The author's report on how the social class of buyers influences the success of marketing strategies contained no exact and several imprecise and different definitions of social class.

As per my understanding the use of and or but sets off parallelism in the sentence. The author's report becomes the main stem. POE should be as follows:

(A) contained no exact and several imprecise and different definitions of social class [The author's report contained no exact (what?) _____ and several definitions. Incorrect]

(B) contained no exact but varying imprecise and different definitions of social class [The author's report contained no exact (what?) _____ but varying definitions . Incorrect]

(C) contained no exact definition but several imprecise and different characterizations of social class (The author's report contained no exact definition but several characterizations . Correct)

(D) failed to contain any exact definitions of social class, but varying imprecise and different ones [The author's report failed to contain definitions but varying _____ (One's refers to what?)]

(E) failed to define social class in any exact way but used varying imprecise and different ones [(but varying _____ (One's refers to what?)]

IMO "varying" and "different" are redundant. Hence, C is better than B.

No. "Varying imprecise" distorts the meaning.
If you add the subject- "definitions" to this gerund+adjective- "Varying imprecise", you'd get- "varying imprecise definitions". It should be "several imprecise definitions" instead. By using a gerund "varying", it incorrectly implies that the definitions, though imprecise, are varying. That's not the intended meaning.
(C) is void of any such issues and thus the correct choice.
