Why is option C not a correct choice?

Having gone through the question and your query, we believe we can resolve your doubt.

Option C is incorrect, as within it there is no active verb acting upon the subject "The giant ground sloth"; "having stood twelve feet tall", "weighing nine thousand pounds", and "wielding seven-inch claws" are all present participles ("verb+ing") acting as noun modifiers.

I chose the correct answer but was between B and D in the end.

D def sounds better and seems to have elements in parallel too. While B uses stood then weighing and wielding.

Can you please provide a full and elaborate concept behind elimination of B.

I am not able to make out how it is a run on. Thanks

It stood twelve feet tall, weighed nine thousand pounds, and wielded seven-inch claws, Megatherium americanum was a giant ground sloth that (and?) may have been the largest hunting mammal ever to walk the Earth.

Also usage of 'that' and 'and' is confusing in my version of sentence. Will both be right?

Dear Varane,

Your version would not be correct because you have joined two independent clauses by comma.
It stood twelve feet tall, weighed nine thousand pounds, and wielded seven-inch claws, Megatherium americanum was a giant ground sloth that (and?) may have been the largest hunting mammal ever to walk the Earth.


B is wrong because of modifier issue; whereas "weighing nine thousand pounds" is modifying It, the wielding seven-inch claws is modified Megatherium americanum. What the reason to split if all these modifiers are modifying It = Megatherium americanum ?

(B) It stood twelve feet tall, weighing nine thousand pounds, and wielding seven-inch claws, Megatherium americanum was a giant ground sloth and

Oh so when there is 2 IC without proper connection it's a run on sentence and therefore incorrect ?
