Re: Verbal Question of the Day Chat Group [#permalink]
Ever since a major government scam was exposed to the public by the media three months ago, government irregularities, however small, have kept surfacing at regular intervals. The government officials assert that the attention given by the media to government affairs has gone up and hence, the media is reporting irregularities that have legitimate explanations and would have gone unnoticed otherwise. Thus, it is the media’s over attention to government affairs that is resulting in high irregularity reports, and these are certainly no inexplicable irregularities, the officials maintain.

Which one of the following, if true, would seriously weaken the assertions of the government officials?

A. The media has been scrutinizing the government not only for irregularities and scams but also for its administrative performance.

B. The media is not qualified enough to comment on many of the irregularities because the media lacks comprehensive knowledge of the government records.

C. The government officials have been nonetheless critical of the media attacks on all irregularities pointed out including the recent government scam.

D. The media often tries to project small issues in a big way in order to obtain high viewership.

E. The latest media report indicates that the number of irregularities has actually gone down over the past three months.

Q1. Heavy weight lifting was for long considered the most effective muscle-building exercise. However, through recent studies conducted in hundred gymnasiums across the state where most amateur bodybuilders workout, it was found that well above eighty percent of heavy weight lifters suffered from serious damage to their muscles during their workouts. B. Many of the amateurs who suffered muscle damage during heavy weight lifting workouts were first-time heavy weight lifters.
C. Heavy weight lifting workouts, when carried under expert guidance, are more effective and safer than when undertaken without guidance by amateurs.
D. Among the amateurs who engaged in heavy weight lifting, only those with a history of injuries suffered muscle damage.

Q2. As a Christmas bounty, the city council of Granara decided to provide all Granara residents free intercom service in order to reduce their expenses on telephone bills. Every person in the town applauded the announcement because it was evident that every household would be benefited from this move. However, when the plan came to implementation, people were found hesitant in paying the required $100 one-time fee for the same. “The telephone bill every household would save in three months was enough to justify $100, yet it is not clear why people are not signing up”, the Mayor said in a review meeting on the project.

Which one of the following, if true, most helps to explain the residents’ hesitation to sign up while simultaneously believing in the benefits of the scheme?

A. Cheap mobile phone connection plans for long distance calls were round the corner and everyone was waiting for them.

B. The intercom would benefit people only when everyone in the town had a connection, and people were skeptical about everyone signing up.

C. The same telecom companies that provided private telephone connections to residents would build the intercom network.

D. The intercom network did not include the offices outside town where some of the residents worked.

E. People believe that $100 was worth their savings in telephone bills of six months, and not three months as the Mayor believed.

(B) The new police patrolling program has been able to bring the crime rate down in the city.
(C) The price of the burglar alarms has remained steady over the duration of this study.

Q2. Wildlife researchers recently presented a study that states that uncut house lawn grass resembles the natural habitat of snakes. Further, they suggested that snakes are attracted to uncut lawns if the grass grows more than 6 inches. For that reason, they concluded that people should mow their lawns before the grass grows taller than 6 inches.

Which one of the following, if true, would most weaken the conclusion above?

A. Many species of snakes are known to thrive in deserts where there is hardly any grass for habitat.

B. It is an accepted fact that the moisture content in grass has a greater impact than the length of the grass in determining whether the grass resembles the natural habitat of snakes.

C. The researchers found that among lawns that resembled the natural habitat of snakes, the incidence of snake presence was no higher in the uncut lawns than among the cut lawns.

D. The researchers found that grass in lawns in rural areas grew twice as fast as grass in lawns in urban areas.

E. The researchers found that, after grass grows taller than 8 inches, the length of grass does not increase the risk of snakes.

Which of the following most logically completes the argument?

The title page of a book printed in 1955 bears a handwritten quotation from an eleventh -century Anglo-Saxon treaty below which appears the date October 1956 and the name of the scholar Nelson Mb. Only two manuscripts of the treaty existed in 1956, and a printed version was not published until 1968. Although it is conceivable that Nelson saw one of the two manuscripts, it is more probable that the title-page inscription is a forgery, since __________.

A. Nelson Mb is known to have used several different styles in writing his signature

B. Nelson Mb died not long after the publication of the printed edition of the treaty

C. Nelson Mb was one of relatively few people who could still read Anglo-Saxon in the 1900s

D. the printed edition of the treaty was based on only one of the two manuscripts, the other having been known to very few scholars before 1968

E. the quotation follows exactly the spelling of the printed edition, which contains errors introduced by the printer.

Q1. Prior to the new police patrolling program, which requires police cars to patrol various areas of the city every hour, the sale of burglar alarms in the city was high. However, since the new program has been initiated, people are no longer buying those expensive equipments. Clearly, the people in the city are feeling a lot safer.

The argument above is based on which of the following assumptions?

(A) The number of households in the city has remained the same over the duration of this study.
(B) The new police patrolling program has been able to bring the crime rate down in the city.
(C) The price of the burglar alarms has remained steady over the duration of this study.
(D) The performance of the burglar alarms has not impacted the sale of these alarms.
(E) People’s buying behavior of safety equipments is a reasonable indication of the degree to which they feel safe in their city.

CR Questions December - 3 :

Q1. Journalist: Recent studies have demonstrated that a regular smoker who has just smoked a cigarette will typically display significantly better short-term memory skills than a nonsmoker, whether or not the nonsmoker has also just smoked a cigarette for the purposes of the study. Moreover, the majority of those smokers who exhibit this superiority in short term memory skills will do so for at least eight hours after having last smoked.

If the journalist’s statements are true, then each of the following could be true EXCEPT:

(A) The short-term memory skills exhibited by a nonsmoker who has just smoked a cigarette are usually substantially worse than the short term memory skills exhibited by a nonsmoker who has not recently smoked a cigarette

(B) The short-term memory skills exhibited by a nonsmoker who has just smoked a cigarette are typically superior to those exhibited by a regular smoker who has just smoked a cigarette

(C) The short-term memory skills exhibited by a nonsmoker who has just smoked a cigarette are typically superior to those exhibited by a regular smoker who has not smoked for more than eight hours

(D) A regular smoker who, immediately after smoking a cigarette, exhibits short-term memory skills no better than those typically exhibited by a nonsmoker is nevertheless likely to exhibit superior short-term memory skills in the hours following a period of heavy smoking

(E) The short-term memory skills exhibited by a regular smoker who last smoked a cigarette five hours ago are typically superior to those exhibited by a regular smoker who has just smoked a cigarette

Q2. If one has recently been overwhelmed by overstimulation, peaceful rest feels pleasant by contrast. Similarly, recent experience of boredom makes most forms of excitement pleasurable, even dangerous ones. No level of stimulation is intrinsically pleasant or unpleasant.

The statements above, if true, most strongly support which one of the following?
(A) Danger generally appears more pleasurable than boredom.
(B) How pleasant a person finds a situation can depend on previous levels of stimulation.
(C) Boredom can be just as overwhelming as overstimulation.
(D) A high level of stimulation is never pleasant, but it often precedes pleasant relaxation.
(E) One cannot experience pleasure without first experiencing boredom.
