Re: The great Laptop discussion forum [#permalink]
I was pretty much set on x61 when R.E.D. put me out of countenance with info about a 14' widescreen t61 with integrated cd/dvd-rom. The agony of choice was resolved quite simply: on Fri, when I came home I weighed my working 14' widescreen Dell D620 and it turned out to be 5.4 lbs, just 0.4 lbs over Lenovo. I immediately knew that a t61 would be too heavy for me. So, yesterday I ordered my x61. Hope it will work out well.

after looking at the X300 again, I'm tempted to get that or wait until the X200 come out... if it has integrated DVD and a regular hard drive (i.e. cheaper), then it's a winner... the wait is killing me. :(

I had a T61 and sold it to buy my x61. You'll love it.

how often are laptops used in class? i got a t61 a few months ago, a little disappointed that it is heavier and clunkier than my old t42.

That's comforting, Rhyme. I purchased the X61 last week after talking with Kry. Shipped Friday so I cannot wait to play with it later this week.

Guys, who have/ordered X61, do you use/intend to use an external display at home?

I Intend to use it w/ an external display at home(my big, beautiful 19" screen), but I realize that I will probably never get around to actually doing so.

At the GSB, it largely depends on the class..... some professors outright ban their use.

Its kind of up to you beyond that - some people pull them out and browse the web for the whole 3 hours. I typically don't pull it out unless I'm just bored stiff or sometimes I'll try to do the homework as professors walk through the lecture notes so I can see if I get it (and if I don't, I can ask the right question right then and there... of course without making it clear I'm doing the homework).

I know one person who doesn't bring his laptop to school unless he has to (team meeting or whatever), but he has some kind of behemoth 4 year old brick that actually has visible speaker grills... its huge and weighs more than an accounting textbook. Everyone else brings them, every day.

For what its worth, I had a t41p as well --- and it was a manageable weight, the t6x series however are just too damn big in my view, and although i thought the x series might be too small to get used to, its great. I even got the tablet version which isn't half as light as the non-tablet (which I should have got, since I never ever use the tablet function). The keyboard is basically full size, and the 1024x768 screen is crisp and big enough to do just about anything on. I debated picking up a 19" flatscreen for home, but I find the laptop is so light and comfortable I can work from anywhere easily (eg the couch or the bed) -- and the screen size is just fine.

You'll live with the t6* series of course, but if you happen on a buyer for it, I highly recommend the x series -- great machine.

I think the X series is too small for a touchpad. The T series has both......
