I'm planning to apply for MBA admission into the fall 08 programs. In the meantime I've recently got an excellent project management opportunity with a client that I've been working with for the past year or so.

However, my worry is that will it be looked at negatively if I join one of my client companies? Is it in any way considered unethical? Do the consulting companies view this as a negative thing?

The great thing about this is that the client is aware that I'm planning to go for MBA next year and is willing to support by giving recos etc...

I dont see a problem as long as you transition gracefully and as long as you honour any non-hire agreements/contracts between your client and employer.
Most employers draw up such agreements with their clients to limit attrition. A colleague was once offered a job by his client but he turned it down because he would have had to burn a lot of bridges.

Ask yourself if you can still get meaningful recommendations if leave your current employer?

Getting recos should not be a problem. I've been working with the client manager for the last 1 year. So he will be able to include that experience as well as my newer experiences after I join the client in the recos. The client manager has already provided me one reco and is willing to provide more....

I personally would take the job. It just shows what a professional consultant you were if a client offered you a job....

I agree with Lorenzino. However, I would try to make sure I would be getting one reco from the new job and one from the previous one, so I would not want to burn any bridges. Ideally, the recos would be from your current boss (at the time of application) and your previous boss. If that's not possible you could always get 2 recos from the new job, but that may be less than optimal.

and I agree with lepium... if you show that you can still get a reco from your previous boss then there's no reason whatsoever this could be perceived as a bad thing :)
