I have been working in a very high-placed role in the govt, IT field, for about 8 years now. I am preparing to take the GMAT. My gpa for my undergrad is 3.4 but I did poorly in my math classes.

I had a very rough time through college, and my poor grades were a reflection of my inability to spend time studying. I plan on addressing this in my essays. I had a lot of family related things to deal with and as a result, I was never able to put my all into my studies. In high school, I was an A student.

I am wondering what I should do? Assuming I get a high score on the GMAT, and given my excellent work exp. plus good extra cirruc. activities, do i stand a chance to be accepted into a top 10 program?

i know many other factors are involved, but im just looking to get a general idea. Will my poor grades in the math classes hold me back from acceptance into a top 10? should i (although i prefer not to) redo those math classes and then apply?

any advice is greatly appreciated. thank you guys and girls in advance,

A lot of the answer could depend on your GMAT. If you score a very high Quant score on the GMAT, schools will not be as concerned with your undergrad math grades. If you score poorly again on Quant, then that might raise some concerns. But, your gpa is good, and it seems like your work experience is good. I don't think you would be red flagged unless your math courses are all D's and F's. Just my opinion.

Nope, if you kick ass on the quant of the gmat, you should be fine and dandy. Did I just say fine and dandy? You'll be good to go.

How do you define top 10?

I don't define top 10 schools - I leave that to Forbes and Business Week :lol:

As for my math grades, it's basically like a C average.

I got a B in one, a a few C's and 1 D. 1 F although I retook it and got a C-. Very bad grades, but in all other classes I did well, nothing lower than a B. I have taken pre calc, cal 1 through 3, linear algebra, discrete math as well as statistics.

I am going to dropkick the GMAT Quant section. That is my game plan ;]

Thank you guys for your quick replies. Studying for the GMAT, this has always been in the back of my mind and getting me nervous, but now I am at least a little assured that I still have a chance w/o having to retake those courses.

You're also 8+ years removed from undergrad, so gpa will count a little less.

Also, when you write your essays, try not to sound like your whining or making excuses. Just state the facts, explain it and move on.

Thank you for the advice on the essays. I'm def. going to be doing a lot of research into essays that have "worked" - you know all those books available on amazon - without turning it into a typical 'canned' paper. l0l

If you are applying next year you can probably get some essays that worked for people on here this year. I know I had a couple crappy grades during fresh/sophomore year. I explained why and then pointed out other classes I took that were along the same lines but even more difficult junior and senior year.

Having an above avg gmat is going to help too. Aim for a 48+ on quant.

One last question - does it matter what your undergrad was in? Meaning, obviously if you have a BS, you will be considered, but is the same consideration given to students with a BA degree?

i dont think there is any discrimination against BA's. it is just another element of your academic background, and only matters insomuch the diversity viewpoint

I do think that there may be a weighting factor for different majors. An electrical engineer with a 3.2 will most likely be looked at far more favorably than a liberal arts major. Just the way peoples minds work.

^ this is exactly what I was thinking. I have a BA in English and minors in both Math and Comp Sci. This is why I was just wondering............
