Great profile! You will definitely be a candidate for Booth. The only thing I would suggest is changing up your career goals. Going into management consulting is not original (and will work against someone like you coming from a competitive demographic) nor something that Booth tends to focus on as it is more of a finance program. What about your long-term goal? It's a fungible but important component of your application.

We would be happy to provide feedback on other programs, but need to know more about your preferences. Do you want to be in Chicago? The US? Do you want a school that focuses on finance or management/strategy/consulting? The logical choice would be to apply to Kellogg as that's also in Chicago and a better fit for your career goals.

You could also look at schools like Duke Fuqua, Yale SOM, Dartmouth Tuck, MIT Sloan, etc. to get you started, but again we need more clarity on your criteria.

Admissionado,

Hi,

Thanks for your feedback. I'm particulary interested in the technology strategy consulting domain and coming to my long-term goal I would like to start my own technology strategy firm.

I'm interested in programs anywhere in the US and also want a school that focuses on Strategy and Consulting but with an emphasis in the technology domain.

Hi,
Adding my profile summary asking for any feedback. Also adding questions below - thanks in advance for your help!

I'm 29, French Citizen, speaking 6 languages fluently (mostly romance languages as well as japanese). I have a BsC in Quant finance from a top 10 European business school (did very poorly just being an irresponsible kid - 3.2 GPA). I also have an MS in analytics from a large US school (Stats, Python SQL, R coding experience - 3.8 GPA).
4 years work experience: 1 year internship at a Fortune50 medical company. 1 year working as a data science analyst for a Big4 consulting firm supporting strategy teams. 2 years at a boutique specialist (healthcare ~100 people) strategy firm working directly with large firm C-suite. Currently a manager of their data team overseeing 3-4 consultants - have PMed large projects with high visibility and foresee strong letters of reference.
I have 2 years of full-time church volunteering experience for my church in Japan (teaching English, teaching about Christianity, translating for local Brazilian congregations etc). I also volunteer doing pro-bono consulting for smaller start ups internationally.

I've taken the GMAT (got 710) but planning to take again soon, aiming for 730+.
I have decent hopes but working in a niche healthcare space and not coming from a large feeder firm.
My interests after graduation are the cross section of AI and healthcare, medical devices and entrepreneurship.

Questions (aside from any profile feedback!)
- What are my chances and what resonates most with Booth admissions?
- In my most recent practice tests I just can't do well in Quant under test conditions for the life of me; currently fluctuating between 55th-75th percentile in Q, but consistently 95th+ percentile in Verbal and 8+/12 in IR (730-740 range). Is this going to be a deal breaker? Given that I do quant modeling all day is that going to offset this issue with my GMAT?

Thanks all!

That is helpful. So, if I were you, I would look at several of the schools I listed in my previous post.

You could also add in Stanford GSB and Wharton (though assume both are a "no"), UC Berkeley Haas, NYU Stern, and Michigan Ross. Those schools all place people well in consulting and have strong technology programs.

I strongly suggest you reach out to us for a free consultation so we can discuss your background, this list and our consulting services in more detail:

See our reply to your Columbia posting for more detailed information. Overall, Columbia and Booth are going to be similar situations in terms of competitiveness, focus on fiannce, location in large cities, recruiting, etc.

The major differences from an Admissions standpoint are that Booth does not offer Early Decision and is not done on a rolling basis, so you have to go by the typical Round 1/2/3 structure.

Again, we're happy to discuss this all with you, so don't hesitate to reach out!

Hey Darshinich,

You have a good GMAT score as well as a strong GPA. To add to this, the experience of working with a Big 4 firm will definitely help add some strong talking points to your profile. Of course, the leadership experience is lacking and we would have liked to see some of that as well. However, it is time now to focus on what we have on the table and make the most of the same.

Your goals are in sync with your profile and while you could definitely look at applying to Booth, one can never be sure with the M7 programs (even with your strongest application in place). Therefore, we would urge you to look at adding a few other US top ~17 programs.

Should you feel the need for a detailed discussion pertaining to your prospects, please get in touch with us.

Good luck!

Hi, Darshinich,

Thank you for your post!

