The average age of the 50 members of a certain health club is 36 years . The club has a 20 person yoga class and the people in it have an average age of 32 years. What is the average age of the club members not in yoga class.

(A) 34 Years 5 Months
(B) 37 Years 9 Months
(C) 38 Years
(D) 38 Years 8 Months
(E) 40 Years

Explain your answer


It is D.

total age of club members not in yoga class=36*50-32*20=1160 years
Therefore, average age= 1160/30=38 years 8 months (2/3 years)

My two cents -

sum of ages in the club:

50*36 = 1,800

sum of ages in yoga class:

20*32 = 640

The club members not in yoga class:

(1800-640)/(50-20) = 1160/30 = 38 years and 8 months.

the answer is (D)
