Calling all Michigan (Ross) Fall 2009 Applicants!

Hey Refurb,

Thanks. But, since my wife works for a bank, I thought the nearest location for her would be Detroit downtown. I may be wrong. How good is the public transport in and around Ann Arbor? From what I recollect, Ann Arbor to Detroit downtown is good enough distance.

AWESOME! So nice to see the Ross-09 thread I just got into AA last week and all I can say is U-Mich is fantastic! The people, the facilities, the town - I knew it would be good, but not this good - heh heh! All the best to all the 09-ers. We'll see you here in AA next year!

Oh I'm sorry. I assumed that you thought the school was close to downtown Detroit.

Ann Arbor is a hippy town, so the public transit (at least in the core of the city) is pretty good. Public transit between towns isn't that great from what I know (which isn't much).

Yeah, Detroit is a good haul from Ann Arbor. However, downtown Detroit isn't that big of an area. Most of the "Detroit" is in the suburbs, Royal Oak (very nice), Canton, Westland, Dearborn, Livonia. Very typical American suburbs. The nasty part of Detroit is near the downtown area and it is VERY nasty.

I can't say where your wife might end up working (I'm sure there are plenty of banking jobs outside the downtown), but if she does take a job downtown you might end up living in Canton or Westland, so both your commutes are in the 30 min range. Both places are typical middle-class suburbs.

I've lived in a few US cities and towns and I think Ann Arbor really is something special. It combines the small town feel, but has a lot more stuff to do than a town it's size typically would. It's hip, cool and safe. If you're up for a big city trip, Detroit is close.

Just to build on the earlier comments regarding Detroit, et al.

Most of your financial, banking, big corporations are going to be located in the burbs. Troy, Birmingham, West Bloomfield, Bloomfield Hills, and Royal Oak are the richest areas, great neighborhoods, and lots of large businesses (BCG for instance, is located in Troy. McKinsey is in Detroit however.)

Downtown Detroit does have a couple nice areas, like Gross Pointe, and Gross Isle. And the area around Tiger Stadium and the Fox Theatre is very nice.

Ann Arbor as a whole is beautiful. It is a great city, with a huge proportion of the population having college degrees, and more. Like refurb said, it has a liberal feel. Troy, and the cities I mentioned above are about 30-45 minutes from Ann Arbor. But there is NO public transportation that will take you between the two. There is a bus system in Ann Arbor that you can get around on, but other than that, there is zero city-to-city transportation that I know of. A car is a must if you plan to commute.

Since I'm coming from the east coast, I'm going to try and hit Cornell, then Michigan in one trip (by car).

I'm hoping to get my app in by R1, so I want to get there mid-Sept.

Flying to Detroit is only about $200 per person, with everything included.

Dang, that's some road trip. Are you driving through Canada or going south through Pennsylvania and Ohio? Either way that's a helluva drive! Also, mid-September is no fun. Away at ND on the 13th and then a bye on the 20th

Hey don't worry the campus won't be empty!! We have some accounting waiver class starting on the 11th (which is not required but many people are taking it), and the required part of the orientation starts on 21st, so I am sure many people will be in town. You probably won't be able to attend a class

Well, I'm rolling the Cornell visit into my trip. Six hours to Cornell, then another six to Ann Arbor. If I wasn't visiting Cornell, I'd be flying!

I drove it once when I left Ann Arbor, about a 12 hour drive on a good day, through OH and PA. I'm visiting Cornell on the way there, so i won't have to drive it all at once (at least on the way there).

I'll be there on September 25th!!

Unfortunately I can't register for the Cornell visit yet. Not surprising since they don't have their essay questions out yet either!!
