Re: Alex drives to and from work each day along the same route. If he driv [#permalink]
Alex drives to and from work each day along the same route. If he drives at a speed of 80 miles per hour on the way to work and he drives at a speed of 100 miles per hour on the way from work, which of the following most closely approximates his average speed in miles per hour for the round trip?

A. 80.0
B. 88.9
C. 90.0
D. 91.1
E. 100.0
Solution:
Let the distance to be covered 400 miles on the way to walk and
Time to cover the way to walk = 400/80 = 5 hour
Time to cover the way from walk = 400/100 = 4 hour
Total distance = 400 miles + 400 miles = 800 miles
Total Time = 4 hour + 5 hour = 9 hour

Average distance = 800/9 = 88.88 = 88.9(B)
Answer: B

this question can be solved using the concept of LCD, and Average

S1 = 80 Miles/h = 2^4 * 5
S2 = 100 Miles/h = 5^2*2^2

Now LCD of S1, and S2 is 400

So let's assume d= 400
T1 = 400/80 = 5
T2 = 400/100 = 4

So average Speed = Total distance / Total Time

= 800/ (5+4)
=800/9
= 88.9
Hence Answer should be option B.

I just know it is slightly less than 90 so yea B.

Why it is slightly less than 90 and not 90? Because he didn't spend same amount of time. Instead he spent slightly more time at the lower speed. Hence it has to be slightly towards the slower speed side of the equation.