First, I would like to congratulate you on backing a 750 in your GMAT; that's quite an exception, even so at such a young age. Also, you have a good overall GPA, and it seems you would have strong academic stats; hence, I would like you to add more to your statistics since you are from an overrepresented pool of candidates so that we can gauge your actual chances at top B-schools. Coming to your profile, you have an appropriate amount of work experience, and I see you have received leadership awards too. Now, you can bank upon them by elaborating more about your responsibilities, crucial projects assigned, skill-set developed, and obviously, your professional accolades and the impact generated during your diverse tenure. Also, add any detail about international exposure/experience as they are greatly valued at this stage. Also, you should definitely add about your AWS certification, as it would add new horizons for you to start an interesting conversation with the adcom.

Coming to ECAs, it seems most of your relevant work was done during your college/school years. So, I would suggest you add some more relevant volunteering, community work, and even some great hobbies would work. Also, I would like you to elaborate more on the new challenges faced, the leadership role you played, the impact created by you, and a bit more about the overall experience. Moreover, you do have a relevant post-MBA goal; however, you need to define both short-term and long-term goals and convince the admission committee that your future goals are relevant and bring about Collinearity in your post-MBA goals.

Overall you do have a competitive profile and do have a chance at Booth. However, as you are still quite young, you must be extremely clear on how an MBA can help you reach your goals and mention your motivation/driving force, your aspirations, and finally, why you think it's a good choice for you to go for an MBA now and you have relevant skills to be successful! If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further help you with shortlisting MBA programs; feel free to book a free session with us at your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi, tgubbay1,

Thank you for your post!

First of all, I would like to say you did well, backing a 710 in your GMAT; that's quite great. Moreover, if you could score 730+ in your retake, that would give an unimaginable boost to your profile. Also, you have a good overall GPA, and it would help if you added more academic statistics to your profile apart from your GPA.

Coming to your profile, you have an appropriate amount of work experience and, I guess, a lot of good examples of leadership. Moreover, since you are from a medical background and your post-mba goals are in healthcare, I recommend that you go through our article on Top Programs for MBA in Healthcare Management, this would most certainly help provide insights about how to approach your MBA application with a healthcare background. Also, I see you had a short stint outside healthcare too. So, it would be very important for you to give strong reasons why you think it was a good time for you to switch and why you switched back? I suggest you go through our article on How you can justify your career switch to pursue an MBA for a career change!, this would most certainly help provide insights and help you jot down the pros and cons of making a career switch. Also, you should definitely add about any certifications or additional courses, as it would add new horizons for you to start an interesting conversation with the adcom. About ECAs, you have some diverse and quite unique ones, which could be very well used in your essays to add additional points to your profile. I would also like you to elaborate more on the new challenges faced, the leadership role you played, the impact created by you, and a bit more about the overall experience.

Coming to your questions, Booth prefers candidates who demonstrate intellectual curiosity while demonstrating personal maturity and leadership qualities and have competitive scores. GMAT is just a test to gauge the skills required for an MBA; if you do have enough practical examples about your skill-set, that's more than enough to convince the adcom that it was nothing but just a bad day! Overall you do have a competitive profile, and you do have a relevant post-MBA goal; however, you need to define both short-term and long-term goals and convince the admission committee that your future goals are relevant and bring about Collinearity in your post-MBA goals. That's all for now, If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further help you with shortlisting MBA programs; feel free to book a free session with us at your convenience.

I'd want to point out that you have a relevant work experience profile and that you did an excellent job of elaborating on each area of your work experience. In terms of your profile, you have a solid overall CGPA, but your GMAT score is low for top MBA programmes. As a result, aiming for a score of 740 or higher will help you secure a position in top MBA programmes.

Furthermore, I'd like to know your opinion on an executive MBA, as it appears to be a good fit for your situation. You have a lot of relevant job experience and would be an excellent EMBA applicant. Furthermore, with experience in such a wide range of fields, you'll have plenty of leadership examples to draw on.
Also, I believe you still have a lot of work to do on the ECA front - you need to include examples of leadership and startup exposure, as well as the obstacles you overcame and the effect you had, as well as focus on enhancing and adding relevant honours. Additionally, work on connecting your experience to your post-MBA aspirations, since you'll need to persuade the admissions committee that your future goals are relevant and aligned with your previous experience! Overall, you have a relevant profile; nevertheless, you should work on improving your ECAs, which will help you bring more diversity to your application.

