professional review and written feedback.

[*]
Failing to manage recommenders, especially non-native English speakers.
You need to convey to your recommenders the criteria for a successful letter of recommendation to a top business school. Otherwise, you’re left with well-intentioned but generic platitudes. These provide little insight into exactly what makes you a strong leader, team player, and an asset to the program.

Determine exactly what your recommenders should highlight and guide them by providing anecdotes or themes you’d like them to mention. If your recommenders are not native English speakers, make sure the letter is well-written or, if needed, translated into English.

[*]
Applying in round three.
Round three is difficult to pull off successfully for any applicant. But international candidates should avoid this application cycle for a few practical reasons. Applying in one of the earlier rounds reduces the stress of managing this process once you’re already received an offer of admission and can apply for a student visa.

Also, the earlier you apply, the more time you have to secure and provide proof of funding, whether through work, loans, family, or other means. At some schools, scholarship offers go out at the same time as admissions offers. In these cases, more award funding is generally available the earlier you apply.

Planning, planning, and more planning are key to a smooth application process no matter where you are applying. But the logistics are even more critical for international students. Reach out to us today and learn how Stacy Blackman Consulting has helped countless international MBA applicants gain admission to their dream U.S. schools.

Tuesday Tips: USC Marshall Application Essays, Tips for 2021-2022 [#permalink]
Expert Reply
FROM Stacy Blackman Consulting Blog: Tuesday Tips: USC Marshall Application Essays, Tips for 2021-2022

The USC Marshall School of Business reflects the diversity and dynamism of the Los Angeles area. These USC Marshall application essays allow you the space to express how you will fit into the community.

According to Assistant Dean and Director Evan Bouffides: “What matters most to us is our learning community and how, through collaboration, we grow and learn together to collectively strengthen the Trojan Family.”

Because community is so vital to this USC Marshall application, the admissions office wants to know who you are as a person. As Bouffides explains, “We do not believe in the concept of the ‘perfect’ or ‘ideal’ candidate. In fact, there are more atypical candidates than typical ones, and everyone has a unique story.”

Though the USC Marshall School is a community of its own, the larger USC Trojan Family is an integral part of the school’s identity and offers additional academic opportunities for MBA students.

As you prepare your USC Marshall application, make sure to do your research. Remember to include talking to current and former students so that you can better understand the culture in depth. To learn more about the program, visit the USC Marshall website.

Need help with your USC Marshall application strategy? Contact us to learn more about what SBC can do for you.

Essay #1 (Required)
What is your specific, immediate short-term career goal upon completion of your MBA? Please include an intended position, function, and industry in your response. (word limit: 100)
With only 100 words to use here, stay brief, and focused in this USC application essay. Consider your plan when you graduate from USC. And make sure your resume and other application materials support this next step.

For example, if you are career switching, highlight any transferable skills in your resume. Another idea is to ask your recommenders to comment on your future plans. Further, as you craft all of these strategies, make sure you highlight how you will use your MBA to reach your goals.

What if your next job is a logical step from your prior experience to your MBA? Even if you think it’s obvious, it’s essential to be specific about your career goals. Describe the job you plan to pursue with as much detail as possible.

Essay #2 (Required)
Please draft a letter that begins with “Dear Admissions Committee” (word limit: 600)
This letter serves as your personal statement that provides the Admissions Committee with an understanding of your candidacy for Marshall beyond what is evident in other parts of your application.
This essay is purposely open-ended. You are free to express yourself in whatever way you see fit. The goal is to have an appreciation for and an understanding of each candidate in ways that are not captured by test scores, grades, and resumes.
Showing who you are as a person is essential to your USC Marshall application. Ideally, you can demonstrate that you understand the USC culture and values with your answer to this essay question.

First, start with your statistics and data. USC Marshall will see your GPA, your test scores, and your transcripts. Second, the admissions committee will see your career progress on your resume. Third, you will add some personal color to your application through the recommendation letters. These elements should show that you have leadership potential, academic promise, and a well-rounded personality. This essay is the place to fill any gaps.

Consider what you need to communicate to show all sides of your candidacy in this USC application essay. For example, if you are someone who has a standard career history, you might describe something interesting in your background. Perhaps you have an unusual hobby, have made an impact on the community, or have a unique family heritage.

Another aspect of your USC Marshall application that may not appear in your data is your passion for learning. For instance, if there is a professor you would want to work with, this question is an opportunity to discuss their work. Similarly, you may want to join or lead a club or community effort that isn’t obvious from the other data you submit.

