Sometimes, people need a reality check. I certainly do at times. I read a post last night from someone that their 690 GMAT score was mediocre/poor and that they would put off apps until they broke 700. When I read this, I just shook my head. Poor guy is pathetically scared about not getting in because of 10 points. That's very sad to see someone so completely lemon-aide brainwashed.
I can see 650 as mediocre or poor, but not 690. Even a mediocre or lower score is sometimes sufficient. Here are just a few people within the last month that can testify that a mediocre to low GMAT score is not a death sentence when considering applying to a top 10 Business School.
Keep your head high guys. There is hope. There is always hope! - Dave

600 gmat just got interview invites from yale and cornell. Already done Columbia and wharton interviews. NYU upcoming. Still waiting on some other schools. best of luck to all. BuddyBuruku 2/28/06
Here you go. I got a 650 (44 Q 35 V), just got into Columbia, and interviewing at Wharton next week. 5yrs work experience in the military, 27 years old male from Jersey. I thought I would be out of it with my GMAT score going in, but so far so good. Keep hope alive. Bigtonn 2/15/06
I scored 600 with a dismal quant score, I had good marks in stats and calc in undergrad and made sure to mention it in essays. Now I'm not applying to top 10 schools, but I feel I got into really good programs. Maybe I underestimated myself because I wasn't rejected anywhere. I consider mine a success story. Acceptances to Wake Forest, Vanderbuilt, Tulane, Rice, Boston University. Auryan00 2/14/06
I would also categorize myself under the "bad standardized test taker" category. After dismal scores of 580 twice by self-study, I broke down and took a class. My third attempt with my class training gained me a whopping 20 points, 600 (43Q, 30V). I was pretty bummed...however I picked myself up and took the test again 2 weeks later and scored a 670 (42Q,40V). So far I am in at Georgetown and USC, waitlisted at NYU and interviewed at Yale...so trust me, there is hope!!! Uclandru 2/14/06
I scored in the mid to high 600s and have been accepted to 3 top ten schools, am still waiting back on a few others I applied to but I'm very hopefull. My warning with a low gmat score is Columbia and Wharton are GMAT whores and will drop you if the only thing that isn't perfect is your gmat score.... Westcoaster 2/5/06
Hello, I have a low gmat score low mid 600's. Accepted at Kellogg, waitlisted at Columbia and Berkeley. I really want to go to Columbia so I am pursuing that now... hope I can get in! So hang in there... there is hope. Riddhi 2/5/06
If by low you mean not breaking the 700 barrier, I am definitely in that boat but what I have been told again and again is that its not ONLY about the numbers so please dont worry, as long as ur application is packaged well you'll be fine. I got into Sloan and also interviewed with 2 other top 5 schools and am waiting on their response now. So dont think its make or break and just make everything else that you can control in your application as good as you can. Hope this helps. Tsa79 2/6/06
I graduated already. Class of 2004. 600 GMAT and 3.9 undergrad GPA. Got into HBS. Accepted at NYU. Dinged by three other schools. Whatsupdoc 2/13/06
I got a 650 (q-58%, v-90%, writing-6.0) which I don't really consider low, but not as high as I would have liked considering I don't have a strong math background. Dinged at Yale, Accepted to UVA and Cornell. Aklep613 3/7/06
I got 640, just accepted at UCLA, IESE and have MIT interview in two weeks. I must say I put a LOT of time into the essays but if you manage to sell yourself in a complete way you WILL get in!!!!! ababatz 3/7/06

I think quite often most of us take the GMAT very seriously. But to some of us we are just not good at this standardized test, right ? I, too, know the impact of high GMAT score as it does offer higher competitive advantage to the applicant while other things being equaled. But after 10 attempts I still could only manage a 640. And it was the highest after those 10 attempts. Well as for success stories: I've been accepted at Duke and Emory (with $$), interviewed with Wharton. Waiting to hear from H,S,K and Berkeley. Low 600's on the GMAT with interviews at S/H/W. I am waiting to hear back from most schools, but I have 2 acceptance letters and 1 ding from businessweek top 50 programs. I spent 7 months writing passionate essays, and got interviews everywhere. It can be done with a low gmat. Sph123 3/8/06

I'm excited that I can contribute to this.... Got a 610 the first time I took the test. Got 580's the second and third times. Just found out I got into Carnegie Mellon! What may have helped me is that I have worked at a Fortune 10 compnay for five years, I lived oversees for five years as a teenager, and I am VERY involved in extracurricular activites. Acs1 3/13/06