If you would like, we can help you with essays and SOPs and other application processes.

Hello!
Please let me know what you think of my chances (or if it even makes sense) -

Background: Indian (Should get my Canadian Passport this year)

Education: Bachelors in Science (Biochemistry) - 70% average of 3 years. Realized then that investments & finance is what I like. Obtained Masters in Investment & Financial Analysis (basically self-taught) while working full time - 60%

GMAT: 660 (paid & booked exams, but lost motivation a month before exams. Decided to go write exams as I had nothing better to do that day). Preparing diligently now, targeting 740+

Work Experience: Overall ~11 years (before you recommend Exec. MBA, hear me out).
I love crunching numbers, so cracked entrance exam for a govt. bank and joined it right after completing bachelors (didn't know how to write a cheque on my first day at work :P). Self-taught banking (and finance and pretty much everything else required to do the job), and was promoted to credit analyst within a year of starting work. Worked there for 3 more years, obtained my masters degree while working, leveraged it and jumped ship to a private sector bank in same role (basically traded job security for better pay, stability and challenge). Worked there for 2Y8M, got Permanent Residency for Canada so decided to quit the job and make the move.

After coming to Canada, started working as a Financial Advisor managing investments for retail clients (still at it after ~4 years). That got fascinated with capital markets and decided to improve my skills & knowledge - realized that I needed CFA. Got my CFA charter last August (no redos were required, thank God!)

Post MBA Goals:
Short Term Goal - I have worked most of my life in retail banking, and I have come to realize that its not fulfilling (at least for me). The idea is to change careers and enter into Asset Management - leverage both CFA & MBA (and my passion for investing), starting as a research analyst for a buy-side shop (mutual fund/pension etc.). CFA gave the theoretical knowledge, MBA will provide the practical experience with oversight (hence targeting MBA schools with strong finance offerings). My life has changed drastically after coming to Canada, and I have to come to recognize my dream (and shortcomings that I need to work on to realize that dream), Exec. MBA will not plug those gaps.

Long Term Goal - Portfolio Manager with an asset management firm, and some day open my own boutique shop.

Recommendations - Can obtain one from my current manager (she acknowledges my ambition, and supports it - I hope)

Extracurriculars - Used to play sports in school and college, but not much after that.

Thanks!

Hello spite, I must say you have quite a journey, Now let’s talk about your profile.
GPA : Can you please convert your percentage to GPA so I have a better understanding
GMAT : The current requirement of GMAT in Chicago Booth is 727 and your current scores are pretty low. I would suggest you give your GMAT one more time but this time without losing motivation.
You can have the world’s best application and recommendations but it will all be a waste if you aren’t even eligible to apply.
I strongly recommend you give your GMAT again and aim to score 700+

Work Experience : Your work experience is pretty decent. You being a CFA candidate definitely vouches for how much you want to pursue MBA.
Extracurricular : You didn’t mention much of this. Don’t take this parameter lightly. You must tell all your achievements and skills in your SOP.

As you are adamant about pursuing MBA, I would say you have a pretty decent profile.
You just lag in one parameter, your GMAT. Ace this and you will definitely get into your dream school.

Also, you need to make sure that you make an excellent application that showcases all good aspects of your profile. An otherwise excellent profile can get rejected because of lack of proper presentation of profile strengths.

If you would like, we can help you with essays and SOPs and other application processes.

We have helped over 5000 students get admit into their dream schools.

You seem to be a promising individual given you have quite a few accolades to your name at an early phase in your career. But at the same time, I am not able to pinpoint a strong differentiating factor in your profile. Therefore you must present a strong standing in all aspects highlighting your leadership experience, professional growth, incremental responsibilities with every project, strong social impact leadership experience, and thorough research on goals to make it hard for the schools to reject you. Also, reflect on your formative years and the influences that shaped your personality. Identifying the not-so-impressive aspects and working around those shortcomings will take you a long way. I would suggest adding some more from the top 15 programs to hedge your risks.