Essay #3 (Optional)
Please provide any additional information you would like the admissions committee to consider. (word limit: 250)
This USC application essay offers an opportunity to add more information or to discuss a concern. Therefore, if you have a low GPA, a grade below a C in a quantitative subject, an employment gap, or any other issue in your background, this is the place to explain it.

However, if you want to highlight anything else about your career path, experience, or personal background, this essay allows you the space to do so. And, if you need to explain an area of concern, clearly explain what happened, and what you have done to improve or address the issue. Focus on the future in a positive manner to leave the strongest impression.

Choosing the Best MBA Delivery Option [#permalink]

FROM Stacy Blackman Consulting Blog: Choosing the Best MBA Delivery Option

Many prospective applicants are seriously considering whether this is the year to apply for an MBA. Business schools have become increasingly innovative in their approaches to management education. There are traditional two-year programs, one-year accelerated MBAs, part-time MBAs, executive MBAs, online programs, and global MBAs. But which MBA delivery option is right for you?

There’s something out there for every interest type and schedule.  If you’re having doubts about whether an MBA is feasible, don’t rule it out. Do some research first.

A one-year MBA may be right for you if:
Long the norm in Europe, accelerated MBA programs have grown in popularity stateside over the past several years. This format is best suited for those who want to continue working in the same industry but want to deepen their knowledge and skills in specific areas to move into a higher position.

Recruiters show no real preference for the two-year over the one-year program. Therefore, the decision often boils down to whether candidates are career accelerators or career changers.

Said Business School at Oxford

This degree is time-consuming and requires intense focus. Therefore, applicants must come onto the scene with a strong background in business fundamentals. Many programs show a definite preference for those with an undergraduate business degree.

This MBA delivery option is both a time and money saver. It often provides a faster return on investment as participants endure only one year of lost income. While the accelerated MBA option doesn’t allow for internships, students return to the workforce after 12 months.

An executive MBA may be right for you if:
This iteration of the MBA is explicitly tailored for mid-career professionals who want to continue working while pursuing their degrees. Executive MBA students also immediately apply the lessons of the classroom in the boardroom. They may be looking to switch industries or to transition from manager to entrepreneur. A demanding family life may also make it impossible to take advantage of the extracurricular activities available to traditional full-time MBA students, making an EMBA more desirable.

Students in an EMBA program must have the support of their employers. This format requires some time out of the office for week-long residencies or classes held on alternate Fridays. Historically, companies sponsored 100 percent of their employees’ studies. However, these days, only about a quarter of students receive full tuition reimbursement.

Many schools won’t state an actual number of required years of work experience. However, the expectation hovers around ten years. Participants are typically in their late 30s. Executive MBA applicants must show prior management responsibility and a record of significant achievements. This wealth of professional experience is what ultimately enriches the learning environment in the classroom.

An online MBA may be right for you if:
Some MBA aspirants are either unwilling or unable to leave their job and family to pursue a full-time, two-year degree. In that case, a program that you can complete from the comfort of your own home could be the ideal solution. The online MBA delivery option is even more appealing given that the caliber of such programs has improved dramatically in the past five years.

Carnegie Mellon’s Tepper School of Business and University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School tied for 1st place in US News’s 2021 ranking of online MBA programs. Meanwhile, IU Kelley School, USC Marshall School of Business, and the University of Florida Warrington round out the top five.

The pandemic has taught us all that we can navigate much of the global business environment remotely. An online MBA format maximizes these technologies and perhaps better prepares tomorrow’s business leaders to navigate the dominant communication methods.

This format requires a high degree of self-motivation and excellent time management. Like the accelerated MBA, online programs work best for candidates who want to stick to the same career path or move ahead within their current company.

Or, is a traditional MBA right for you?
The classic MBA experience is still the gold standard for many applicants, we’ve found. The whole immersion experience is invaluable for the networking opportunities and alumni connections it provides. It also offers a unique time for MBA students to reflect on and reconsider their career paths.

In reality, every candidate has their own unique needs that align with the format that makes the most sense. Whichever MBA delivery option you choose for your b-school journey, a great fit with your goals and lifestyle will ensure the best results from application to graduation.

Application Essay #1
Who do you admire the most and why? Help us to understand who has played a pivotal role in shaping you to be the person you are or the person you aspire to be. Please provide specific examples of how they have shaped or inspired you. (word limit 300 max)
Through our years of experience with successful MBA candidates, we have witnessed the power of strong, attention-grabbing personal stories. You don’t have to be perfect, but you should be genuine and personal. This set of IESE MBA essays starts with a very personal prompt.

