We can eliminate (D) & (E) becasue of 'results'.
'Proper diet' is better than 'eating properly'.
'dieting' and 'eating properly' do not mean same. Can eliminate (C)

So, the answer is (B)

i will go with D

the sentence is in present tense and the tense has to be maintained. Tells parallels with Results and not Resulted.

any thoughts guys

D is incorrect.

a and b result NOT a and b results. ("and" pluralizes the subject - Manhattan SC)

that leaves C with dieting considered as a noun.

the OA is D, however can someone please explain the SV agreement , why it's results and not result ?

I would say C is least worst.

(A) eating properly will result - wordy
(B) proper diet resulted - wrong verb tense
(C) dieting will result - hmm...Ok
(D) proper diet results - singular verb used. WRONG
(E) eating properly results- singular verb used. WRONG

D is correct. Sometimes two very closely related items joined by "and" are treated as one single phrase and needs a singular verb. Consult any grammar book for more examples.

I will go with D for the swagata's reasoning...

but how to identify such problems in GMAT? here C can be eliminated as dieting can not be considered as proper eating...

See the words like "common knowledge", "tells"

Simple present tense is needed here.

"Will result" in C indicates some sense of definiteness. I doubt whether we can have that meaning here.

Universal truths are always conveyed in simple present tense. "Common knowledge" can be considered universal truth

On the basis of this rule, we can eliminate A, B, C

To maintain //ism with "sensible exercise" we need to have a noun form in the option. E is eliminated as it contains a verb form " eating properly".

By POE, D is the answer.

Swagatalakshmi's explanation is also appropriate.

Hi

Can anybody plese clarify how the verb take singular form when two things joined using and?

The answer D can be selected, as diet cannot replace proper eating..

Tricky one.

Common knowledge tells us that sensible exercise and eating properly will result in better health.
(A) eating properly will result--wrong place or wrong modifier
(B) proper diet resulted--wrong tense
(C) dieting will result--weird, but I have no choice. Can anybody tell me whether "dieting" is right usage? I can not find it in my dictionary...
(D) proper diet results--result
(E) eating properly results--same as A

I would pick D. Not because it seems right, but because it seems least wrong.
That's how I'd explain results: sensible exercise and proper diet only taken together, only hand in hand results in better health. Sensible exercise alone, or proper diet alone does not result in better health.
The same would be "Drinking and driving ruins thousands of lifes every year". Drinking + driving, is one stupid action and that one action ruins lifes, but drinking alone, or driving alone does not ruin... (well, most of the time).
Anyway, what's the OA?