Post MBA goals are too generic. Your long-term goal might be to have your own technology strategy company but what is the thought process behind this goal? What problems have you encountered in your experience so far that make you think you would like to solve those problems in the long term but you need to have a strong brand association through MBA and consulting? How about you associate your long-term vision with the problems you have seen through your social volunteering experience? Consider making your goals aspirational but also inspirational at the same time.
Have a well-deliberated Plan B in place as Plan A of consulting and long-term boutique strategy firm will most likely not impress the adcom.

Feel free to connect should you need guidance.

Best wishes

Hi Foreheadson hope this finds you in good health

Several things seem to favor your candidacy namely the long and differentiated work experience in finance and logistics and academic arc and CFA charter. I feel a lot would depend on how you present your personal and professional narrative. Needless to say, you must show a thorough understanding of the professional path you wish to pursue post MBA. If you have no prior professional connections in the USA you need to start engaging actively with potential recruiters, career teams from B schools, and alumni who have followed a similar trajectory as you. Doing the foundational work now would show in your application and put you in a strong position during the interviews. Also reflect on your long-term objective and gather insights on how easy it is for you to transition into IB and PE in the US post MBA.

Best wishes

Hi, Foreheadson,

Thank you for your post!

Starting with the stats, you did well in backing a 720 in your GMAT. Moreover, being from a finance background highlights your expertise in the quant section. Also, you have a good overall GPA, and it would help if you added more academic statistics to your profile apart from your GPA. Coming to your profile, you have much relevant work experience, and I guess you won't be short of stellar examples of leadership. Second, I would say that Executive-MBA programs are more suited to your profile as you have much experience and would bring a lot to the table. Hence, for your reference, I suggest you go through our article on Top Executive MBA Programs, this would most certainly help provide insights and help you understand the EMBA curriculum. These one-year programs are meant to prepare an elite group of senior professionals like you with 8-18 years of work experience and 5-10 years of managing expertise. If you are looking for Executive full-time MBA programs, LBS, Sloan, Stanford MSx, MIT, and Sloan Fellows, are some excellent choices. Also, I would suggest elaborating on your crucial projects, skill-set developed, professional accolades, the impact generated during your diverse tenure, and adding details about international exposure/experience as they are greatly valued at this stage. Also, you should definitely add about your CFA certification, as it would add new horizons for you to start an interesting conversation with the adcom.

Coming to ECAs, it seems most of your relevant work is somehow related to your work only. So, I would suggest you add some more relevant volunteering, community work, and even some great hobbies would work. Also, I would like you to elaborate more on the new challenges faced, the leadership role you played, the impact created by you, and a bit more about the overall experience. Moreover, you do have a relevant post-MBA goal; all you need to do is convince the admission committee that your future goals are relevant and bring about Collinearity in your post-MBA goals.

Overall you have a competitive profile and have a good shot at Booth. You can also have schools like Kellogg, Tepper, CBS, MIT, and Yale on your list. However, I would like you to be extremely clear on how an MBA can help you reach your goals and mention your motivation/driving force, your aspirations, and finally, why you think it's a good choice for you to go for an MBA now! If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further help you with shortlisting both MBA and EMBA programs; feel free to book a free session with us at your convenience.

Cheers!

The good think is that you are likely underrepresented, but no sure if that will continue to be the case with the great resignation situation there. I definitely think you should apply this year if you have IB as your goal. I like that you have a CFA; that will provide a competitive advantage with IB.

My concern with risk management in commercial banking is – will you have a resume that has some good quantifiable achievements? Or can you quantify what losses you helped to prevent? Put serious thought into the problems you solved and value you added, and how that can be communicated. I do like that you have deep people management experience and feel you should reflect on the lessons and learnings you have achieved in that domain.

Focus on schools that have applications/essays that allow you to showcase your strengths in this area. Even though its not top of mind for IB, you might consider Kellogg because it allows you to show these things, on top of CBS, Booth, etc.

ECs are good; can you show how those you have helped mentor passed vs those who didn’t, for the CFA mentoring? Expand on the ECs in the CBS online application responses, this will help bring you to life and show who you are as a person. (work ex on its own might not be enough for us to feel you as a whole person; develop that emotional connection with adcom)

This is a helpful resource – https://menlocoaching.com/top-mba-programs/investment-banking-industry-report/ would recommend you apply to some reach schools but also schools that are strong in IB recruitment where your GMAT is at or above the average such as Duke or Darden.

Reach out if you would like me to take a peek at your CV .