As you describe the person you admire the most, you are describing your values. For example, admiring an accomplished leader demonstrates that leadership is important to you. Or maybe you admire someone who has built a business or foundation from nothing. Whoever you choose to describe, make sure you are specific about the aspects of their story that resonate with you.

Your true character will be revealed as you describe the person you admire most. To help the reader along, describe the person you are or hope to be. Then, explain the aspects of your admired person that have inspired you.

In this time of pivotal change, think about the values you want to convey. Does your admired person work to make the world a better place? Or, maybe they are a strong inspirational leader. Do you see yourself continuing to be as impactful?

Application Essay #2
What are your post-MBA career goals right after graduation and five years after? What kind of resources or opportunities offered by IESE will help you achieve them? (word limit 300 max)
Essay two focuses specifically on your short and long-term career goals and why IESE. The admissions committee can see your resume within the application, so this essay should give the background of who you are and why you have made your choices. Think about one or two pivotal career moments you may want to explore.

Ideally, your experiences have led to a career goal that you can describe clearly in both the short and long term. In other words, be specific. For example, if you want to go into venture capital after graduation, talk about the industry you would like to focus on. Then, discuss what progress you envision after five years in venture capital. Further, if you see yourself starting a fund or becoming an industry leader, describe that path.

Then, you will want to explain why an MBA is your next step. What will you learn in the IESE MBA program to complement your work experiences? Will your classmates and the environment benefit from your expertise? Specific classes and professors are always useful details to add.

Optional Essay
What would you like to highlight about yourself or your journey which may have not been captured in your application? (word limit 300 max)
This optional essay is entirely open-ended and allows you to explain anything additional. Therefore, think about the stories you could tell about your background and questions to describe your journey.

If you focused on your career in the previous questions, this is a great essay to tell a personal story. For example, you could describe your background and motivations that have led to your accomplishments. Or, you could discuss a challenge in your life that has built character and impacted your life journey. Finally, make sure to include specific details to strengthen your story.

Also, to track this essay to the IESE MBA criteria, you could use this space to demonstrate that you have personal drive, an international outlook, and strong values.

Tuesday Tips: Kenan-Flagler Application Essay Tips for 2021-2022 [#permalink]

FROM Stacy Blackman Consulting Blog: Tuesday Tips: Kenan-Flagler Application Essay Tips for 2021-2022

UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School offers a flexible program with multiple ways to earn an MBA. The Kenan-Flagler application essay questions focus on learning more about you. At UNC, a world-class university offers resources beyond the MBA program.

There are several global immersion opportunities with each program at Kenan-Flagler. Also, students love the environment in Chapel Hill. It is a beautiful and lively college town. Further, students enjoy the friendly atmosphere at UNC’s MBA program.

For assistance with your UNC Kenan-Flagler application, contact Stacy Blackman Consulting today. And to learn more about the Kenan-Flagler UNC MBA program, visit the school website.

From the admissions committee: You’ll respond to two required essay questions and one optional question. Your responses should be concise, clear, and introspective as we’ll use them to learn more about you, your motivations, and your aspirations. Typically, we ask that you keep responses to 300-500 words max.

Required Essay 1
Your response should be no longer than 500 words and should address the following questions:
What are your immediate career goals and how will you benefit from earning an MBA at Kenan-Flagler Business School? As the business world continues to evolve, circumstances can change and guide you in a different direction. Should your goals that you provided above not transpire, what other opportunities would you explore?
This first essay in the Kenan-Flagler application asks a primary career goals question and a “Plan B.” Knowing yourself is the best first step in this essay. What has your career taught you, both in hard skills and soft skills? How have leadership opportunities grown your perspective? Think about the experiences of your work life. And what you have learned about yourself.

Then, describe your short-term career goals. As a program, UNC provides individual career guidance and has a recruiter focus. Therefore, realistic career goals help the admissions committee imagine you at UNC. Finally, show a clear link between your career goals and your MBA. What skills will you gain from classes and clubs to bring to your post-MBA job?

Everyone’s life takes twists and turns. And, often, your path takes you in another direction. For that reason, this essay also asks about your Plan B. To answer the question, consider how your experience and MBA can apply to different goals.

For example, your Plan A is to work in consulting and then transition to a strategy role at a CPG firm. If you cannot land that job, you could look for in-house strategy roles to gain experience. Or, you could work in a different kind of professional services firm such as marketing research. Finally, as long as you focus on the type of work that appeals to you and the roles that fit, you will find the right path.

Like most schools, UNC Kenan-Flagler focuses on inclusive leadership. For this essay, consider how your background and communities have shaped your perspective. Then, Once you have an idea of the essay’s focus, consider what specific examples to share.

