Re: Brutal SC # 2 [#permalink]
I will stick with A. This is a most parallel construction. I don't see anything wrong with this one.

D.

It makes the most sense to pay off the debt with money.... So that limits it to D and E. I will go with D because it seems the most concise.

Nevermind. I think E makes the most sense here using the context of the original sentence.

I pick C for parallelism.
A and D use singular-company's.

What is OA

A. by using the company's earnings and to profit --"company's" is the possessive of a singular, we need possessive of a plural for parallelism. "pay off+by" sounds ackward
B. by using the companies' earnings and by profiting
C. using the companies' earnings and profiting
D. with the company's earnings, profiting
E. with the companies' earnings and to profit - this does not have that issue. Correct answer

Re: Brutal SC # 2 [#permalink]
there is a parallel to X and (to) Y construction in the sentence. The correct choice should maintain parallelism by using 'to profit'. This leaves us choices A and E. The 'by using' in A seems unnecessary. I'd say E.

Re: Brutal SC # 2 [#permalink]
Okay, heres my explanation for E. "Hoping to pay off the debt by using the company's earnings" is like saying I hope to pay my credit card bill by using this month's pay check. You pay of something with something.

Same problem with C. You pay off something with something. Besides, C is not parallel. Profiting is not parallel to "to buy".

Okay between D and E, I chose E because D suggests that they are paying off the debt and profiting simultaneously. It does not work simply because of the context of the setnence. The sentence says the investors hope to profit LATER, therefore "profiting" is incorrect.

Hope this makes sense.

(A) In a leveraged buyout, investors borrow huge sums of money to buy companies, hoping to pay off the debt by using the company's earnings and to profit richly by the later resale of the companies or their divisions. - "to pay off" and "to profit" is parallel, "company's" is the possessive of a singular, we need possessive of a plural for parallelism. "pay off+by" sounds ackward

(E) In a leveraged buyout, investors borrow huge sums of money to buy companies, hoping to pay off the debt with the companies' earnings and to profit richly by the later resale of the companies or their divisions. - All "blues" should agree and they do!

Re: Brutal SC # 2 [#permalink]
It got to be between A and E.

to pay off......and to profit..satisified the llsm.

Now between A and E, answe is E becuase usage of companies'e earning is correct.

ANSWER is E.
