Good Afternoon Linda,
I just had a quick question for you: can earning a Master's degree before applying to B-School actually be more detrimental than helpful to my chances of gaining admission at the top B-Schools? I'm in the process of applying for some Master's programs in order to gain more in-depth knowledge in a field that I like and also to get the chance to get great grades in graduate level classes, thereby creating that alternative transcript we discussed in an earlier post. I really want to focus on Finance and MIS when I actually get into an MBA program, and am aiming to receive a Master's in Business Information Systems or a related field. I'm just not sure if admissions teams will look favorably upon my graduate work, or if they'll think there's no need for me to apply. If you could provide some of your great insight, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks a bunch,
Vivek
Earning a masters degree can be detrimental if :
1) The masters degree is an MBA equivalent. Then you need to explain why you need the MBA on top of whatever degree you have just obtained.
2) You don't have competitive work experience and really should be spending this time beefing up your work experience.
3) You earn poor grades in the masters program.
4) YOu already have grad degrees and this degree plus an MBA makes you start looking like someone who just keeps on going to school.
However if your other degree supports your long-term goals and complements an MBA, you have competitive worke experience, and you earn good grades in the grad program, then it will be a positive.
Good luck!