Tell a story about a time you had a difference in your personal or professional relationships. When you describe the situation, be specific about how you felt and acted. What did you do to resolve the problem and drive understanding? And, what did you learn about other people’s perspectives?

Finally, thoughtful and nuanced leadership is vital to your UNC MBA application. That means showing that you are empathetic and understanding. Even if you are not a leader now, you can positively impact the environment.

Optional Essay

We encourage you to tell us more about who you are so we can get to know you as a person and potential member of the Carolina community. Use this essay to convey information that you may not have otherwise been able to in the application. Your response should be no longer than 200 words.

Optional topics:
  • Personal or professional accomplishments
  • Interests and passions
  • Gaps in work experience or inconsistent academic performance
  • Context for recommender selection
  • A fun fact about yourself
This Kenan-Flagler optional application allows you to either discuss areas of concern or personal topics.

First, identify any gaps in your overall application. Then, consider if you need to explain those gaps. For example, if you do not have the required classes listed, you may have learned the same topics at work. Or consider registering for continuing education classes. Finally, substantial work experience can help offset poor academics. Or, explain that you have taken courses since undergrad and received high grades.

If you do not have any significant resume or application gaps, you can use this essay to focus on a personal topic. Consider describing a noteworthy professional accomplishment. Or, explain a personal achievement of which you are proud. If you tell a personal story, use specific examples to make the story stand out. Consider why the accomplishment was remarkable and what you learned from the experience.

Reapplicant Essay
If you are re-applying to the program, we appreciate your continued interest in UNC Kenan-Flagler. We require a complete application in addition to a brief essay (100 words or less) that describes how your application differs from your previous submission and that alerts us to new test scores, a recent promotion, or other areas that demonstrate how you have strengthened your candidacy.
The Kenan-Flagler application requires re-applicants to complete all of the required essays. You should take 100 words to describe what has changed since your last application. Also, ideas for this essay include updates like a promotion or new job.

If you don’t have a resume change, consider updates like a change in career focus. Or, you may have learned new skills in other ways, such as in a stretch project at work. Overall, this is your chance to show you are a stronger candidate now than last year.

FROM Stacy Blackman Consulting Blog: Bloomberg Businessweek Ranks Best B-Schools for 2021-2022

Bloomberg Businessweek has announced its 2021-2022 ranking of the best business schools in the world. Last year, due to COVID-19, the organization decided to forgo a traditional annual ranking. But a quick comparison between this and the 2019 list shows no change at the very top. Once again, Stanford Graduate School of Business is crowned best in class among U.S. business schools.

What is new this year is the addition of a Diversity Index to the MBA ranking. For the first time, Bloomberg Businessweek measures race, ethnicity, and gender. According to the publication, race and ethnicity count for 50% of the diversity score and gender for the other 50%.

It’s’ worth noting that none of the schools appearing at the top of the main ranking have the same crossover power where diversity is concerned. Stanford GSB ranks 16th, and both Tuck and HBS rank 17th in diversity. The next top-ranked school, Wharton, comes in 24th place.

Bloomberg Businessweek Methodology
Rankings were based on 19,955 surveys from students, alumni, and recruiters, as well as compensation and employment data from each school. U.S. schools also provided data on race, ethnicity, and gender in their classes for the Diversity Index.

Click here to learn more about the Bloomberg Businessweek 2021-2022 MBA rankings.

Our View of Rankings
While rankings can inform your decision of where to apply, applicants would do well to focus more on a program’s culture, size, or the strength of its alumni network. When Stacy Blackman Consulting last surveyed business school applicants to determine what matters most to them and why, fewer than 12% of survey respondents considered culture a top priority. A mere handful believed program content was the most crucial factor influencing the decision to attend a particular business school.

These troubling results indicate people aren’t paying enough attention to the program that’s truly a good fit for them. We’re realists and know that those headed for b-school really can’t help themselves. But, keep in the back of your mind that placing too heavy an emphasis on rankings can become a distraction. Take multiple factors into consideration when making your final school selection.

Tuesday Tips: Kelley School of Business Essays, Tips for 2021-2022 [#permalink]

FROM Stacy Blackman Consulting Blog: Tuesday Tips: Kelley School of Business Essays, Tips for 2021-2022

The Kelley School of Business at Indiana University is a top-tier business school with an innovative program that cultivates strong recruiting relationships with companies. These Kelley School of Business essays focus on understanding you. From the moment you decide to attend Kelley, you will be focusing on your career and leadership development.

For example, even before you start classes, you will be part of an orientation program called Me Inc. to help you refine your career goals. After you start school, you will continue to receive personalized coaching, leadership training, and real-world industry projects.

