Please evaluate my chances!
I intend to apply in R1 to HBS, Stanford GSB, Chicago GSB and Wharton as a college senior from India. Open to deferred admission.
As a StartingBloc Fellow, I can be considered for early deferred admissions to MBA programs at MIT Sloan and Duke Fuqua (Application: next March). This is my fallback incase the earlier applications are not successful.
Profile:
-Age: 21
-Interest at the intersection of economics, business and development
-StartingBloc Fellowship – Only undergraduate student from India selected as one of 96 young leaders from 25 countries to become a StartingBloc Fellow, and to participate in the Summer 2007 Global Institute for Social Innovation at London Business School. StartingBloc, created in partnership with MIT Sloan School of Management is the first and only U.S.A. based 501c3 to educate youth on corporate social responsibility and social entrepreneurship. [Using this experience in my essays to explain dealing with culture shock, and contributing to a diverse class with much older participants]
-(Internship at MIT start-up working to improve the quality of education at a grassroots level in India): Worked closely with CEO on a business case that aims at positively impacting lives of 3.5 million children. Participated in strategy meeting with 10 Ashoka Fellows; Wrote development related articles and 2 papers on private enterprise in education - one accepted by MIT journal; hope to have the second (on education data from microfinance clients) accepted before appln. Managed application for an international business plan competition. Currently leading a university initiative across four premier Indian universities.
[I will soon begin work on a paper on the role on public-private partnership in education for the Government of India. Really not sure how to bring this into the application]
-World Resources Institute: Staff Writer - Only undergraduate and only Asian contributor to blog, documenting and analyzing success stories of sustainable business models aimed at the world's poorest citizens (7 months) [I got this opportunity of my own initiative - I believe that a person in India is well placed to provide a firsthand perspective on green enterprise]
-Sun Microsystems (7 months) – Campus Ambassador for my university. Responsible for propagating open source technologies among peers and faculty.
-Family owned HR consulting firm (6 yrs; informal). Early exposure to entrepreneurship and startup environment. Provided marketing material, web site design and participated in strategic decisions
-Elected by peers as Class Representative & Member - Students Union for two consecutive years in 2006-07, 2007-08.
-Essay on micro-financiers partnering for financial literacy adjudged amongst best in India by a leading Indian B School
-Founded Students Club for Grassroots Innovation with National Innovation Foundation at my univ. to provide engineering students an opportunity to use their skills for social impact
-National Talent Search Scholar at state level
-By application deadline, will have helped frame fund raising document for an HBS education non-profit. This could help them in their aim of raising $1m over the next few years - to set up schools for poor communities.
Engineering - GPA: 8.25 on 10; GMAT in end Sep (expect to score around 710-730)
collegesenior,
Well, I think your chances look good even at HBS and Stanford. You are the kind of outstanding young applicant that all top schools will make the work-experience exception for. Keep doing what you're doing. Even if you get dinged you'll only be stronger the next time around.
Good luck,