This will help you focus on the right career path and job openings for your internship and full-time job search. Consider these factors as you prepare your answers to these Kelley School of Business essays.

Kelley’s program is unique and close-knit, so your fit with the program and your desire to participate fully will be vital to the admissions committee. Kelley has an academically strong class of students. A large number (42% of the Class of 2023) come from outside the United States, and the diverse cohort typically includes a significant number of women.

REQUIRED MBA ESSAYS
Essay One: Discuss your immediate post-MBA professional goals. How will your professional experience, when combined with a Kelley MBA degree, allow you to achieve these goals? Should the short-term goals you have identified not materialize, what alternate career paths might you consider? (500 words)
The Kelley School has tailored its curriculum to help you reach your career goals. Therefore, entering Kelley with a career vision will help you take full advantage of the program.

For example, students can immediately specialize by choosing one of the first-year Academies in your industry area of focus. Think about these opportunities at Kelley when you answer this career goals question. Make sure to specify how you see yourself using the tools available.

When you discuss your career experience in this essay, focus on the most critical moments in your career. Avoid reciting your jobs like a resume.

Consider the times when you had to stretch to accomplish the goals set out for you. Maybe that happened when you stepped up to lead or became introspective about your career aspirations. These are the stories that will explain how your professional experience will help you achieve your goals.

The second half of this question deals with your flexibility around your career goal and ability to handle change. Change is constant in most industries, and your ability to recognize opportunity, even outside your anticipated career goals, will be critical to your success. Therefore, think about the core elements essential to you in forming your career goals and how you could achieve them in different career opportunities.

For example, perhaps you are passionate about the food industry and want to update the world of packaged goods. However, you could imagine pursuing either a strategy role or a finance role within consumer packaged goods.

Or, you love marketing but could see yourself either marketing a film or a jewelry line. In this case, the most crucial factor is practicing the craft of marketing. Showing that you can pivot while staying true to your core values and interests will position you well in this set of Kelley School of Business essays.

Essay Two: Please respond to one of the following short essay prompts. (300 words)

My greatest memory is…

I’m most afraid of…

My greatest challenge has been…

I’m most proud of…
While the prior essay focuses on your career path and goals, this essay is about your core personal motivations. Consider, what are the formative moments in your life? In this essay, the story you choose to tell will reveal your personality and values to the admissions committee.

Therefore, think about the moments in your life when you have changed or matured. Was there an experience that led you to learn more about yourself? Or, perhaps you interacted with someone who challenged or inspired you. Another experience might have been traveling outside your comfort zone—either literally outside your home country or in a transition like leaving home for college.

Option b, “I’m most afraid of…” is the one prompt that does not explicitly call on a past experience. However, your fear likely has its roots in a formative moment in your life.

Once you have a story to tell, make sure you explain why this moment is important to you. To clarify, you can narrate your thoughts, reactions, and opinions as you retell the story. Another idea is to take time at the end of the essay to reflect upon what you learned and why it was important.

Essay Three: Share a brief fact about yourself that your classmates would find interesting, surprising, or noteworthy. (25 words)
The admissions committee has read your career goals, read about a pivotal experience, and likely has reviewed your resume and application fact sheet. Make sure what you describe in this Kelley School of Business essay didn’t come up in any of those demographic or background data sheets in your application. Also, choose something short and easy to explain in 25 words.

Perhaps you were a competitive swimmer in high school but didn’t pursue it in college. Or, your grandmother was from Sweden and taught you traditional cooking techniques that no one else in your life knows. Maybe you are heavily involved in a hobby that has impacted your life.

Are you struggling to come up with an unusual or surprising fact? This is a great question to poll friends and family about. Because your friends and family likely know the elements of your background and personality, this can be an effective way to develop a unique story. Those elements are more profound than your resume or application fact sheet.

Optional Essay: Is there anything else you think we should know as we evaluate your application? If you believe your essays and credentials represent you fairly, you shouldn’t feel obligated to answer this question. (300 words)
The last of the Kelley School of Business essays is open-ended. Such a question allows you to add almost any story or additional background data you would like. However, before you take full advantage of the extra space, make sure you are truly adding to your application. If you have done the work on a comprehensive resume, excellent recommendations, and finely-honed essays, you likely don’t need this space.

Finally, if there is anything to explain in your Kelley School of Business essays, use this space to do it. It could be a poor grade in a quantitative course in college, academic probation, or the lack of a recommendation from a current supervisor. In any case, make sure you are focused on explanations rather than excuses. Provide solid, recent evidence that you have done better since the event.
